Greetings from Maine!

Castine, Maine
Castine, Maine

Good Sunday morning to you!! I don’t even know where to begin sharing about our trip. Our time in Maine so far has been full but relaxing.

For starters, we’ve taken the boat out on the lake, made s’mores, hiked Blue Hill Mountain, toured the picturesque town of Castine, and biked Schoodic Point.

Our Blue Hill Mountain hike was more exciting than we had anticipated when we “lost” two of our kids on the way up. They’d gone on ahead of us, and when they got to a fork, they took a different route — the long one. So when we got to the summit, they weren’t there. Naturally, I freaked.

They weren’t gone all that long, but as we were tromping around the mountain searching for them, all I could think of was the story of Blueberries for Sal, when Little Bear was following along behind Little Sal’s mother, and Little Sal was following along behind Little Bear’s mother, and they were all mixed up on Blueberry Hill. All’s well that ends well, but we had a pretty serious conversation about not going too far ahead of the pack.

I probably make it sound like we’re going all the time, but we’re really not. I’ve had a lot of time to laze around by the lake. We’ve played more games of Spades than I can count. We have quite a rivalry going — Paul and me against our son and my dad. For the record, we’re ahead; they’ve only beat us once. (I’m not at all competitive.)

I’ve also read an entire novel, met two friends for coffee, taken several walk/runs by the lake, written a couple of blog posts, and naps are becoming a part of my daily routine. It’s just that those activities don’t make for very good pictures. Ha.

Last night we picked up lobsters at a local lobster pound and cooked them here at the house. The kids had a blast with that.

Today we have plans to visit the Jordan Pond House. This means lobster stew, popovers for the non-gluten-free among us, and more beautiful vistas. It’s one of our favorite spots in all of Maine, but most tourists share this opinion, so we are prepared for a bit of a wait.

The weather has been pretty mixed this week. It’s grey and damp here right now, but I’m not complaining. As my mom likes to say, a rainy day at the lake beats a sunny day at the office! All in all, it’s been a great vacation so far. I can’t believe it’s only half over.

Next week we’ll be trading my extended family for my husband’s, and we can’t wait to introduce them to some of our favorite sites. It will be the first time we’ve hosted them here, so we’re pretty psyched about that. Plus, the weather’s looking up so we’re hoping to end our vacation on a high note.

Enjoy your Sunday!

  1. Wow, that’s what I call a great vacation! 🙂
Being a teacher and a single mom my summer vacation was spent at home (have the luxury of time, money however is another thing, lol). It was great though…went to movies, lunch, dinners, and worked out alot with my daughter.
My son just got his first “real” job and my daughter graduates college in a year an a half so hopefully vacations are around the corner 🙂

  2. I would have love the bike riding with my son. He liked the photo of you guys enjoying the LOBSTER photo.????

  3. What a lovely vacation! I’m glad you guys are having a good time, and thank you for sharing the pictures! Who knows? Maybe Maine will be a destination for us one of these days.

  4. I totally would have been in panic mode. Glad it ended the way it did! Gorgeous place to holiday. I love exploring on bikes. Would have been super excited about that! Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

    1. I was definitely in panic mode! My mom’s mind started going all sorts of dark places. But they weren’t far from us, really. All’s well that ends well, I guess! 🙂

  5. hi Jo lynne, thanks for the great information. We are from Detroit suburbs and i am planning a roadtrip to new england states. I have family of 5, kids are 17,15,13. OUr plan is to go to Burlington area (2 days) then over to adadia national park (2 days) and then down the coast to quaint ne towns (2 days), then finish in boston (2 days) and head home. i have noted all your places and suggestions. for the areas i listed above do you have any must see’s or what towns to stay in to hit those areas, or places to stay. sorry a lot of questions but just have this one trip for the year and want to make it as memorable as possible for our kids!! any input will be so appreciated. thanks so much for your posts.

    1. Hey Stacey! It’s hard to say… there is so much. We love Castine, Maine. Smaller and not as commercial as some other towns. Camden is really cute but very crowded anymore. The Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth is excellent for lobster and local seafood, and it has a pretty view of the river while you wait to be seated. Blue Hill Mountain is a nice little hike. Of course there is tons in Acadia, but parking is a nightmare anymore. Consider parking and taking the public transit. If you go to the Jordan Pond House, make a reservation, or call for advance seating, or whatever it is they call it. 🙂 I hope you have fun!
