Master Bedroom Progress

Good morning, friends! Today I’m taking a break from fashion to share an update on my master bedroom. I still have a ways to go, but I’ve come so far in such a short time, I thought I’d share a mid-way progress report/update with you.

I could actually do this type of post for just about every room in my house; I feel like I’m about halfway there with most of them at this point! I had planned to focus on one room at a time, but I can’t operate that way. I keep bouncing around, depending on whatever is annoying me at any given moment. Ha!

But the bedroom is at a good mid-way point right now. I’ve done the major stuff, and now it’s time to pull it all together with curtains, wall hangings, and accessories.

This is where I usually fall part when putting a room together. I can get to a certain point, but then I get overwhelmed by the choices when it comes to curtains and decorative touches.

I like EV-ER-Y-THING, that’s my problem. But I want to keep the look cohesive — both with what I’ve already done in the room and with the rest of the house.

My designer is coming today to help with a few things downstairs, so I’m going to have her take a look at the bedroom and give me some direction on finishing it up.

Meanwhile, let me remind you where we started.

Master Bedroom: Before

Here’s what it looked like on settlement day, before we did anything. This is the view from the doorway.

And here’s the sitting area. As you can see, the carpet was old and the paint was a warm yellow-beige.

Also, my walk-in closet had only a single wire shelf.

Master Bedroom: With Furniture

Before we moved in, we had the entire 2nd floor re-carpeted. In my perfect world, we would have put in hardwood floors, but that was waaaaay out of our budget so we opted for a plush wall to wall carpet. The new carpet is thick and soft, and I think it’s the perfect neutral color to provide a foundation for whatever we want to do in each room.

Our master bedroom has great space, but I struggled with what to do with it all.

When we first moved in, we had the movers put both of our dressers on the end of the room with the bed. Paul’s fits well on the wall to the left of the bed, but mine was covering part of the windows where we placed it on the wall to the right of the bed.

The previous owners used the other end of the room as a sitting area with a TV, but I had other plans. I could see that “sitting area” being a fashion blogger’s paradise with my clothing rack, steamer, and mirror for try-on sessions. I also envisioned a small chair where I could sit for Facebook Lives and things.

But for the first few weeks, that area just housed all our unpacked boxes. In my defense, we were waiting to have our closet systems installed before completely unpacking.

I only hung the bare minimum in my closet to use for those first few weeks. You can see how that closet set-up was not going to work for me longterm.

Master Bedroom: Now

When my family was visiting a few weeks ago, my brother-in-law painted our master bedroom to match the rest of the house — Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Grey with White Dove on the trim.

We decided having my big dresser on that wall between the windows was too crowded, so we moved it to the other side of the room, where I also have my clothing rack and steamer, as planned. I placed my jewelry armoire in that spot instead. It definitely needs something decorative to set on top.

(And the boards on the floor need to be put back up on the blinds.)

I’ve propped my selfie mirror in the corner for now, but I want to get a free-standing one eventually. I’m also planning to get a chair and a small table to place right there by that big window, where the room kind of juts out. Hopefully it will help define that space a little more and provide some separation.

I know there are more creative things I could do with that area, I’m just not sure what they are! I’m open to ideas.

I’m planning to move my dresser to the left a bit to allow for more “breathing room” in this crowded corner.

For those wondering, I keep clothes for the blog on this rack so they’re separated from my personal wardrobe in my closet. These are things I’m planning to try on and/or style for the blog.

Here’s a view of the other side of the bed — that’s Paul’s dresser, and the door to the left leads to our closets and bathroom.

I’ve changed out all the doorknobs and hinges to matte black, and I chose a bench for the end of the bed with black legs to tie in with that. I also plan to use matte black curtain rods when I get around to hanging curtains.

Here’s a better view of the knobs — this is the door that leads to the hallway. Pardon the crap on the floor. That all needs to go downstairs. That window on the landing overlooks our backyard.

The other thing we did is replace the white and gold ceiling fan with a fan in matte black. This one is a little smaller than ideal for this size room, but it actually gives us quite a lot of air.

I also shared some pictures of my closet on Sunday, but if you missed it, here’s how it looks now! Quite an improvement… yes???

These are the hangers I’m using — they look like wood, but they’re plastic, so they’re thinner and also less expensive than the wood ones I was using before. I also like how the white hangers and white shelves keep everything light and bright. I relocated the wood-tone ones I was using before into the various coat closets and guestroom closets throughout the house, so they aren’t going to waste.

Also, you may want to see how Paul’s closet turned out…

As you can see, he has plenty of clothes, but he still can’t quite fill his closet! He will have more sweaters on those center shelves this fall, but I have “borrowed” the shelves over his shirts for my OTK boots. He said he didn’t mind.

Also, the big “drawer” on the bottom is a hamper. We each have one — SO handy!

Our Plans

This room clearly needs curtains, but with 5 windows, I’m trying to find something budget-friendly. I love the ones I got for the guest room at Macy’s, but I don’t really want to do the same in here, so I’m still looking. I was looking at these, but I’m not sure I want to commit to blue.

The pillows on my bed are from the old house, but they actually work really well with this room; they have the taupe that’s in the walls, carpet, and bench. So I guess I’ll keep them for now, although I was itching for something new. Maybe I’ll find something fall-themed for the next few months. I also want to get something for the wall over the bed.

I’m actually noticing in these pictures that the bench looks warmer than it seems in person. I wanted it to work in with the pinkish beige in the carpet and walls, but it seems to have more of a yellow undertone? I kept the packaging in case I decide the color doesn’t go — it’s hard to match neutrals!

We haven’t done a thing to the master bathroom yet, but it needs some paint, and eventually new lights and vanities, but that’s a project for another time. Right now it is spacious and has everything we need.

So that’s where things stand with the master bedroom! I can’t wait to find curtains for the windows and something for the wall over the bed, and I’m excited to see my fashion blogger’s nook come to life once I find a mirror and chair and a few other things to fill out the space. I’ll be sure to update with a final reveal once everything comes together!

  1. LOVE your new bedroom – it looks so clean and crisp. I would love to do a closet makeover myself – we just built our house 3 years ago & in an attempt to get in & get settled quickly we ended up just putting in the ventilated shelving with the intent to do something better later. My question is do you happen to know how big your closet is? It looks similar to my size so I was looking at your design & wondering if it would fit my space. I have looked up the company you used & we have one in our area. Thank you so much for posting!

  2. TOTALLY loving what you have done in your master bedroom!! Everything looks so put together and I think it’s beautiful!! Thanks for the link for your knobs – I’m thinking our home could do with some new knobs to keep everything fresh and not so dated. Thanks!!

  3. Love the progress on your master bedroom. Looks terrific and so spacious. I agree with the comment about lighter color neutral curtains. Thanks for the update.

  4. Looking good so far!  Love the cute print for your office.  Suggestion…search for “stupell home decor” at Walmart.  Some cute artwork that would fit your office too.

  5. Your bedroom is beautiful! I am very envious of all that space. The print you got for your office is adorable! It is perfect for you! I love the post about your house. Would love to see what you do with the rest of it.

  6. I have serious room envy!  Your master is so big with lots of windows and double closets. You must walk around and squeal with delight.
I thought those were boot boxes in your husband’s closet. I recognize them, as mine are in boxes on my husband’s shelves. May as well put those shelves to good use. 😉
My thoughts were if you keep the curtains neutral in color,  you can change up your bedding with the seasons.  My base bedding remains the same but I like to change out the decorator cushions and throw, adding a duvet in the winter. It doesn’t cost a lot to do that and a change is always refreshing.

  7. Everything is looking wonderful!  Thank you for letting us tag along through this process.  I love the voice “in your head” as you think through ideas.  Your “voice” helps me slow down my process when it comes to trying on clothes and deciding what does (and does NOT) work for me.

    1. LOL! Well… I almost did, and then when I looked at my office, I didn’t have a great spot to put it, and it’s actually pretty spendy… so I think I’ll wait. Maybe I’ll get a little one to add to my shelves. Or maybe they’ll go on sale… that would be nice!

  8. I like the canvas print but I would definitely make a canvas print of that fabulous photo your photographer took of u at the beach in the straw hat

  9. Hi Jo-Lynne, Love what you are doing in your bedroom! I am exactly like you and get very overwhelmed in making decisions on what to do! Just throwing out an idea to you. I think it would look great to pull the blue-green from your pillows into your room by buying a matching bench and going with the same color scheme for the curtains. If you are over that color then pick a new color to go with in a color that you love. I think a bold or muted pop of color in a neutral color scheme room pulls the whole room together! If you are like me…I always have these ideas but can’t find what I have envisioned in my mind! lol I love the print for your office. It’s perfect and not cheesy at all. You are a fashion blogger after all! XO

    1. Thanks for the ideas, Tracy! I’m afraid to commit to a color on the windows because there are so many and I doubt I’ll ever change them. But I love the idea of using color in the bench and pillows. I almost got a bench to go with the throw pillows on my bed, but I know I want to change those up soon. I think I’m going to add color with a throw and a pillow on the bench and maybe freshen up the pillows on the bed too. All my shams are white – adding some color there or even some texture with neutrals might be a nice change, instead of only having color in the accent pillows.

  10. Yay we are both in our new houses!
Been so fun taking the journey with you…
Of course my retirement condo is a little bigger than
    Your bedroom and kitchen! lol!
Love the paint and neutral colors so bright and clean!
The Sitting area in the bedroom is perfect for you…
Can’t believe how much you hv done in such short time..
Take time to sit in that beautiful yard of yours!

    1. I hope you’re getting settled in and enjoying your new digs! At some seasons of life, smaller is better. 🙂 We hosted old friends of Paul’s last night, they recently retired and downsized, and they were saying how they don’t miss their big house with a pool one bit.

  11. Wow it’s a big room Jo-Lynne… I’m sure it’s nice to have all the space but at the same time a lot to fill in without becoming cluttered… I would definitely put in a seating area. Is there a reason why your not considering your Facebook live set up in your office?Just to keep your bedroom more private … you’ve done such a nice job with your colors and changes. You must be proud. And of course that closet is to dye for. I found some great curtain options at Walmart and maybe even try target too. I needed four panels for our bedroom and think I got them for 12.00 a panel. They were white with a pattern through them. neutrals seem to work well in case you want to change up your comforter. Thanks for sharing
    Karen

    1. Yes love the print for your office… agree with another reader about your photo from your beach vacation with the straw hat:) that too would be nice blown up and on the wall.

    2. Walmart is a good idea — I might look online. $12 a panel is about all I want to spend, lol!

I had thought of doing my FB Lives in my office, and I might sometimes. I also was thinking of putting a selfie mirror in here too, for a different backdrop, but I’m not sure where that would go.

  12. Love your updates as always. I get lots of ideas and really like your decorating style. Also wanted to let you know I loved the print you linked in your newsletter for your office. I think it would like great and be so fun. I’m excited to see your office. Have a great day.

  13. Your room looks great! The glam print is super cute and very fitting
    😉
I would put a tall vase filled with tall branches/buds type filler on the jewelry cabinet between the windows.

  14. Wow! It’s coming along VERY nicely!  I agree with the comment about the neutral curtains.  I’m the same about making updates – I usually don’t finish one because something else catches my eye that I want to change so I’m bouncing back and forth between projects.  Lol.

What a fun art print for your blogging area!  I think it’s perfect!

Looking forward to more home reveals.  😊

  15. Crushing on your closet! I’d love to have a closet like yours. Your house is coming together so nicely. I really like your taste in decorating as well as what you style. Keep those pics coming. We love seeing your progress.

  16. I love following along with the progress on your new house. Everything is so beautiful. I love your master bedroom. How about some pops of color? Maybe on the bench or on some small club chairs? Even coordinating colorful window treatments to match some pillows on your bed would add some interest. Just my thoughts, but I love color, especially blue.

  17. I love seeing all the updates to your house. I love your new ceiling fan and the new door knobs. I agree with others about neutral curtains. I have neutral curtains in my bedroom and I feel it keeps the room light and airy. I then switch out pillows, throws, etc on my bed for extra pops of color.
The print you picked out for your office is adorbs! I also really love the idea from other readers about blowing up the pic of you at the beach and hanging it in your office.
Your house is absolutely beautiful! Can’t wait to see more updates. Oh, and I have serious closet envy!

    1. Thanks, Julie. I’m glad so many of you agree, I definitely want to keep it light and airy. That’s how my old bedroom was, and I loved it there too. Too bad I couldn’t have re-used those curtains. I got them at Home Goods, but when I looked there last week, I couldn’t find enough of one curtain for 5 windows.

  18. Everything looks great!  Love the choices for color & accent pieces.  I love the whimsical picture you are thinking about getting.  Have you ever seen Melsy’s Illustrations?   If not check out her website!  I’m in love with just about everything!  https://www.jamelsaliba.com/
I’m anxious to see how the window treatment for the breakfast area comes out. I had a cornice removed from my dining room a few years back, but sort of miss it now….it does make a statement!   That closet organizer, every gals dream!

  19. You have a beautiful space to work with! I would suggest keeping your window treatments all neutral like your walls so they cohesively create a peaceful backdrop. With so many windows in the room, I think a color or busy pattern will make your room look choppy.  Instead let your bed be the focal point of the room. Then bring color and personality to the space with lots of pillows, throws, wall pictures and accessories.

    1. BTW, would you mind giving me the link of the company where you bought the “home” saying that you hung above the bed in your Guest Room?

  20. Hi Jo-Lynne- I love what you have done with your house so far and your bedroom. All is beautiful! I love the wall color – Benjamin Moore paint is the best! We have Bennington Grey on our kitchen cabinets and love the color! I’m thinking that the Edgefield Grey for your walls is a perfect neutral and I agree to keep the window coverings light and close to your wall color! All in all – you are doing a great job and so fun to see the progress! Also, ready for fall clothes! Thanks for all you do! Have a blessed day!

  21. It is so hard to be patient when it comes to decorating when we’re in a new place or have had the rooms painted, isn’t it!  I want it done now!  I really like the print you found at Wayfair for your office.  I sure hope the new ceiling fan in your bedroom has a remote to operate it.  Ha!  I’ve always had a difficult time finding curtains/drapes that don’t break the bank and are what I want.  I hope your designer was able to give you some good ideas today.  Have a great night!

    1. Ugh, no remote. Our old ceiling fan had a remote and a great wall control, but that was a much nicer fan. We went cheap on this one, but we rarely change the settings and Paul is tall enough to reach those ugly pulls. 🙃

Drapes are $$$ and with so many windows, we are just going to have to take our time and do them as we can.

  22. Hi Jo-Lynne
You have a lovely base to work with. What about a built in window seat in your alcove. They are not expensive to do and can provide a great reading nook and a place to store bedding in. We had a carpenter put one in our bedroom in front of bay windows and it saved me buying more club chairs etc. Also maybe add a pretty skirted table and chair instead? You are at the point you need to soften it all with fabrics and color. I guess the bottom line is how do you want to use it? Sometimes it takes a little bit to get the feel for your space and “see” how you want it to evolve. I usually start spending hours on Pinterest or IG and Houzz and the interior designers sites I like. Hopefully your designer had some unique ideas. My only other suggestion is check out places you like to buy ready made curtains and consider buying extra panels to sew together ( simple for a seamstress to do) to get the additional fullness that makes your window treatments appear custom if you do not want to spend the money on custom now. Thanks for sharing. I love this topic!

  23. I’ve been working on a re-do/update of our spare bedroom and was going to ask you about the accent pillows on your bed…..I’m using white, tan/gold for the primary colors and blue accents for color. Since they aren’t new, not sure I could find them but maybe?  I have bought bedding and curtains at Target for and was quite satisfied with the quality of both.  The curtains I purchased were grommet topped and were about $25/panel…… but I only have two windows. 😜 Your progress looks great so far and I look forward to seeing it once it’s complete.

  24. Love it all and your ceiling fan!  Going through the same thing ourselves.  Do you remember where you got your ceiling fan?

  25. I really enjoy seeing what you’ve accomplished already! So much fun decorating a new place, enjoy it and don’t stress about what’s not done yet, rather look around and feel good about your progress.
The black hardware adds a high end look to the paneled doors, very nice touch.
Thank you for sharing the journey with us!

  26. Enjoyed seeing all the updates! The dresser looks so much better on the other wall! Sooo many windows, it’s hard to set up furniture sometimes, but love all the natural light!

  27. Hi Jo-Lynne! I like what you have done already with your master bedroom. If I were you, I would put up neutral curtains to match the walls. Then you can bring in pops of colour through pillows, throws, a vase on your jewelry armoire, pillows on future chairs or even a chaise lounge by those lovely windows. Also, you can decorate according to the seasons. Put away your current pillows and decorate for fall now and later for Christmas. When you bring your current pillows back, they will seem like new again. I love to decorate according to the seasons and then when I bring out my “ordinary” décor, it feels new and fresh. Can’t wait to see what you do with the room!

  28. My favorite part is the closet lol! I do love how everything is coming together. Taking your time with each step is paying off, it will be exactly as you want it and you won’t want to re-do it in a year or two.

  29. We seem to have VERY similar bedroom furniture, so I’m looking forward to seeing how your room turns out!

  30. I love the grey, black and white palette. You can go white also on drapes which is fresh and 95″ hung above the window top. I did Silver strand with white woodwork and white curtains. Bed Bath and Beyond Quinn blackout panels. I love the clean look. Then black or silver grey rods.

It does get tricky matching neutrals in the beige/grey family. White is simple.

You can add a darker grey/teal throw at end of bed to pull together the room. Your hardware looks fabulous.
