Mom Fashion | What I Wore This Week 10.26.11

What I Wore Wednesday blog carnival at The Pleated Poppy

I’m linking up to several fashiony carnivals again and sharing some of the outfits I put together this week. If you played along, let me know so I can stop by and visit! I know it probably seems kind of crazy that I’m posting all these pictures of myself, and I’ll admit sometimes I feel a little bit self-centered doing this week after week. But it’s amazing how this little discipline inspires me not only to get dressed each day (which, trust me, when you work from home, it hard to do sometimes!) but also challenges me to try different looks and put new outfits together when I typically would wear the same two or three outfits over and over. Not that the world will stop spinning on its axis if I work in yoga pants every day, but it really helps me feel better and be more productive, and I expect my husband and kids appreciate the extra effort too.

So here are this week’s outfits. I think I only missed one day!

What I Wore This Week

WEDNESDAY: I picked up an infinity scarf at the LOFT Outlet, and I’ve been dying to try it out. I decided to give it a whirl one crisp fall day last week. I’ll admit, I struggle with the scarf trend. I love them on everyone else, but I always feel like I look like I’m choking when I wear scarves. And yet, I really want to make them work because I love them so much, and it’s a great way to add color to an otherwise boring outfit. For example. Here’s something I’d typically wear.

That’s all fine and good, but check it out with the teal scarf.

I also tried looping the scarf around twice — but see how I look like I’m wearing a neck brace?? I always have this problem with scarves. Maybe my neck is shorter than average or something! At any rate, check out how I added the orange shoes. Doesn’t the orange and teal work well together? The black are fine, but the orange really make a statement.

THURSDAY: Thursday I decided to try another one of my impulse purchases from the outlets — same store, even. Funny, I don’t usually go to the LOFT anymore when I’m at the mall, but when I’m at the outlets, I often do a walk-through, and I’ve found some great little treasures.

I’ve been wanting a cape/poncho, and while this one isn’t exactly what I had in mind, I snatched it up. It was the last one, and the girl at the register said that they were flying out of the store. I’m never sure what to say to that. On the one hand, I don’t care to have the same article of clothing as half the women in Pennsylvania, but on the other hand, it’s obviously a great piece if so many of us are drawn to it.

Now see, this seems much more flattering than the scarf. I really think I look better without a bunch of extra fluff around the neck. I wore silver ballet flats all day and then put on black wedge pumps for an event that evening.

For jewelry, I decided to keep it simple and classic with these chunky silver hoops and my stand-by silver bead bracelet.

FRIDAY: Friday was a sucky day, and that’s all there is to it. I wore sweats all day because I was supposed to work out in the afternoon, which never happened, even though I drove all the way to the gym. And then after all that, I was too irritated to change and look presentable, so I just bummed around the rest of the day.

SATURDAY: A much better day! I got up early and ran before spending the day running errands and doing odd jobs around the house. I picked up this sage green top at (you guessed it! the outlets!)

I was anxious to see how this outfit looked with the green. Remember last week, I wore it with a black top and said it needed color?

This isn’t exactly what I had in mind for color; it’s still kind of pale, but I like it better than the black.

I think I definitely look better in bolder colors, though. I’m hoping to pick up a top in burgundy or plum.

SATURDAY NIGHT: I got it in my head that I’d like to go out for a cozy dinner for two, so I scrounged up a last minute babysitter and a last minute dinner reservation, and we headed out for a night on the town.

Actually, that sounds more exciting than it really was. We headed out to our favorite quiet inn. Unfortunately the food wasn’t as good as usual, but that wasn’t the important part, anyway. It was just nice to go out together and to get a chance to really talk and reconnect. We’ve been together a lot lately, but usually with the kids or with friends, and sometimes you just need time to yourselves, ya know?

Ladies, it’s so important to make time to reconnect with your husbands. As I watch my kids growing up before my eyes, I’m becoming very much aware of the fact that one of these days, and a lot sooner than it seems when we’re in the trenches, we will be on our own again, just the two of us. The kids will each go their own way and make new new lives for themselves, and I don’t want to find myself one day staring at my husband across the dinner table with nothing to say. We don’t have a regularly scheduled date night like some couples do, but we definitely make it a habit to go out together, just the two of us, to a quiet place where we can talk.

But on to the important things . . . like what I wore! I could have thrown on any old thing, and I almost did, and then I thought, whattheheck!? And I put on a new dress that I picked up to have on hand for blogging events and stuff. So many evenings I dress up to go out with the girls, and I decided I owe my husband at least the same amount of effort, right?

This dress is a bit out of my comfort zone, what with PATTERN and COLOR and all that. But I felt great in it and had fun wearing it. I’m so glad my friends urged me to get it when we were out shopping last week!

SUNDAY: This sweater is my other splurge purchase last week. I have been lamenting the fact that I need more color in my fall/winter wardrobe, and I fell in love with this the minute I saw it. I have a feeling you will be seeing a LOT of this sweater in upcoming WIWW posts.

Love the boots with this too — another Nine West Outlet purchase. And the moss green bag is the perfect compliment to the rust and brown, don’t you think?? I love using nature’s color palette to inspire my outfits.

MONDAY: Just hanging out at home. Sweatshirt, tank, skinnies and cozy Uggs for running to the grocery store and Kindertargen Drop Off. And my Blissdom necklaces from Lisa Leonard and The Vintage Pearl — wearing these necklaces always brings back warm fuzzy Blissdom memories.

TUESDAY: I was a social media consultant at the PA Women’s Conference and I was going for a casual/professional look. I also wanted to wear flats because I knew I’d be doing a lot of walking and standing. I put this oatmeal color sweater and moss green tank that I’ve shown before with skinny jeans tucked into brown suede boots instead of the orange flats I often wear with this outfit. I felt like it looked more like October with the boots. I need to find a long-sleeve tee to go under this sweater so I can keep wearing it.

I wore my Silpada necklace and earrings and carried my moss green suede handbag.

And that’s a wrap! For more outfit inspiration, check out Monday MingleThe Pleated Poppy and Momma Go Round.

    1. Thanks! I did get it cut again. I didn’t make a big deal out of it b/c it was only 6 weeks since my last cut, but I tried someone new, and he really did a great job. It’s short, but it doesn’t look as thin this way. 🙂

  1. You always look great and that dress is amazing! You are so right about dressing up for the girls – I do that all the time – we should put in that same effort for our husbands!

  2. Love your style of clothes! I wish there were high-end outlets around my area. Would the long-sleeved sage shirt go with the oatmeal-colored sweater? I’m also trying to put more color into my wardrobe, but all I ever find in the stores are neutral or dark colors. I’d like to find a pair of burgundy cords, but there are none to be found. And, the green purse is really cute!!

    1. You know, I originally thought I could wear the new shirt with the oatmeal sweater, but I think the neckline might conflict, and it is a lighter green than I’d like. I should try it though. You never know. I was really looking for a darker green, like the tank, and the handbag.

  3. First of all, like the hair ! Secondly, I have the same pair of Uggs but in the dark chocolate brown. Trouble is, I’m afraid to wear them if it is rainy or snowing. We are going to Fargo, ND for Thanksgiving and I really want to take and wear them, but am worried about the suede?? I proofed them with an Ugg kit spray, but still want to protect them. Last year I just about got sick after I splashed a tiny bit of spaghetti sauce on my boots. The stain is still there!! UGH on the UGGS!~

  4. Love the scarf in the first photo with it, but you’re right it looks kind of scary wrapped twice around your neck. Neck brace chic?

The date night dress is great. Totally out of my comfort zone, too, but you wore it well and looked great!

  5. The infinity scarf looks really good when you don’t wrap it twice, so definitely keep wearing it! I like the black shirt better than the green one under the sweater. And the last sweater is beautiful, although I could never wear that color. I love these posts. It is fun to see what people are wearing and it does inspire me to try new things.

  6. All of your outfits look great! Very flattering and fun. I’ve got my eye on an infinity scarf but haven’t taken the plunge yet–I’m holding off until I can actually wear it without heat exhaustion. The teal color looks really nice on you and I’m sure you’ll get a lot of wear out of it–maybe it feels awkward, but it doesn’t look that way. 🙂

I really like the muted brown long cardi (with the green and with the black–yay for options), your new orange sweater is FAB and I’m drooling over all your boots.

Your date night dress is darling too–love the colors and bold pattern. You go on with yourself, girl! 🙂

  7. MUST know where you got the orange sweater. LOVE it. Can I find it online or was it an outlet purchase? It looks fab on you, and that is one of my favorite colors to wear in the fall. 🙂

  8. That dress is a stunner! You should go out of your comfort zone more often. The diagonal pattern is very flattering on you. As for the scarf, I agree with you that it doesn’t do much for you. You look better with an open neckline — the scarf, especially doubled up, makes you look like you have no neck. I also really love the long gray open sweater on you — very slimming and flattering!

  9. WOW! I read these posts of your every week for inspiration. This week was AWESOME! Here’s why.
#1 I feel the exact same way about scarves!! Love to look at them on others, can’t seem to make it happen for me!
#2 I love the looks you put together! I try hard these days to work with what I see you all doing….but it never seems to come together….
#3 and most important – LOVE the new hair cut! Looks awesome!

  10. I love the new pictures you put at the top by the blog title (no idea what that is called; I’m not a computer person). Your children always take nice pictures. And, is that your new orange sweater in the photo of you with the mug?

    1. Why thank you! That photo of the kids was a desperate choice. I wanted a close up and it would be nice if their outfits matched, lol. Eh, whaev! This is real life, right? 🙂

      Yes, same sweater!

  11. I love the orange sweater! I’m with you on the scarf thing too. Cute on others but feels odd on me.
I also like the new fall blog look. I’d like to sip my coffee and just gaze at the farmland picture.

    1. No, not at all! I think any time after Labor Day, you’re good for suede. Definitely once you’re into October.

Did you get Snowtober down there in VA? It’s crazy nuts here!

  12. JL – you might have already answered this – but where did you get the long brown 3/4 length knit cardigan that you wore on saturday (over the sage green shirt)? is it a recent purchase? I LOVE IT and want something just like this.

  13. I actually have a very short neck, so while I love scarves and long earrings, sometimes it doesn’t look right. I love that color. And really Jo-Lynne, you pull it together every single day, which is VERY inspiring. Glad you got out with the huz. I agree, it’s so important to make time for one another. I only have 1 kid and it’s super tough.
