Mom Style | What I Wore This Week 06.27.12

Summer’s back! It has been quite hot around here this past week, AND I LOVE IT!! You will not hear me complaining about the heat. I relish it! Here’s what I’ve been wearing.

This orange ribbed tank is an old favorite from Banana Republic. I layered a white one under it to add some interest, and because it is getting short on me after so many washings. I wore it with my favorite Joe’s cuffed jeans shorts for a comfy, casual look. The green and orange charm bracelet are from JanMary Designs, and the ring was a Christmas present from my husband a few years back. I also wore my encircled earrings and necklace from Studio Jewel and my embellished Frye sandals. And I love how my green nail polish that coordinates with my accessories. It’s the little things! LOL

This was another scorcher of a day. I think it reached 100, and the humidity was at about 80%. It was insane, but I am not complaining. I’ll take it! This black ribbed tank was a gift from Lands’ End Canvas when they sponsored me to BlogHer last summer. I love the fit and shape of it. The gray cuffed shorts are from Banana Republic (last year), and in keeping with the BlogHer theme, those flips were swag from the Cheap Sally party. They are really cute and comfy. I wore a mixed-stone necklace and earrings from Silpada, and I grabbed my black and white Orla Kiely handbag.

Okay, movingrightalong. This was another casual day, working from home and running my kids to and from camp. I love this bright pink slub knit Henley tank from Old Navy. It makes me happy. So do the pink sandals. And the neon green leather handbag is such a fun compliment to the pink. Doesn’t it look like a bowl of sherbet!? (Someone forgot her lipstick. Ooops!) I went simple on the jewelry since this is such a casual outfit — diamond earrings and a hand-stamped necklace has my kids’ names on it.

I did some running around on Saturday — the Farmer’s Market, the grocery store, the pet store (YES, I said pet store — we are now the proud owners of four hermit crabs. Hold me…) and later on that evening, hanging out with friends. I wore this denim skirt from the LOFT Factory Outlet a few years ago and this orange sleeveless top that I got at an outdoorsy store one year in Maine. It’s by Patagonia, and I love how well it’s made. The higher neckline keeps it modest, and the shorter length creates the perfect proportion for wearing it with this shorter skirt. Same Frye sandals and another Studio Jewel necklace.

On Sunday I threw on my go-to summer dress. This jersey knit shift by Maggie London is so easy to wear. I picked it up on sale at Nordstrom Rack last fall. I went with silver chandelier earrings (Stella & Dot) and a silver beaded necklace for accessories, and I wore a pair of black wedge flip flops to keep it cool and casual. Once again, I love the pop of neon bag against the black and white.

A little someone was trying to get in on the action behind me! I should put HER in this post. That outfit she was wearing is from a boutique in my hometown. It has coordinating leggings that you can’t see in this picture.

I wore this outfit on Monday. It wasn’t quite so warm and I was getting sick of wearing the same jean shorts every other day. The teal gathered V-neck tee from Old Navy with DL 1961 Angel Skinny Ankle jeans in Milk and magenta Lucky Brand Dabney Braided Sandals make for a simple outfit, but I like the fresh contrast of colors. Featuring yet another Studio Jewel necklace — this one a gift from Lisa when we roomed together at Blissdom last winter. The bracelet is Silpada, and my watch is currently sporting a white band — my favorite this summer!

I decided this week that I really miss wearing bootcut jeans, so I pulled my favorite pair of Joe’s out of the back of my closet. I know they’re not as current as skinnies, but I think they’re so flattering — especially when paired with heels. I don’t typically wear heels all day long, but I did yesterday, just for the fun of it. I really love these jeans, and I don’t care if they’re not as stylish as some of my others. They are not going to Goodwill anytime soon!!

I wore this outfit to the 95.7 Ben FM studios for an interview with Marilyn Russell! (I will be featured on an upcoming edition of her Woman of the Week radio show.) The jeans were actually sent to me for review years ago, and this casual coral elastic-waisted top is from Old Navy. I wore my tobacco colored wedge sandals that are the only pair of heels I own comfortable enough to wear all day.

Here’s a close-up of my earrings. The picture’s a bit grainy, but you get the idea. I love these. I bought them YEARS ago from Silpada, and I still wear them regularly.

I’m desperately trying to avoid getting into the summer style rut. If it weren’t for these posts, I’m pretty sure I’d be wearing those denim shorts and one of my numerous black tank tops at least five days a week. I know these outfits aren’t exactly high fashion, but then again, I do spend 80% of my waking hours here at home. My goal is to find that perfect marriage of casual and comfortable, yet modern and stylish.

How about you? If you are spending these hot, lazy summer days at home, do you try to keep your outfits fresh? What’s your best tip?

  1. Ok….not to get too personal but do you wear a regular bra under your tanks or a strapless? I’ve found with my tanks that I don’t need a strapless bra but my bra does peek out a bit at some spots and it really bugs me !

  2. Thanks for the continued shout outs for my jewelry! Looking lovely as always. Love the Orla bag. Came across the Orla shop in Covent Garden in London last weekend- I didn’t dare go in, but I thought of you!!!

    1. I love it. Although the purse charm fell off. 🙁 I have it sitting here on my desk, staring at me sadly. I need to find someone who can help me reattach it.

And I use my reusable Orla Kiely shopping bag that I won from you ALL the time!!

  3. Cute as always. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wearing bootcut jeans. For women our age it is a flattering, modern look without trying too hard.

As for what I’m wearing–if I’m leaving the house I do usually put some effort into my outfits and accessories. But if I’m staying home I usually just put a tank and “yoga” capris on. I know I should make more of an effort, but I’m just not motivated I guess. Also, the hot. I will always take heat over cold, but when it is still in the 90s at 11:00 p.m. there is something wrong! 😉

  4. I love your casual outfits. I think you always take it up a notch by wearing jewelry. This is something I have learned from you–thanks for the inspiration!

  5. You’re more put together than me everyday. I seriously throw on a plain white v neck tee and shorts, and more often than not my swimsuit is on underneath (we have a pool). I also will run to the grocery store like this. Yikes, right? Jewelry usually consists of a simple diamond necklace and wedding rings, if I’m doing well I may have on earrings, lol! You look nice daily, I need to put more effort in to this!!

    1. If it weren’t for these posts, I seriously wouldn’t bother. It has become a habit now! LOL (I guess that means it’s working. Lindsey started this carnival to keep herself and others accountable.)

  6. I love your outfits! I’d like to know how you decide two tanks can be paired together. Mine always have different necklines and strap widths. Do the tanks have to be identical? Do tell!

Growing up in Virginia Beach I am very familiar with hermit crabs. Some tourist shops at the oceanfront even give them away with the purchase of a cage. I’ve heard with proper care and progressively larger shells they can live for years, so good luck!

By the way, I love my yoga capris – very comfortable and still cool enough for summer! Come spring I always put away my denim and pull out my capris and shorts. I may have to rethink that! You did a great job keeping a summer vibe.

Thanks for the posts. I love all the stylish ideas,
    Sheri O.

    1. Hey Sheri. Good questions!!! I should do a post on pairing tanks, although I admit, I’m not an expert. I tend to not think to layer, but I’m trying to do more of it. You do not have to have necklines and straps that match, although I didn’t love how the orange and white worked together because the neckline of the orange one is really pretty, and by putting the plain white under, you kind of lost that effect. I was trying to add interest, though. I’m not sure if it was worth it, lol. It’s always an experiment! 🙂

We often vaca at Ocean City, NJ, and we have had the hermit crab in a cage before. Frankly, I wish we’d gone that route. This aquarium was quite an investment!!
