Mother-Daughter Summer Dinner Out Looks

R is joining me today, and we’re teaming up with Nordstrom to share a few summer dining-out looks.

Most of my outings these days consist of the grocery store, physical therapy, or doctor appointments. The only time we have a reason to get dressed up beyond jean shorts and a t-shirt is when we go to church or out to eat — socially distanced, of course — so I usually take full advantage.

When we go to a restaurant, we always opt for the outdoor dining to be on the safe side, so I often wear shorts because it’s been so hot lately. But if we get a mild day or go out later in the evening, white jeans are my go-to.

These Madewell high waist crop skinnies are my current favorites. They fit great, they’re not see-through at all, and the cropped length is perfect for summer.

For this look, I paired them with a silky black tank and jazzed up the look with some fun accessories.

This raw edge tank is so good, I also have it in the ivory and a deep red. It makes a great layering piece, but it’s also nice on its own.

The hemline dips in the back, giving a nice shape to the hips, and the raw edge chiffon details and double v-neck are flattering and add interest to the look.

This top runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

The key to making a black and white look chic and not boring is all about the accessories.

In this case, I wore a neutral wedge sandal and carried a bold floral clutch for a summery pop of color.

I found this bag at Nordstrom last week, and these pictures don’t do it justice. It’s such a gorgeous print, and the envelope style is classic. I’ll have it for years.

It also comes with a removable crossbody strap for hands-free convenience.

I’ve worn these shoes before, and I love how they add texture to the look, while the neutral color elongates the leg and doesn’t compete with the colors in the clutch.

Slides are on trend right now, and the low wedge keeps them walkable.

Layering delicates is a modern way to accessorize, and I wore this Kendra Scott multi strand necklace along with a longer station necklace.

Then I added these geometric hoop earrings and one of her cuff bracelets that I’ve had for a while. This is also a nice one.

And don’t forget your sunnies! Especially when dining outside, you may find you need them at the table, but they also elevate the look and add another element of interest.

I love these glam Gucci cat eye sunglasses, and this pair is a similar style for under $100.

If I want to take it down a notch, I can wear this same black tank with jean shorts and flat sandals.

In this case, I did a front-tuck to keep my proportions in check.

I love these cagey studded slide sandals to keep the look casual but a little edgy and fun.

These are sooo comfortable. The leather feels super soft against the foot, and the footbed is smooth and lightly cushioned.

I kept my accessories simpler this time, with a pair of silver hoops and a single pendant necklace.

Either look works for casual dinners out, but it’s fun to dress up a bit more when the occasion (and weather) allows.

R is 14, and she likes to wear casual dresses for dining out.

I recently ordered this Madewell jersey tank dress to try, but it was too small for me, so I asked her if she wanted it.

Turns out, it fit her perfectly!

She could maybe size down to her normal XS, but we agreed that it might be too short and the small fits just fine.

This swingy striped tank dress is made of a supersoft jersey with a touch of stretch, and it’s lightweight and comfortable. In fact, she wore it the other night when we were eating outside in 90° heat.

She wore simple stud earrings and added a small necklace, similar to this one.

And she wore her white Converse Shoreline sneakers to keep the look casual and sporty.

I love that both my girls like to wear dresses, and I think this is the perfect summer dinner-out look for a young teen.

  1. How nice for both of you to do a post together!   Can’t go wrong with black and white!  I like that style dress on Becca, I’m thinking I’ll have to show that look to our granddaughter, it would be a nice change up for her. I’ve looked at that KS station necklace a few times but since we’re not going out as much I haven’t bought much of anything!  But seeing it again, I may go ahead & order it now.  As always, thank you for the inspiration!

  2. You both look great. I’d love my daughter to wear more dresses but I can’t seem to get her out of Lululemon and Athleta. I really like those black slide sandals but I don’t need them 😔 but I did manage to order a pair of those Kut from the kloth crop jeans. I got one of the last pairs of size 6 but unfortunately I missed the $35 deal and had to pay a little more. Hope they work out.

  3. I love it when your daughters work with you. They are growing up so fast and we as followers have watched them grow into beautiful young ladies.

  4. Such a great post of the two of you. Its nice to see younger girls wearing dresses for a change up…I like how she styled it with the converse( I am still a fan of mine:) Its another hot day here as well. Enjoy the summer heat…

  5. Hi Jo-Lynne. Love this post. You and Becca look great.  I love black and white, probably my favorite summer look.  Can you tell me what the black tote is you’re carrying with the shorts.  I have a YSL in beige that’s similar, but looking for black now.  Not sure if I should do the same bag in a different color, so curious what yours is.  Thanks as always.  Love your blog!

      1. Yay! Couldn’t decide on getting the same bag in a different color, but if it’s good enough for you, it’s good enough for me😻 My husband will NOT thank you…

        1. Haha! It is the only bag I have that I have bought again… I generally never do that, but I couldn’t find anything I liked as well, and I definitely use and enjoy both.

  6. Love it, so fun when your children join you!
Oh how I miss those days …of children.
Becca love the sporty dress, perfect for hot day.
And of course black and white one of my favorites.
Interesting now how jewelry gone to delicate pieces.
    Have a great day!

  7. Becca looks darling in the swing dress.
    Cute and comfy.
I’m checking out the raw edge tank for myself.  Very feminine . . . and the right length!

  8. So fun to do a post with your daughter. I love black and white….can’t go wrong with that and Becca’s dress is perfect for hot summer when you don’t want to be confined to shorts. She’s really growing up since I started your block I believe in 2015.  Great post.

  9. Your daughter looks great! I love both of your outfits, although not in love with the longer shorts for myself. I’m 5’3″ so I like to show as much leg as possible to feel taller. I did buy the tank last year and XS was simply too tight as I too am blessed in the chest, but I should try again with a S. It is very attractive and love that you don’t need a strapless bra. I have the black sandals and agree they’re very comfortable. I wore them to my dentist appointment this morning, in fact, along with my Paige Hoxton Atterberry jeans! My first time wearing them, since I work at home every day and it’s been too hot to wear them except when I know I’ll be in air conditioning. Have a great day!

  10. Love this post!  Becca looks so cute in that dress.  And I love your black and white.  One of my favorite color combos.

  11. I love your choices and really appreciate the details you include about the decisions you all go with!
I need to redo my wedding ring, now that it’s been 40 years and I’d like to incorporate a nice diamond I’ve been lucky enough to inherit. White gold or yellow?
Any advice on choosing a jeweler?
    Thank you!

    1. Congrats! Funny, we are talking about having mine redone. I love white gold, personally. I have cool undertones, so silver complements my skin, plus I much prefer how diamonds look set in white gold.

I think the best way to find a good jeweler is to ask around. We use a guy down on jeweler’s row in Philly – he was the recommendation of a friend many years ago.

  12. You and Becca look great!  I like the dress on your daughter.  And that clutch is beautiful!  I ordered the Katy boyfriend short, Kut from the Kloth Jean shorts from Nordstrom Rack, and tried them on yesterday.  The legs are not as close fitting as I prefer, so I need to check out the ones you have.  I hope y’all are staying cool!  I had the yard mowed before 10 this morning before it was too unbearable.  Enjoy the rest of your day.

  13. Those tan wedges are very cute!  The vamp seems low, which I think looks great, but does that make them hard to keep on?

  14. Great looks!  I just ordered the dress for my 17 yr old daughter.  She has a dress that style already and loves it so this will be great.  I’m hoping it fits as I know sometimes tank dresses fit more roomy and we can size down but I went with her usual top size medium.

  15. I love the shade of lipstick you’re wearing. It looks a little lighter than usual unless it’s the lighting. Do you mind sharing the brand & color?
Also Becca’s hair color & freckles are beautiful!

    1. Thank you, I think they are as well. Of course, she hates her freckles. LOL.

I think my lipstick was the same as usual, but I can’t recall for sure. For photo shoots, I usually wear a deep mauve by Bobbi Brown that is sold out, and I’m at the bottom so I need to find a new one. I may order the Rose or Sandwash Pink to try: https://shopstyle.it/l/bktfW

  16. You look lovely as always, but a big shout-out to Becca for looking absolutely darling in a very age-appropriate way. (And I have a 14-year-old, so I know that’s not always easy.) Well done, y’all!

  17. Becca that’s a cute dress and looks comfortable, too. Great outfit, and you styled it well! Very pretty
