Mustard Cardigan Outfit #FashionFriday

Happy Friday, friends! This long week has come to an end, and I’m definitely ready for the weekend. How about you? Today I’m styling a casual fall outfit with a mustard yellow cardigan.

One of my most pinned posts of all time was when I styled a mustard yellow cardigan with a leopard scarf and bootcut jeans, so when I spotted this mustard cardigan at Nordstrom this year, I knew I had to feature it. Unfortunately it has sold like hotcakes and there are only a few sizes left. (I’m wearing a small, for reference.)

I have, however, found a few options for you. Loft has a yellow boyfriend cardigan that is 40% off right now with code FALLFEST, and Old Navy has a shorter version that is really cute for just $12.

If you’re not stuck on yellow, my cardigan is a nice piece to have, and it comes in an array of pretty colors. I really like the grey and the olive, and that rust is gorg but also selling out. Oh, the blush is fully stocked!

Anyway, there are a ton of color options, and this sweater is really flattering. I like the slim silhouette, the high side slits, and the ribbed details. It’s very lightweight and easy to throw on over a t-shirt or a dress.

When it came to styling this sweater, I kept it simple. I didn’t want to do a leopard scarf again since I have a post like that already, but I do love leopard with this color yellow.

I debated leopard flats, but I styled leopard flats on the blog just yesterday, so I went with brown loafers. I also debated a striped tee underneath, but I did an orange cardigan with a striped tee not long ago, so I went with plain white. As you can see, there are a lot of factors that go into creating outfits for the blog! I probably overthink it, but at any rate, this is what I came up with.

These are my AG legging ankle jeans from the #NSale. These have quickly become my go-to everyday jeans. They’re so comfortable and look so good on. They aren’t on sale at the moment, but if they go on sale again, I’ll let you know.

For options under $100, check out the legging jeans at Loft (40% off) and Lucky Brand (BOGO 50% off).

This is my “perfect white tee” c/o ThirtySomething Tees. It runs small so I have it in the medium. I do wear shapewear under this tee because it’s on the thinner side and has a more fitted silhouette than most of my other tees, but it is that fitted silhouette that makes it such a perfect layering tee. As always, get 10% off with code Jolynne10.

Also, for a nice long-sleeve layering tee, I just ordered a few of these artist t-shirts at J.Crew Factory. They’re a nice cotton slub material, fitted but not tight, and a great weight for wearing alone or as a layer. I have the stripe version, and I love it.

I thought this bag was a fun accessory with this outfit. I like the combination of the mustard, moss green, and cognac for fall.

And this necklace is one of my favorite layering necklaces to wear with a white t-shirt and a cardigan. It jazzes up this basic combination and makes you look chic and put together. Also this one is similar and on sale. I wear both of these a lot.

I like this outfit so much that I ended up wearing it for the rest of the day after this photo shoot. It’s perfect for this mild fall weather we’re having in Philly!

    1. Thank you! If you don’t like mustard near your face, you can always add a scarf in a more flattering color. Burgundy or magenta would be pretty. Or navy or black, of course.

  1. I really like the mustard cardigan and I’m glad you made that the focus rather than the leopard flats. You chose a beautiful pair of loafers! This looks like an outfit I could pull off!

  2. I’ve actually been looking for a great mustard cardigan. Not sure how it will look with blonde hair but I’m going to give it a try!  Thanks

  3. I was one of those who pinned the mustard sweater and leopard scarf. Love this colour for Fall and you look great wearing it. Actually i think you look great in all colours

  4. Such a gorgeous fall color combo. I really love the cut and color of that cardigan. Actually, I pretty much love all the colors they have. And I just now decided to keep those jeans and finally took the tags off and wore them last week. They were one of my first purchases of the sale so I’ve had them since July, lol. I’m sure I’ll probably wear them nonstop now that I’ve made up my mind!

  5. Very well put together casual outfit. I am ordering the one from Old Navy since it comes in petite, so thanks for the options! Before I starting reading your whole post, I wondered why you didn’t style this outfit with your leopard flats lol. But now I know why and it just goes to show they go with a lot.  Especially if your wearing Fall solid colors. I really must invest in some new ones. Enjoy your three day weekend with your family ????

    1. Yeah, I probably shouldn’t let that stop me… I am always thinking of all these different factors when putting an outfit together. I also think this sweater would be really pretty with burgundy or fuchsia shoes.

  6. I like the color of the sweater on you!  I really want a knee length cardigan, but due to the number already in my closet, one will have to get donated if I buy one.  Enjoy your long weekend!

  7. Unfortunately I can’t wear that color but the Orange one from old navy was so cute I went & purchased in black. The one you showed couple days ago.. they ordered for me with No shipping charges.

  8. Love this! I have to say that I’ve read your blog for years and you look better than ever. Is it your new exercise regime?

    1. Oh, wow. Well, thank you. And thank you for sticking around! I don’t know… I have been working out consistently for 4-5 years now, so that is probably part of it. My weight range hasn’t changed much — if anything, it’s higher, but I really think any changes you may notice are due to learning how to dress my body type. Taking pictures of yourself in various outfits for 5 years will teach you a lot. HAHA! And that Adore Your Wardrobe course was really a game changer.

  9. I pinned the older mustard outfit, but it was for the bootleg jeans, not the sweater! 🙂
You never know who is going to pin what and for what reason.
    Have a great weekend!

  10. Thanks for styling another cardigan.  I just love this long style.  So easy and so flattering.  I bought 5 this year in different colors! Never use to like the shorter style, the twin set type, because it just didn’t work with my body.

  11. Mustard………one of my fall faves. You look fabulous in that color. I remember your popular post with the mustard cardigan and leopard scarf. Because of that post, I used it to create my own look. Enjoy your weekend. *Lisa*

  12. This is a lovely look and I totally get the challenge of putting together outfits for posts that vary from day to day. The color of the cardigan is a bold choice without being garish although some will shy away from yellows.  Thank you for sharing your styling inspirations and for hosting. I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

  13. Great look Jo-Lynne ! I’ve been on the hunt for shapewear for the mid-section that’s comfortable enough to wear all day. Can you make any suggestions ?

    1. Hey Sally. So yeah, the one I love is no longer available, and I hate that b/c it is PERFECT for shaping the midsection.

The next best thing is something like this: https://rstyle.me/n/csyu7ngthw

If you wear the ones that go over the chest, they can reshape you and tend to give you a uni-boob. If you don’t mind that, this one is a light control and it is comfortable, but it really doesn’t control much in the belly. It does smooth things about some, though: https://rstyle.me/n/csyu99gthw

  14. This cardigan is gorgeous! Such a great color! I have a cardigan that I bought last year that has a tie at the waist. I’m never sure what to do with it, as I don’t actually use the tie to secure the cardigan around me. Should I let the ties hang to the side, tie them together in the back, completely leave the ties off which would show empty loops on the side, or…? Obviously I need help! 😉 TIA

  15. I love everything about this outfit! You look beautiful! I’ve been a little unsure about the gold color for myself, but I’m inspired to try it with a white t-shirt like you are showing.

    1. The one I wear and love has been discontinued. It has removable straps so you can tuck the top under your bra and not have a second set of straps. The next best thing is something like this: https://rstyle.me/n/csyu7ngthw

  16. Love the mustard color on you! Quick question – I purchased several cardigans last year that are quite a bit longer in the front than the back. Is it still okay to wear these, or are they considered out-of-date? Thanks.

    1. Hey Patty. I don’t think they’re out of date. I have a couple, and I still love to wear them. Maybe they’re not as “trendy” as the long, straight ones, but I think they’re still good. I will keep wearing mine. 🙂

  17. Hey Jo-Lynne! Beautiful outfit and the color looks great on you! Quick question- you mentioned wearing shape wear under your tee? Can you tell me what your wearing? I am short waisted and struggle with wearing fitted tees at times. Thanks and have a nice weekend!

    1. So the shapewear I love has been discontinued, and there’s really nothing like it on the market. Sometimes I think I should design my own line. Haha!

Both have the camisole or tank top option.

All of those above are good for wearing with pants. They tuck in and stay put fairly well.

  18. This is my favorite look on you! Fabulous color and I really like your hair styled this way – perfect for your face. The long cardigan is a great look for you too – long and slim. Beautiful for fall. 🙂

  19. I reall love this look! Yellow looks so good on you. I don’t generally think of it as being one of my colors, but this post is making me reconsider. I do have a butter yellow cardigan.

  20. Great outfit JoLynne.   Would you style this cardigan differently come winter or would you still wear the tee underneath?

    1. I’ll probably wear a long-sleeve tee underneath for extra warmth. I have a stripe one that would be cute, or a plain white or grey. Some would put a white blouse underneath, but I never wear those. I find them uncomfortable, especially when layered, but that would look really nice.

  21. This color looks SO great on you! Not many people can wear it. You look beautiful as always. love this casual outfit.
