My 5-Minute Face

5 minute makeup square

I used to be the type of girl that would never leave the house without her face on, but those days are l-o-o-o-o-ng gone. In fact, right now as I update this post, I am not wearing a stitch of makeup. Zilch. Nada. It’s not pretty, but some days it just doesn’t happen. I make an effort to wear the makeup basics every day, but I’d say that I’m at about 90%. Okay, maybe 85%. Just keeping it real.

Nevertheless, I thought it was time to update this post on my basic 5-minute face. When I go out at night or to a luncheon with girlfriends, I take more time and wear more products, but for an everyday makeup look, this is what I use. It takes about 5 minutes.

These are the products I currently use.

My 5-Minute Face

5 minute makeup

Supergoop CC Cream // MAC Mineral Powder // MAC Blush // Champagne Eye Shadow Pencil // Eyeko Liquid Eyeliner // Sonia Kashuk Eyelash Curler // Benefit They’re Real! Mascara // lip liner // Nude Pink lipstick

Yep! All that! Yes, I can do it in 5 minutes. I even timed myself!

I love this Supergoop CC Cream. It goes on quickly and easily and evens out my ruddy skin tone. Read my full review here. After that, I may brush on some MAC mineral powder in medium dark — just enough to get rid of the shine. (I will switch to a lighter shade this winter.) Then I swipe on some blush. This blush is a fantastic color, but the name leaves something to be desired, ahem.

Once my skin is evened out and radiant, I move the focus to my eyes. I love this champagne Eye Shadow Pencil that I got in a Glossybox, but I can’t find a way to purchase it, which really stinks. I’m almost out and I’d love to buy another. When I’m really in a hurry, I just apply the eye shadow pencil to my eyelids, blend with my ring finger, and move on to applying eye liner and mascara. For more details, you can view my video here.

My newest favorite eyeliner is this Eyeko London Skinny Liquid Eyeliner. You can certainly do the eye shadow as eye liner trick I show in the video above, but I am loving this liquid liner lately. It never smudges, wears off, or rubs off onto my brow bone as pencil and eye shadow liners tend to do; and it is easy to apply. I admit, it does take a bit longer than applying eye shadow as liner, which is what I was doing before. But in the humidity of summer (and this fall so far) that sometimes gets smudged onto my brow bone.

I curl my lashes and apply my new boyfriend, the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara — read my full review here. I usually apply 2 or 3 coats for the best results. And I ALWAYS fill in my eyebrows.

Finally, I use lip liner to line and fill in my lips (if I have time) and coat my lips with a subtle lipstick.

That’s it! If I need more of a pick-me-up, I use some concealer under my eyes.

  1. I don’t wear makeup if I don’t have to. I try and try, and no what kind I buy, or how many videos I watch, it still looks unnatural. So I just gave up 🙂

  2. That’s so funny. I was the same way–never leaving the house w/o my face on. I think it’s having kids. That’s when it all changed for me……although it took awhile. I think the first time I left the house w/o makeup was around the time she was 18 months old. I think you look great!

  3. I think what you are doing would take me a good 30 minutes to do! I need a make-up for dummies course!
I’m starting to realize my late 30’s may require some makeup: I’m a no make-up kind of girl. So, if I’m going out I’ve been putting on some mascara but for day-to-day I’ve started to use some faint lip gloss and a powder to hide some of those red areas on my face. I’m not adept at much else, but I’m trying 🙂

  4. I’m realizing how many of my readers are no-makeup girls. I grew up in the South so I’ve been wearing makeup daily since I was 12. LOL!

I’m actually pretty low-maintenance about it (or so my husband tells me). I can get ready FAST if I want to, but the older I get, the longer it takes.

  5. I’m pretty much the same! I use Bobbi Brown products, though I haven’t yet tried Laura Mercier, and I know a few people who use her stuff and love it. I use simply: under eye concealer, tinted moisturizer, and a cover up stick, eyeliner, and mascara. I used to use Nars Orgasm blush, and sometimes I use MAC eye makeup, but rarely. My routine is 5 minutes, too!

  6. I’m one of those no make up gals as well. That being said, recently I’ve wanted to become a little bit of makeup gal. A friend suggested that I do powder, mascara and lip gloss to give the effect without much work. (Actually that was her advice when I asked what I could do when we were going to visit family that thinks I’m strange for not being a make up girl and I wanted to look like I do something when really I don’t 😉 ). So, I’ve got a Lancome dual finish powder and some mascara. I haven’t really found a lip gloss that I like that much though.

    1. Lancome dual finish powder is awesomesauce. I used to use that a lot. I love the Chanel lip gloss I linked to. Not sticky at all. The pink shade I use a lot is quite natural.

  7. Sometimes on weekends if I’m running out to the store I’ll go au natural, and then I see myself and think HORRORS and can’t wait to get my make-up on! Lately for me (I’m 32), concealer and lipstick have been my new additions – and I must say I love them! Most of my products are MAC but my moisturizer is Olay and I’m pretty happy with that. I can do 5 minutes during the week. For a night out, I try to take my time and get a little more dolled up so maybe 10. I like this post!!

  8. I am addicted to DHC’s Velvet Skin. And then of course once i started using Estee Lauder’s liquid mineral foundation I can’t use anything else now. It’s so worth it. I also use their mascara but that’s only because it doesn’t make my eyes swell shut (which is a perk, ha!)

The rest of my products are hit or miss, neutrals probably in the brand of Mary Kay or Bobbi Brown.

  9. Taking 5 minutes is the short cut? That’s how long it takes me at any occasion. Anyway, I use a liquid foundation, powder foundation (which my sister has told me that I shouldn’t use, it dries my skin, or something like that), a little blush (not sure if it shows or not), mascara, eye liner and eye shadow. Sometimes I go without eye liner and eye shadow. The sad thing it that this how I put on my makeup on my wedding day. I really like to go out in public with at least mascara on although I have been getting by with just curling my eyelashes (for quick errands, etc.) I don’t want to spend more time with applying makeup, but on the other hand, it increases my self-esteem when I wear it.

    1. It takes me about 4 or 5 for an ordinary day and more like 10 when I go out. I don’t wear so many more products when I go out, but I take my time with it. I agree with your sis about the powder foundation. That stuff in this post – it goes on quick and looks okay but it definitely feels drying. But liquid foundation takes longer so I save that for the times I really care, lol.

  10. I would not venture out to get the paper without my makeup! I don’t wear that much (foundation, concealer, lip gloss, eye pencil), but it makes a huge difference. If I had to pick one item, it would be lip gloss–a little color helps everyone.

  11. My daily makeup – which takes about 2 minutes -consists of just three things.

    1) Smashbox Sheer Focus Tinted Moisturizer
(I use it mostly for the SPF, since switching to a quality skincare line I no longer need a full coverage foundation)

    2) Smashbox O-Glow cheek stain

    3) Benefit High Beam highlighter, for forehead and cheekbones and sometimes the bridge of my nose

It’s enough to give me a dewy, natural look with a hint of color in my cheeks. Full makeup means doing a dramatic eye with eyeshadow primer, eye shadow (I also use my shadow as a liner), mascara primer and mascara. That adds an extra 3 minutes so puts me where you are – around 5 minutes.

    1. I often use tinted moisturizer in the summertime, but I’ve yet to find one that gives me enough coverage during the winter. I would love to start using highlighter. It’s one of those things on my list. I think I’ll try the Benefit. I have had good luck with their products in the past. Thanks for the suggestion!
