My Favorite Way to Wear Camel

Last week, I started a series on 5 Ways to Wear a Camel Turtleneck, and today I’ve got the second look ready to share with you.

I talk a lot about outfit formulas, and this is one of my favorites when it comes to camel because it’s virtually fool-proof: camel sweater + black jeans + animal print shoes. Top it off with a black jacket, add a few key accessories, and you’ve got a look that is chic and elevated and also very practical.

Last week I used this formula to create a classy winter work wear look. This is a more casual version that I would wear for a winter date night, lunch with a friend, or maybe even the mall if I was feeling a little bit sassy!

Hey, these days, I’ll take any chance I can get to wear cute clothes.

This is the Halogen cashmere turtleneck sweater from Nordstrom. It’s a great price right now, but sizes are finally starting to get depleted. Of course, there are lots of other options out there, and I’ll talk about a few of them below.

I paired it with my black Good American skinny jeans, which are also starting to sell out. It’s that time of year! If you’re in need of a pair, Wit & Wisdom makes a good pair of black ankle skinny jeans for under $100 that are fully stocked.

I wore snake print pumps with my work wear look, so this time I went with leopard flats to pull it all together.

Leopard print got super trendy a couple of years ago, and now it seems like python and other animal prints have taken center stage, but leopard print never really goes out of style. Adding an element of leopard to an outfit is chic and stylish and a great way to elevate a casual look.

And finally, I love to top off a turtleneck and jeans outfit with a leather jacket when the weather permits. I’ve lost track of when I got this one, but it’s the Bernardo brand, and I’ve been very pleased with the quality and how it has held up over the past few years. If you’re looking for something similar, you might try this one.

So yeah, that’s a cute look for when I’m out and about, but when I come inside… off goes the jacket and shoes, and on go the slippers! I love how this pair of UGGs coordinates with my outfit. #itsthelittlethings

These days, I’m much more likely to be wearing this version of the outfit, since I don’t leave the house very much right now.

You can see in this picture, why I usually layer a jacket or vest over this turtleneck, rather than wearing it alone. The drop shoulder is kind of awkward, and it makes me look bigger on top than I really am.

Otherwise, I really like this sweater, but you can try Quince or C by Bloomingdale’s if the drop shoulder is a deal breaker for you. For size reference, I wear a medium in both of those brands, but I have a small in the Halogen.

Of course, Savannah had to find us and crawl up next to me when we were taking pictures. I’m pretty certain she thinks she’s a person, not a dog.

So here’s one more shot of the full outfit. I added a belt and hoop earrings to complete the look.

I realize there’s nothing groundbreaking about black, camel, and leopard print; but it works, and I’m not quitting it.

Next time, I’m going to try styling this sweater with white jeans for fall or winter, so stay tuned for that!

  1. I love camel– on other people! I am finally, at 58, learning to stop buying things that look good on other people, but not me. Like the color camel and turtlenecks. Why does this lesson take so long? I do, however, make exceptions– like buying a pinkish sweatshirt which looks awful on me (also not a good color for me) because it makes me happy. I just wear it at home. The nice thing about these outfits you’re showing us, Jo-Lynne, is that I can copy them using a light gray for the camel. And in this case, I’d substitute my gray/black animal print shoes.
I ordered the same sweater in black as well as the V-neck. I sent the turtleneck back and kept the V-neck. It’s definitely not the same quality as my Nadaam cashmere, but I’ll get a couple of seasons out of it.

  2. Well I’m on the treadmill as I type this trying to keep moving and stretch out the pain and soreness I’ve had in my back thanks to all those early January projects. I had a visit with my chiropractor and massage therapist this week and it’s helping:) I know exactly what you mean about carrying stress and tension in the neck and upper back area that’s my key zone for that! # why I have a chiropractor and massage therapist:) I will say that taking liquid magnesium at bedtime does help with better sleeps plus helps to relax our muscles. Hope you see relief soon it’s definitely no fun! ART(active relief tension)always felt good!
Love the outfit and I can definitely pull it together by shopping my closet!

  3. Love all the classic pieces in this outfit.
I’ve had the same sleep issues and never wanted to take anything more than melatonin but it didn’t work for me so I am now using Vicks ZZZQuil and it works wonders. It recommends taking 2 liquid caps at bedtime but I only take one and It works great. No side effects and non habit forming  so its safe and has made a big difference for me.

  4. Enjoyed your post so much as usual!  What’s your opinion on leather blazers?  I have a couple leather jackets I love, but got a faux leather blazer and it looks a bit “much” on me, lol.

  5. Love the outfit; it is another classic. Will shop my closet.  The camel color washes me out but will swap it for my charcoal grey turtleneck.  We are living in such strange times.  Can relate with sleeping poorly.  I agree with Karen: liquid magnesium does wonders for me to help reduce the tension I carry in my Traps/ neck.  Ask your chiropractor what he recommends. At the risk of a being a broken record 🙂 hot baths with 2 cups of Epsom salts (magnesium in them) also helps to relax, unwind and reduce muscle tension and promote better sleep.  Love the moccasin slippers; looks so cozy. Savanah is a pro!

  6. This is another great look with camel and black!  If you wear those jeans all day, even when you are at home, that says a lot about their level of comfort.  Of course, you don’t have the sacroiliac issues that I have.  I’m glad that your shoulder/arm pain is improving!  Not having restful nights is not good.  If that is a real issue for you, there are prescriptions out there that could help with that, and they don’t carry over into the next day.  I think Savannah adds the perfect touch to the picture.  Have a great day!

  7. Love this look. I have a few camel sweaters but my most recent purchase, and favourite, last summer was from Talbots. I have leopard sneakers, a faux leather jacket and black jeans (which I seem to need to replace every year when they fade) We are currently under lockdown and stay at home orders here in Ontario and its cold…BUT…this outfit that I can certainly pull together from my closet is gonna be 1st on the list when we can get out again (is that ever gonna happen???) Would be a great travelling outfit too – a girl can dream right?

  8. I love this post! I get the best advice and suggestions from you! I have not bought a belt in years, and am considering getting one as I seem to see them a little more often these days. Am also considering making next fall the time I buy a nice black leather jacket if they have a style I like in a decent price range. That Bernardo seems like a good price range and hopefully they will have one in the Nordstrom sale this year.

  9. I like this series idea. My memory can’t seem to recall what the first outfit looked like. I would love a link to other outfit or a picture. I love the help on ideas for more then one way to wear something!

  10. About taking Melatonin. I take 5mg a night, I go to sleep at 10:00pm and get up at 5:30 every morning and I have no lasting effects. I take it 20 min before I go to bed and can sleep for about 6 hours. I can’t sleep without it.

  11. Savannah is adorable! I like the action shot in the first picture where it looks like she is running toward you.

  12. Love camel and black. So classy, but easy. And I love my leopard flats. I hope that by next year when we can go out that all my shoes and boots are still in style. I haven’t worn them since last February.
Oh, and yes, Savannah is a person. At least we treat our dogs as people, right?!

  13. I love this outfit. You look warm but still very put-together. I am a faithful blog reader for several years and I would love to see a post about your intermittent fasting and what you have learned after doing it for awhile. You mentioned doing this awhile back, so maybe it is already in the works.

  14. This was such a realistic Blog today
Jo-Lynne I loved it! Camel is a neutral color but the shade of Nordstroms Cashmere sweater makes my complexion look flawless! Somedays I prefer blue denim over black. But it all depends on our moods I guess. And I like the way you change-up the shoes!

  15. I love this and really need a black jacket like yours to complete the look, otherwise I have everything else. 🙂 If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, you may want to try their melatonin. It is the best I have tried and you are not drowsy in the morning. I hear you on the sleep issues! Aghh!!

  16. Love the look! You may want to visit your dentist and have them check whether you are clenching and/or grinding your teeth while you sleep. This can cause pain in your neck and upper back. You can be fitted with a mouth guard to wear while you sleep if this is the case. Good luck!

  17. I’ve had sleep issues for years (just turned 50) and was desperate to try just about anything. I’ve tried sleeping pills, but those left me feeling funny the next morning and I truly don’t like the idea of relying on medication. Last year I discovered Better You Magnesium Sleep Lotion (it’s infused with lavender and chamomile). I rub a little bit on each shoulder before I go to bed and it really helps me sleep through the night. Whenever I use it, I’m able to sleep for at least 6 hours straight, sometimes more, which is great for me. The lotion does have a scent, which I realize some people are sensitive to, but being a lotion, it’s an option that’s not TOO expensive, so maybe worth a try.

  18. Love this! Camel is always classy. Ordered this sweater and stalking the mailman for it to arrive! I have the leopard shoes, so I’m all set! 🙂👍

  19. The black leather jacket…it is winter here and the temps are such that I need a winter coat when out. Do you still wear a leather jacket in the winter and layer it under a coat or do you not wear them in the winter.

    1. It just depends on where I’m going. If I’m just going from the car to a restaurant, I’m fine in a leather jacket over a sweater. If I’m going g to be out walking around, I’ll opt for an outfit I can wear under a heavy coat.
