My Summertime Style + Gap for Good

I still remember when I discovered Gap. I went to college in New England, and we didn’t have a Gap in my hometown in Virginia, so I was initiated when I was shopping with some girlfriends freshman year and they made a beeline for Gap to stock up on denim and thermals. (It was 1990, by the way!)

Gap quickly became one of my go-to retailers for casual wardrobe basics, and I’ve been shopping there ever since. I always know I can rely on them for quality classic tanks and tees, shorts, and sweaters at prices that won’t break the budget.

But Gap does more than just sell clothes. They’re also seeking to create more sustainable products with their Gap for Good initiative. In the age of fast fashion, it’s encouraging to see a mainstream retailer leading the way by creating and sourcing sustainable products.

These mid-wash denim shorts are case in point. Made with Gap’s water-saving Washwell™ program, these shorts are the perfect shade of indigo.

They have a 5″ inseam, but I ended up cuffing them a second time to make them a little shorter. It’s great to have the option of wearing them longer, though. They’re TTS; I’m wearing the 29.

I also added this fun braided tie belt. I’m not usually a belt girl, but I really like the way it adds a little something extra to this super casual outfit.

It also coordinates perfectly with the cognac suede detail at the back of these white leather sneakers.

These sneakers are cushioned and comfy inside, and I love the minimalist styling with the suede detail at the back. If you’ve been looking for white leather sneakers that won’t break the budget, I highly recommend checking these out.

My top is this stripe U-neck tank in a breathable linen-blend jersey knit. I like this tank so much, I bought it in both the blue and the red.

It has a nice relaxed fit, a straight split hem, and wide bra-friendly straps. It runs TTS; I’m wearing the small.

I also picked up this vintage wash v-neck tee in the dark pink. This tank is super soft and comfortable, and I love the worn-in look and feel.

It’s 100% cotton and comes in a gazillion different colors, and it’s also true to size. I’m in the small, and as you can see, it fits close to the body without clinging. This is pretty much the perfect classic v-neck tee for wearing alone or layering under cardigans this fall.

This mini bucket bag is the perfect addition to this casual look. It also comes in navy, but I really like how the cognac coordinates with the belt and the sneakers.

These outfits pretty my epitomize my ideal summertime style — super casual, but quality fabrics and great fit. These looks are perfect for running errands, grabbing Saturday brunch with the family, chasing kids (or grandkids) at the park, or wherever your summer days may take you.

Best of all, you can feel good that you’re supporting a company that is taking measures to actively protect the planet we all share.

Right now Gap is running a pretty sweet sale — just about everything on the site is marked down, and you can also get an additional 25% off your online order with code SUNNY.

  1. Oh my gosh, that belt and those sneakers are so cute together! They would look great with a striped knit dress. Could also use the belt with a solid black maxi dress and flat cognac sandals….or with jeans and sandals…so much versatility! The reviews for the sneakers said they run large. Did you have to size down? Also do they run narrow (problem for me)?

    1. I love all your styling ideas for this belt! I would say they run big. I am usually 8 or 8.5 — sometimes 9 in running sneakers — and the 8 fit great in these, with plenty of room.

  2. I’m envious of your Maine vacay, Jo-Lynne. I go every year for 2 weeks with my children and grandchildren. They’re there now. Sadly I had to cancel this year because my dad is ill. I love the tank and will order one as this week I put 3 tanks in the donation pile. My 26 year old daughter shops sustainable clothing lines exclusively so it was exciting to see this post. Someone has to save the world! Maybe that would be a fun topic for some posts this fall? Thanks for the morning ray of sunshine.

    1. Yes, I love that Gap is doing some sustainable clothing! I’ve had some requests for more of that so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out. Sorry you’re missing your Maine vacay. Prayers for your dad. xo

  3. I love those tops. They’re something I’d wear at the lake on weekends. I like the shorts too but find that length hits me at the widest part of my thigh. Yikes! No one wants to see that. Do you have any recommendations for shorts with a nice 7” inseam? Have a wonderful vacation.

  4. Gap has the softest tees. I love the bag but couldn’t find the dimentions. Can you tell me? Doesn’t look like a mini.

    1. I’m not at home so I can’t measure, but it’s not super mini like some of the ones trending. It’s a very practical size if you’re one to just carry the essentials.

  5. Do you think the sneakers fit TTS?  In reading the reviews, some say they do, some say they don’t, and a few think they run wide.  I am contemplating them since I can put Dr. Scholls gel arch support inserts in them.  The rope belt is awesome!  I’m glad you had a good visit with your grandfather.  Have a fabulous day!  And yes, by Thanksgiving, I’m usually done with my Christmas shopping.

  6. Hi Jo-Lynne! I’m so glad you’re having such a great time in Maine! I’m not sure if you can help me out here, but I thought I’d see….for some reason I don’t get any sound on the Instagram InstaStories. I have a MacBook Pro and I’ve looked online to see if someone has posted how to turn on the InstaStories sound, without success. I’ve also tried the Help section of Instagram, again without success. I just thought I’d check and see if you might have any suggestions for someone that uses a MacBook Pro and can’t get sound on InstaStories….? Thank you!

  7. I realize these sneakers are more inexpensive than your Viejas but given that how do they compare?

    1. They stack up pretty well. Style wise they’re very similar – I like that they don’t have grommets where they lace up. I also really like the contrasting detail on the heel. Comfort-wise, they’re very soft inside — definitely easier to break in than Vejas.

  8. My memories of discovering Gap are very similar to yours—freshman year of college, 1990! My college town was too small to have one so we drove an hour to the mall! I still find myself shopping Gap, on & off. I like them best when they stick to classics & basics.

  9. Love this outfit on you!  I’m glad Gap is working on sustainable clothing.  That belt is super cute with the striped top, shorts and sneakers.  I could see it being very versatile!

  10. That bucket bag is so cute! I like that the strap is adjustable for shorter people, and removable. The cognac color is lovely, too. I would wear that year round.

I’ve never noticed Gap sneakers before. Those are adorable! It’s good to hear that they’re comfortable, too.

  11. Hi Jo-lynne, this is one of the best way to go in summer, especially when running errands or shopping. I really like the way you paired the bag and sneakers having that leather/suede part.
The white sneakers gives that chick look, and will remain really trendy, especially if you wear them without socks. This is what I do most of the time. Is there anyone that do this, because sometimes I think that is might be weird to wear socks.
    Keep up the good work.
