Printed Pants Outfit for Spring

We did it! We made it to the end of 27 Days of Spring Fashion! Usually I have few outfits banked by the end of a style series, but this time I made it by the skin of my teeth. I imagine this is what it feels like to complete a marathon, ha! I wouldn’t mind if I did nothing but sleep for the next week.

For my last outfit in this series, I’m stepping a bit outside of my comfort zone, and I’m styling printed pants. These are from Gap, and they’re the same style as the jungle green pair I styled for a spring work wear look earlier in the week.

I typically feel frumpy in printed pants, but I thought these were subtle enough that I might be able to pull them off. I kept the look super simple with a white tee and a denim jacket.

These denim lace-up flats help elongate the line of the leg because they pretty much keep the navy line of the pants going. I tried this look with nude wedges, but I felt like my legs actually looked shorter. Plus, these are super cute and so very comfy.

I thought the blue and gold abacus beaded cuff was a fun addition to the outfit, and I layered two gold necklaces — a shorter one to fill in the neckline and a longer one to draw the eye down and in towards my waist.

Finally, I carried my ivory saddle bag. I forgot how well this bag goes with so many spring and summer outfits. I wish it hadn’t been discontinued, but there are still a few at Amazon. I also love this R Minkoff small vanity saddle bag in the putty color. Every time I’m in Nordstrom, I look at it and pet it, lol. It’s such nice leather. I don’t need another grey bag right now, or I’d scoop it up.

A lot of you have asked me to show some casual outfits that don’t involve jeans, and it’s fun to try something different, but I don’t totally love this look. Let’s just say I won’t be trading in my denim anytime soon.

  1. I think it needs a lighter colour denim jacket or even a white jacket for some contrast, especially since you went with blue for the shoes. I enjoyed the Spring series!

    1. Hm, good feedback. As I said to someone else, I have a shorter, lighter denim jacket that I think I was intending to wear with this outfit. It gives me more curves and shows more of the white top, which probably worked a little better.

  2. I understand that frumpy feeling in printed pants, but these are super cute! And I love how you paired it with the simple tee and denim jacket. The denim lace-ups are darling, too! I’ve seen so many cute denim shoes this spring, what a fun trend. Happy Friday!

  3. This is a cute outfit and though you say it’s not your usual style, I admire you for being so willing to step out of your omfort zone! I got a kick out of your comment about petting the saddle bag at Nordstrom’s – so glad I’m not the only one who does things like that! I really enjoyed your spring series. Thanks so much for doing all that work for us. Have a wonderful time in Savannah!

  4. So I have to ask, why you usually feel frumpy in printed pants?? I guess I consider them more youthful (most of the old ladies that I consider frumpy wear the elasticized waistband solid colored pants..either than or ones that are too baggy.)
Besides—the shoes kick it up a notch because they are so stylish!!
I would have loved to see this with the nude shoes too (not that I don’t believe you —just as reference)!
Thanks for hosting the linkup and Happy Friday (in Savannah no less!!)

    1. Hm, I don’t know why, I think to me, they look kind of middle age / 50ish — not that there’s anything wrong with that, lol!! Also, maybe a little too conservative for my tastes? A little sweet. I prefer my outfits to have a bit of an edge. I guess my choice of shoe didn’t help with that. Maybe the wedge sandals or those suede block heel sandals would be better for me.

  5. These pants are awesome! I have 2 pairs of Gap bi-stretch ankle pants and love them! I’m not sure why you think you would look frumpy (I HATE that word, ha ha) in printed pants, you look great! Of course I love a denim jacket with anything, and it finishes off the outfit nicely! For a nice pop of color you could’ve added your pink shoes/bag. Have a wonderful time in Savannah, can’t wait to see some outfit pics from there! Say “hi” to Paula Deen for me! HA HA!!!!

  6. Darling outfit!! Do not have nerve for printed pants! But think they are super cute on you! Have some good shrimp and grits while you are in Savannah and maybe a mint julep! Soak up that Southern stuff! Enjoy!! Julie L, , Atlanta, GA

  7. You do NOT look frumpy! ???? I am a teacher, so printed pants are a go-to for me. You should try more…they can be a lot of fun! Happy weekend!

  8. Love the pants and the shoes, but I see why you don’t love it. I think a different top would work better, without the boxy jacket. The silhouette is a little off. (Not that you asked for my unsolicited advice and slightly negative comment, lol- I usually refrain from this type of comment but you did state that you don’t totally love it.)

    1. Happy to have your constructive feedback. 🙂 I think that makes a lot of sense. I have a shorter, lighter denim jacket I think I was intending to wear with this outfit, and it gives me more curves and shows more of the white top, which probably worked a little better.

  9. I like the outfit and love the shoes. Question whether the laces stay put while wearing the shoes? Or do they loosen as you wear them? I saw a pair of “faux” lace up shoes which were flats with the laces across the top of the shoe but not the ankle and am wondering what you think of them. Thanks for any advice. Love your blog!

    1. I wore them all day that day (changed to jeans tho, lol) and they do come untied with the jeans are allowed to come down over them. Another day I wore them, I cuffed the jeans so the tie showed, and they tied much better, so that’s what I’ll do from now on. I also have the faux laceup style and I like them a lot.

  10. This outfit is super cute. I think I’d be inclined to also try dressing those pants up just a tiny bit. I’m picturing them possibly with your high nude wedges and that gorgeous white peasant blouse with lace insets you recently styled.

  11. Thanks for braving the printed pants for us! LOL! You styled them well – I always think of pj’s so I’m not even brave enough to buy them or try them on! Have a wonderful weekend – you are rockin’ that jacket and those shoes!

  12. I’m working from home on this rainy day and was all ready to don jeans this morning. Your post made me remember I have a pair of print pants from Old Navy (I think I’ve worn them once!) so I was inspired to instead style those with a button-up no-iron shirt, denim jacket, pink belt, and metallic loafers. Made me feel so much better to step out of my comfort zone/regular uniform. Thanks for getting me to the print pants side of the street!

  13. I can totally relate to this, as I feel the EXACT same way in those kind of pants. I actually did this course “Dress Your Truth” and it verified my “gut” reaction to certain styles and prints…how it’s more of a personality kind of thing. My daughter can pull off some of the craziest outfits and they look GREAT on her, while I would look like a clown in the same thing. I HIGHLY recommend the course (it can be a little new agey”, but I just ignore that part). It has saved me from many fashion flop purchases! Now, I can appreciate a trend, pattern, or color on someone else, but know it wouldn’t work on me. Anyway, you always look fabulous in what you wear, but I think it would answer your questions on WHY you don’t “feel” fabulous in it! Have a WONDERFUL time in Savannah, sorry to be so lengthy, lol.

  14. The pants look like something out of my comfort zone as well but I have to say they look great on you. Love the shoes with them too!

  15. Welcome to my home state! I hope y’all have a fabulous time! Maybe y’all will decide it’d be nice to live where you don’t have to deal with the bitter cold and snow.
Thank you for stepping out of your comfort zone to wear the printed pants. The print doesn’t jump out at us. The shoes are awesome!

    1. Haha, don’t tempt me! I just have to remind myself how hot and humid it was when I was here last October. I did not like that for fall – and we have beautiful fall in PA. So that is what I keep telling myself. Spring stinks but fall makes up for it. 🙂

  16. Are you staying downtown Savannah? I think that is a cute outfit but understand what you mean. I like solid pants/jeans better also and prints on top.

    1. We’re across the river at the westin. I really wish we’d stayed downtown tho. It’s not very convenient, especially for taking multiple outfit photos. I like the backdrop of the city better than the resort.

  17. I’m not loving this look, either. I do like windowpane print or stripes. The rest seem too cutsy.
What’s your take on embroidery? I’ve been seeing it everywhere.

  18. I think the printed pants are cute, but I think they need a lighter, more flowy top. The Joie white boho blouse you’ve worn on the blog before would look really cute and paired with your black block heeled shoes.

      1. I agree with Heather. After looking at this outfit again, trying to figure out why I didn’t like it, I realized it’s not the pants but what it’s styled with. Your Joie white blouse and nude espadrilles would look great with these pants. The navy lace up shoes have too much detail and compete with the pants while the simple tee and jean jacket are too structured and plain. I’d love to see you style these again so we can see them another way. I’m thinking we’ll love them!

  19. I like the print pants especially since their slimming, getting rid ot
f my pazlos thats been hanging in my closet for a while and getting these. Have fun in Savanah its beautiful use to live not to far from there . If you like dinner river boat rides they have one that goes the Savanah river, and you have to do at least one ghost hunt so much fun

  20. I like the concept of your outfit, the printed pants are cute and I love denim jackets. But, I think this outfit needed some color. Maybe a peach or orange blouse, or even that beautiful Kelly green that you love. I would love to see this again with a color to make it pop.

  21. Okay…..here is what I’d do. I would get rid of the flats and put on a low heel in a nude. Then I’d get rid of the jean jacket…..sometimes I think they can date outfits, especially with print pants. I’d try a mid sleeve white sweater. I know exactly what you mean about print pants and the frumpy look. I have found I have to wear more of a heel and make sure the leg is slimmer, like these you’ve chosen. I’d add color in the purse. I do see the concept you were doing with keeping the shoe the same color, but I think you need a heel. You might later when you don’t need a sweater or jacket, try a colored t-shirt. So many colors would work. Others recommended more feminine top you own, but then its going to look more cutesy for you. You want edgy right? 🙂
