{Not So} Basic Navy & Khaki Outfit

Hello, friends! I’m back home in PA, and there’s no one here to bring me coffee or serve me shrimp & grits for breakfast. What is up with that!?!

Nah, it’s all good. There’s truly no place like home, even if I do have to brew my own coffee and make my own breakfast.

As I was watching Survivor last night, snuggling on the couch with my littlest, my oldest in the chair next to us with his iPhone in hand, my middle in the other room with her headphones on editing a YouTube video, and my husband working on the computer in the dining room, I couldn’t help but think what a blessing it is to be able to enjoy the ordinary, everyday moments. It’s good to be home.

I’m back today with a casual navy and khaki outfit that I styled around these khaki skimmer jeans from White House Black Market. This is a simple outfit that anyone can copy, but the details keep it from being too basic.

It’s kind of funny because I was patting myself on the back for buying pants that aren’t jeans, and then I came home and looked them up online and discovered they actually call them jeans. I give up!!

But these really do read more as pants than jeans. They’re casual, but the edgy zipper accents and moto-inspired styling elevates them far above your basic khaki pants. These pants are intended to fit snugly, and they do stretch out, so I recommend sizing down. I purchased the size 6, although I typically wear an 8.

On top, I’m wearing this fine-gauge navy V-neck pullover that I got from Stitch Fix last year. It has an interesting step hemline and ribbing on the shoulders, which add interest. Unfortunately it shrunk up a bit, even though I washed it on gentle and laid it flat to dry, so it’s slightly too short in the front. The proportions work out okay because of the ankle-length pants, but in my perfect world, it would be about an inch longer.

At first I put on nude flats with this outfit, and it was cute and fine, but I felt like it needed something more. I went back to my closet and looked around for inspiration and spotted these burgundy suede flats I picked up at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July. Perfect!

My shoes are sold out, but the Felicia Flats actually come in a burgundy suede, and these burgundy leather Born flats are cute too. For a splurge pair, the Tory Burch Minnie Travel Flats come in a Port Sparkle Suede (they look more like leather, tho) that are gorgeous.

For jewelry, I wore teardrop earrings and a 3-disc necklace along with some Alex and Ani bangles. If I had a chunky burgundy bracelet or necklace, I would have added that to tie in the burgundy shoes, but all of my colorful beaded jewelry is turquoise or white. I need to add some fall colors, I guess!

I actually wore this outfit on Saturday to go to brunch with some girlfriends. It was the first day that really felt like fall here in PA, and it was so much fun to finally wear one of my fall outfits for real! It’s a basic navy and khaki outfit, but the details in the pants and sweater plus the addition of the burgundy suede shoes take it up a notch.

It’s rainy and cool here today, and I have an early morning doctor appointment to discuss my thyroid (bleh!) so I think I’ll break out my rainboots and the trench I bought a few months ago that I haven’t had a chance to wear yet. After that, I have a bunch of boxes to unpack that arrived while I was gone, a ton of email to catch up on, and I’m looking forward to getting the house back in order. The good news is, it’s almost the weekend!

Be sure to visit Cyndi and see the fall outfit she’s styling today! And tune back in tomorrow for the final day of our 26 Days of Fall Fashion!

That really went by quickly, didn’t it!?! Not to worry, there are plenty more fall outfits on the way, and soon we’ll be talking about festive party outfits and holiday gift guides! After all, Christmas is less than 3 months away. Hey, don’t shoot the messenger!

  1. Welcome home! And just in time for the rain! I’m actually glad for the rain, as we need it desperately here in Northeast PA. AND it keeps me inside, thinking of making soup, and doing all those little inside chores that get put on the back burner when the weather is nice out. The colors of your outfit are very stiking. I love all the detail on your “jeans”! The top is such a beautiful color & got me thinking, hey, I don’t have any tops in that color! I must go now & shop!

  2. I love those pants!!!!! I have seen another blogger with a green pair on that are no longer available, I will wait and see if they go onsale!! Great outfit today! and welcome back!!

  3. I would love to see this outfit with a patterned scarf added…to pick up either color of the top or the burgundy in the shoes.

  4. Had those “jeans” in my hand yesterday, but was too lazy to try them on! They are cute, and thanks for the tip on them stretching out!

  5. Great simple outfit! Question about the necklace – it is exactly what I think I need to add a little extra to my simpler tops but reviews I’ve read online say it tangles very easily and many have returned it after untangling it multiple times throughout the work day. Have you found that to be true?

Those pants though! I’m headed shopping this weekend and think I’ll be finding myself at WHBM!

    1. Hey Jodie! Yes, the necklace does tangle but I’ve had it for a couple of years, and I’ve learned to keep it untangled for the most part. It really is the perfect addition to a simple neckline. It makes more of a statement than a single pendant but it’s still delicate. 🙂

  6. I love navy anything so this is perfect! I need to check out those pants. (I won’t call them jeans!) I need non-jean options too! Do you ever put any of your jewelry on your Jo-Lynne’s closet Instagram? You have such cute pieces!

  7. I love these jeans/pants! I have them in olive green and also in dark red. You’re making me think I need to buy the khaki too! They do look good with navy. You look fantastic by the way, that whole 30 thing has you glowing!
