Off-the-Shoulder Sweater + Coated Black Denim

Greetings, and welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! So the biggest shopping weekend of the year has come and gone, and I feel like we can finally get back to some semblance of normalcy around here. Phew! I hope you all found some amazing deals on everything you were shopping for. Paul and I knocked out most of our Christmas shopping yesterday, and that feels really good!

This weekend I have 3 holiday events to attend, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, so I’m dedicating this week to holiday party outfits of varying degrees of formality. Yesterday I shared the first of two looks I’ve put together with these coated denim pants and black suede pumps, and this is number two!

I was immediately drawn to this bow back sweater because of the gorgeous color, and I always like a winter party look that has long sleeves so I don’t have to worry about being cold. They’re calling this an “at the shoulder” sweater because it sits higher than most off-the-shoulder styles, which is nice for those who feel self conscious wearing something that completely bares the shoulders. Plus it’s a little warmer this way.

It has a bit of a sheen to it, which makes it festive for the holidays, and I also love the velvet bow detail on the back. That makes the sweater, in my opinion!

This sweater appears to still be 40% off, although the White House Black Market website says their promo ended yesterday. If you like it, grab one fast and see if the discount code works. (Your code will appear at the top of your screen. It’s a one-time use only, so get anything you may want in one order.)

I love White House Black Market for dresses and festive tops at the holidays. They do a really good job for our age group — their styles are on trend but classic, and I’m always pleased with the quality for the price point especially when they run sales like this one. Also, they carry petites and plus sizes, and this sweater is available in both. It’s also available in a pretty blush color.

We discussed these pants yesterday, but for those just tuning in, the coated denim gives them a leather-like look with the comfort and affordability of denim. I like how they give a classic sweater and pumps a more edgy vibe.

I’ve been wearing the DL1961 Emma legging jeans for years, and these have the same great fit. They’re all 50% off thru 11/30, which is an amazing deal and practically unheard of. If you’re ordering, I recommend sizing up one from your normal. I always wear a size larger in DL1961 than I do in most other premium denim brands.

If you’re not into the coated denim, another option would be these velvet slim ankle pants or these slim bootcut pants. Any of the above would look great with this sweater; it just depends on your personal style and the dress code of your event.

I carried a black leather tassel clutch and wore black suede pumps. Both are old but I’ll link up similar styles below. I accessorized with these mixed metal chandelier earrings. I could probably go with something bigger since they’re the only accessory I’m wearing, but they work fine.

This outfit is pretty simple — it’s really just a sweater and jeans, but the luxe fabrics and the fun off-the-shoulder neckline and bow detail on the top elevate it to a festive look that would be appropriate for a variety of events during the holiday season.

  1. Love this on you!  SO beautiful!  That sweater is scrumptious.  Everything is great; shoes, clutch, pants — love it all!  I wish I had holiday parties to go to so I could justify buying it all, LOL.

    1. WHAT!!!  This is wonderful news!   Hahahaha.

PS to J-L: I already loved the sweater from the front…but the tie-back detail…????????????!!!

  2. You look so beautiful ! Are you a “ winter season” You look great in purples and pinks of all shades and bright!

  3. I was checking out the DL1961 website yesterday. I’m interested in trying them at this great sale price. But, nowhere could I find a size chart with waist and hip measurements that correspond to the sizes. I believe there are shipping fees, which I would prefer to try and avoid!

    1. Yeah, it’s free shipping over $100 but there may be a return fee, if you order 2 and only keep the 1. I don’t see a sizing chart either, but I know they run small. I always size up one with them. Their 29 is closer to a 6 than an 8.

    2. Yeah, it says: Please note that a restocking fee of $7.95 will be applied to your refund. Also, you have only 15 days to make the return. Just FYI for anyone reading along. 🙂

    3. In my opinion, it depends on the style jean.  I bought skinnies in a size 28, boyfriends in a 27, and a bootcut in a 28, but I need a 27 in the bootcut.  I am always a 28 in premium denim brands (AG, Citizens, Hudson, Paige, True Religion, Miss Me, Lucky and even Gap; however, I can wear a 27 in some of the DL 1961.  For reference, I am 5’5 1/2 and 125 lbs.). Take this with a grain of salt because it is only my experience.  Definitely try them.  They are amazing!????.  Maybe Nordstrom has a size chart.???

  4. Fabulous outfit!  The details on the sweater definitely take it up a notch.  Three parties in one weekend!  By next Monday you will need a day of rest, for sure.

On the days we are at home, I too, have all of the inside Christmas lights and tree on.  They are so calming to me.

  5. Fabulous outfit and perfect for holiday parties. I am now considering some coated jeans and will have to keep an eye out for some in petite as I’m out shopping. Thank you for all the great posts on the holiday sales. You definitely worked hard to keep us informed and it really helped. It was so hard not shopping for myself with all of the great deals. So I just stuck to my Christmas list and ordered some boots for my husband from Rackroom Shoes from a post Cyndi posted of her husband wearing them and they were a good deal. Then also ordered some boots for my daughter from Nordstrom. Shes into Timberland but they weren’t on sale.

  6. i love the bow on the top, i had looked at some coated jeans yesterday but wasn’t sure how they would look on, now i think after seeing you in them i am going to go back and try them on. Beautiful as always

  7. That’s a great outfit! I’m glad to know about the “at the shoulder” sweaters because I’ve been wondering if not all “off the shoulder” sweaters are created equal lately. I’ve seen some on people that looked like maybe they were meant to be worn higher on the shoulder, so now I know.

  8. I think you did a great job with all your Cyber Monday info. After all, you ARE a fashion blogger!   As for your outfit…Another stunner.  You certainly have the shape for those coated jeans!  The color of the top is gorgeous!  My Cyber Monday shopping was all over the place!  Our 4 year old granddaughter wants a radio & a wall clock!  I’m surprised she even knows what a radio is!  But this Grammy made it happen!  Enjoy your day & decompress from all that shopping!

  9. Such a classy outfit! That sweater is so pretty! I’ve not been a big fan of the “cold shoulder” but I do like the “at shoulder” a lot.  The “at shoulder” seems more timeless and sophisticated to me but that’s just my opinion! Have fun at your parties! ????

  10. I really like the outfit, and agree that the “at the shoulder” would suit me better than the cold-shoulder trend.
I ordered a velvet jacket at Gap (suggested as a denim alternative by AYW), some jeans from there in the hope that they’ll be a little longer than my others w/o having to be hemmed (the curvy perfect boot cut is the bomb).
I’m stuck on my other shopping b/c I’m having trouble finding free shipping….
    Have fun at your parties!

  11. Love the holiday outfit. I only have 2 events this season and both will be fairly casual. Thanks for sharing a casual look. I bought a pair of Articles of Society black coated jeans last winter and have been surprised by how often I’ve worn them. I love the suede pumps. I must have 5 pairs of black pumps in different heights and textures, but no suede. I may have to rectify that.

I did most of my Christmas shopping online over the weekend and the boxes are already starting to come in. My best buy last week was this J. Crew sweater– I can’t remember if you styled it or not, Jo-Lynne. It has a great silhouette that’s a little different than the classic V-neck, banded at the hips style sweaters I wear and it isn’t itchy! The gray color is divine. I do wear a black cami under it because it’s a little short in the front, but I’ve worn it twice and gotten compliments both times. If I hadn’t vowed not to buy any more doubles of items, I’d get it in another color.

  12. Beautiful outfit!!  As for shopping, I enjoyed your guides and thought it was a good balance.  I liked that you included pics for the things that you have styled.  I loved the Bloomingdale’s post from last week and pulled the trigger on the Sorel boots and Aqua sweater when I saw the sale prices yesterday.  I sent my husband links to the gloves and scarf too! We’ll see if he gets the hint!  Ha ha!

  13. I love the coated denim! It seems like a much more sophisticated look than leather or faux leather leggings (which I have tried and felt very awkward in, like I was trying too hard to be cool and hip lol ). Can they be worn casually or are they strictly for dressed up events?

    1. Oh, I totally think you can wear them casually. I do tend to wear them more for “night-out” kind of looks though b/c they have a bit of an edgy vibe. They would be cute with OTK boots too.

  14. I have been stalking the DL1961 site ever since you first wrote about their sale. I have some Florence instasculpt from a couple years ago that I love for what they do for my rear and legs. How would you compare the fits of Florence and Emma? The pair I want is red and a final sale so I wanted to get another opinion before ordering. Also, people still wear colored denim, right? Please tell me if they are on their way out. 🙂 Thanks for all your advice! This stay at home mom would be stuck in 5 years ago styles without you.

    1. Hey Nikki. Yes, people do still wear colored denim! 🙂 They may be on their way out… but I think they’re good for a while longer. The Emma is an inch shorter than the Florence, and they have a lower rise too. I love the Emma – I like the length better on me. (I’m 5’5″.)

  15. I thought you did a great job with the Cyber sales – was quite helpful and I did order several things – ha! I ordered the coated denim pants and I can’t wait to get them. Thanks for always doing such a terrific job covering information and styling!

  16. Thanks so much for all the work you do. You did great on the posting all the great deals. I really can’t believe how much was out there.  I didn’t do any Cyber Monday shopping, as I tend to shop ahead some, as don’t like waiting until the last minute with so many to buy for and I don’t want to run into no sizes or what I want left.  I got good deals though. I usually don’t buy anything unless its 40-50% off.  🙂  LOVE your outfit today. I just love the bow detail on the sweater and the AT the shoulder is more my style for my age.  You look sooooo good in that color. I don’t think I have any holiday parties this year to attend.  My husbands job isn’t planning one this year.  Its okay though.  I really don’t like to have real dressy clothes hanging in my closet for just a few events.  But, if I had one to attend, I’d go with  your suggestions. Have a great day.  I too LOVE to enjoy my tree lights on all day if I’m home.

  17. You look ready to party! Love the pretty sweater, it’s a great color on you. I ordered a pair of coated jeans to try from Banana Republic Factory yesterday. They appear to be sold out online now. The discounts were amazing for Cyber Monday!

  18. I love that sweater. I recently bought an “at the shoulder” sweater in turquoise. I love the look. Just a tad sexy. The bow in the back of yours in adorable!
I think you did a great job of presenting the sales. Do what you know and that is fashion.

  19. I think your Black Friday/Cyber Monday  lshopping guide was amazing! You didn’t miss a thing! I finally ordered the Splendid open cardigan hoodie in the swan color thru your link (I’ve wanted it for a long time!) as well as a couple things from the Tory Burch website (I bought a small TB makeup bag to use as a gift and another pair of Minnie flats for me in the tortoise color. I’m hooked on those flats….the most comfortable and cutest ever!)

I struck out with finding a Nintendo Switch console for my son ???? Both Amazon and Best Buy are sold out.

I am definitely ordering this beautiful “at the shoulder” sweater you are styling in this post…..it’ll be perfect for my work holiday party.

    Thank you!

  20. I really enjoy the clothes you style. You always look lovely and wear the clothes well. Makes me want to order all them!!
I’m older than most of your followers but I love pretty clothes & try to dress stylish. I’ll be 77 on Dec 6. I don’t want to look frumpy. Lol.

  21. I love the off the shoulder look.  So pretty and a beautiful color on your skin!  Do you mind sharing your thoughts on strapless bras for these kinds of looks?  I’m struggling to find one that works and it’s discouraged me from any one-shoulder or strapless dresses/tops.  I’m not small up top (a 36C), so I feel like the girls are always, uhm, well – I feel like I have to constantly pull up a strapless bra and never got comfy with one.  (If you already did a previous post on strapless bras, just point me in the right direction.  I’m new to your blog.)  Thanks!
