Oh Hi! I Almost Forgot I Had A Blog.

Well, not really.  But life sort of got in the way of ye olde blawg, and I don’t expect it’s going to let up this week.  This morning I woke up to my 6-year-old hurling herself into my bed exclaiming, “Mama!  This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for!”

“It is?” I mumbled in my groggy sleep-induced stupor.

“Yes!  It’s our spring break!  I get to be with you EVERY DAY!  Aren’t you EXCITED!?”

Alas, this is the dreaded much awaited Spring Break and the weather forecast couldn’t be more threatening.  In an effort to stay sane be a fun mom, we have plans every day.

And yes, I assured my daughter that I am beyond THRILLED to spend every waking moment with her this week.

woman-dishesFirst I have to get through today.  We are entertaining one of my husband’s colleagues from work, which I am happy to do because my husband doesn’t ask much and this is important to him, but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t causing me a teensy amount of stress.  I’m just SO out of the entertaining habit.  I used to be a constant entertainer (not to be confused with consummate**!)  It was very casual, nothing fancy, but in our old house, we had people over ALL the time.   It was like second nature to me.

Nowadays, notsomuch.

Knowing I’d be home with the kids all day, I tried to get my act together yesterday.  I made this.  It’s an old favorite in our household.  And this morning, I made a cheesecake.  All I have left to do is make garlic bread and a vinaigrette for the salad.  And set the table and get the house in tip-top shape and keep it that way with three kids and their assorted friends underfoot.  AND make myself look presentable, which is a feat in and of itself.  All that by 5:00.

Piece of cake, right!?

Or, cheesecake.  HA!

** VOCABULARY CLARIFICATION

consummate – adjective |ˈkänsəmət
showing a high degree of skill and flair; complete or perfect

You know, as opposed to

consummate – verb |ˈkänsəˌmāt
make (a marriage or relationship) complete by having sexual intercourse

Just wanted to make that abundantly clear!

  1. You can do it! I’ll always remember your post about trying to get everything ready for your bunco group. It was hilarious. If I remember correctly you weren’t even dressed yet when they got there, but that was OK. Am I remembering correctly?

  2. Yeah–we may have people coming over Saturday. “May”? I’m in denial. We finally asked, and they said yes, so they ARE coming.

I used to do it much more as well. It’s harder with kids — more kids, older kids etc.

Have fun. Our spring break is next week.

  3. So, reading your blog today was the first time I actually read the date. I’ve been up for three hours and I just now remembered it’s my hubby’s bday! (I know, bad wife!) Think I’ll make your lasagna as an act of contrition. =) … oh. and a cheesecake. Redemption is not an easy process.

  4. Okay, did I see a reference to Bunco? I love the Bunco. It’s hard to have this love/hate relationshipw with kids days off, isn’t it? Last week we had an unaccepted “flood day.” It totally messed up MY plan, but I enjoyed their company nonetheless! Good luck with the entertaining! You’re good enough, you’re smart enough, and garsh darn it, people like you!

  5. I can’t wait to see what you do with your kids every day over spring break — good luck! And thanks for the site for the lasagna recipe and the chicken scallopine from earlier this week. I can’t wait to try some true and tested recipes!!!

  6. Thank goodness you cleared that up for us 😉

Hope your night went well and you enjoy your spring break as much as me. Argh!

  7. Too funny! The day we’ve been waiting for!! LOL!
We have Spring Break also and it is forecasted to rain all week.

I have got to come up with some things to do.

  8. Love the honesty about spending all week with your daughter. . . I’m (ahem) looking forward to that next week, and it’s good to know we’re not alone out there. And my social skills have definitely declined in the last decade or so. Good for you for getting back on the wagon.

  9. Cheesecake! I’ve been wanting a slice of that ever since I gave birth – preferably with cherries on top. But I won’t settle for the store-bought kind so I suppose I’ll have to put on my culinary hat. Do you have a good recipe to share? 🙂
