Oh Summer, It’s been so long. I almost thought you’d never come.

I feel like I’m coming out of hibernation.  Like I’ve been waiting since last September, just biding my time until the return of summer.  There’s nothing like it — the warmth, the breeze through the open windows, the sound of the birds, waking up to full sunlight at 6am, the sound of kids playing outside, the itch of a fresh sunburn…

Okay, so not EVERY thing about summer is idyllic.  I spent way too much time in the sun at the park yesterday wearing a tank top, and now I’m paying for it.  Note to self: Self tanner does not equal base tan.  I knew this, but it’s funny how your mind plays tricks on you.  Or at least my mind’s a jokester.  I don’t know about yours.

So back to my love affair with summer.  I know what you’re thinking.  It will get old.  In just a few weeks I’ll be complaining about the heat.  That come September I’ll be begging fall to get here.

Nope.  You’re WRONG.  I lament the end of summer every year, and every year I dread winter more and more.  I have no idea why.  It’s not like I don’t enjoy the changes of the seasons and all the holiday festivities that come along with cold weather.  But still, all the while I’m waiting for the return of summer.  I have been so happy lately.  I am more content and less crabby with the kids.  I really do think my change of mood is due in large part to the weather.

Its FINALLY warming up here in PA.  It’s been a cold spring, but I’m expecting this warm snap to stick.  It BETTER, that’s all I know.  I am so totally and thoroughly DONE with winter.

Good-bye, winter.  Good-bye dry skin and winter coats and gloves and hats and scarves and mittens.  Good-bye static electricity and cloudy skies and frigid temperatures and achy joints.  Don’t hurry back.

  1. Eh… not such a fan of the heat & humidity combo — but I think that’s because my thin Canadian blood has not acclimated to these Philly summers yet. It’s only been 8 years. All I can say is THANK GOD for the swim club.

  2. Oh my! 🙁 I dislike being hot and sticky and sweaty. I am embarrassed that my make-up is melting. I hate the mosquitos and wasps and ticks and poison ivy in the yard. I know, I know, it’s all God’s creation and I need to appreciate everything He gives us. I practically LIVE in air conditioning all summer.

Now, this cool Spring. I LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. So crisp! The chill on my arms! The flowers! No bugs! Wearing my jean jackets. 🙂

  3. It’s not just been a cold spring – It’s been a RAINY spring here in PA! I am excited that I can finally put the cute spring and summer dresses on my little girl!

  4. I love summer too. We have a magic summer planned…sleeping late, romping with cousins, afternoons at the swimming pool, library reading club, Fruit Loops, cartoons and a good old-fashioned road trip.

  5. I’m happy for the trend of warmer weather and the beginning of all things summer for you. Over in my neck of the woods though, we are already in melt mode. It’s 2 shower a day weather. Plop me beside a pool and I am A-OK though.

  6. Summer in Phoenix, AZ is usually when we all plan to get out of town. It’s HOT and I mean HOT. But I still enjoy it. What you are talking about is our Winter. I know it’s crazy. I long for September or October because that means the temps are going to start going down. I don’t miss gloves, hat, and coats that’s for sure. No matter what kind of weather we all have, you can’t beat the lazy days of summer!

  7. I’m in MD, and I couldn’t have said it better myself. Life is so much better now that the warm weather is here. I’m ready for the kids to be out of school and for days at the pool!

  8. And hello flip flops, bermuda shorts, and weekends at the lake!

Summer is my favorite time of the year. That may change when I am, say, 9 months pregnant and the temp is in the triple digits…but maybe not.

  9. i love love love these blazing hot florida summers. i must be cold blooded because i never seem to warm up enough when i’m indoors. i freeze in the wintertime (as much as december in FL can be called!) and indoors during the summer air conditioning as well. some summer days, when i’m on my lunch break i’ll sit in my car without the air on just so i can “defrost” from being indoors. i want it HOT HOT HOT!

  10. Oh, I love summer too! I think the older I get, the more I crave sunlight and warmer weather. We moved south from Michigan nearly 10 years ago — and I cannot imagine ever moving back. The gray. The cold. The snow. I can’t do it. I’m with you — I find myself in a much better mood when the sun is shining and the weather is balmy. 🙂

  11. I too love the spring and fall. I don’t hate summer, just the humidity of central illinois. I do not like melting like an ice cube, sweating or feeling like I need to shower several times a day!
I do like the sunshine and a nice breeze – I could take 72 degree days with a light breeze all year long. Any idea of where I could get that type of weather all year?

  12. Summer is my favorite season. Hands-down. And up here in Minnesota, she hasn’t graced us with her presence yet. We’ve only hit 80 once, and it was on a cloudy, stormy day.

I’m starting to get frantic for a hot, sunny day when I can put on my shorts, tank tops and head for the lake.

Fall is beautiful, and spring has its joys. (Winter? Not so much.) But summer is my love, my soul mate, my everything.

(And Julie? Sunny and 72 everyday would be San Diego. There’s a reason I lived there for almost 10 years. … Why did I move away, again?)

  13. I know! It’s warm here too. When we left for our trip, it was SO cold–we had to wear jeans and long sleeves, so we were happy to come back to real summer (although until today it was pretty chilly in the mornings).

  14. Summer is awesome! As cold as you were telling us it was this winter where you are, I would live for summer, too.

I am so sad that we have a “short” summer this year becuase of this year round school calendar. I will miss the easy breezy-ness of it for sure!
