Olive + Navy for Fall

I’ve had some requests to style some of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchases that I kept, so today I’ve got a casual fall look with that Vince stripe sweater and the AG Prima ankle cigarette jeans.

FYI, many items from the #NSale just got marked down again, so this is a great time to grab something you missed out on back in August. You can shop the Nordstrom women’s sale HERE.

This stripe wool & cashmere sweater is a Vince piece that you may remember me hemming and hawing about when I first tried it on.

I actually left it at the store that day, but then I ended up ordering it before the sale ended, and I’m so glad I did! I tend to wear mostly solids, so the stripes add some nice variety to my wardrobe, and the olive and navy combo feels fresh and fun.

If you aren’t familiar with Vince sweaters or are wondering why they are so pricey, he is known for creating wardrobe essentials that are modern yet timeless, with a focus on unique details and uncompromising quality. This sweater is a prime example.

Over the past few years, I’ve carefully selected a few of his pieces to add to my wardrobe each season (always when they’re on sale), and they are among my favorites that I wear over and over.

This sweater is 71% wool/29% cashmere, but it’s not itchy at all. As an added bonus, you can hand wash it and lay it flat to dry — no dry cleaning needed!

I typically wear a small in Vince sweaters, but when I tried this on at the store, they only had a medium. As it turned out, I really like the slouchier fit, and the medium is what I ordered.

All that to say, this sweater runs true to size, but you can size up if you like the more relaxed vibe (or if your preferred size is sold out). It was fully stocked as of Friday, when we shot this look, but inventory is getting depleted quickly because it’s 40% off again.

This sweater also comes in a white/grey stripe, and a few solid colors. And here are even more Vince sweaters on sale at Nordstrom.

I realize that even on sale, this sweater is spendy, and I apologize that I don’t have any more budget-friendly options for you if you want to recreate this look for less. I have looked everywhere I can think of, and I didn’t find a thing. If you know of anything, feel free to let us know in the comments.

For this look, I paired this olive and navy stripe sweater with my dark wash AG Prima ankle cigarette jeans. These were also part of the #NSale, although I purchased mine last spring.

A cigarette leg fits like a skinny jean but it’s a couple inches wider at the hem, so it has more of a modern silhouette while still flattering the body like a skinny jean does.

This particular pair has some fading and whiskering to the deep blue rinse, which keeps them laid-back and casual even though they’re a darker wash. These jeans run true to size; I have my  usual 28.

Unfortunately, they’re not on sale at the moment, but some of the AG Prima styles are. Just pay attention to inseam length. Some are cropped, some are ankle-length, and some are full-length. Also, AG jeans are made in the USA, so bonus points for that!

If you want a similar look for less, Gap has these high rise cigarette leg jeans in a dark indigo wash, and they come in a variety of lengths.

These loafers are from last fall, and I thought the saddle leather was the perfect contrast against the dark jeans and olive and navy sweater. They keep the look polished, and give it a slightly preppy vibe.

I am always surprised by how incredibly comfortable these loafers are when I slide them on. They look like they may be stiff, but they are anything but. The leather is like butter, and they have a lot of cushioning in the footbed. I could walk all day in these.

They come in a bunch of different colors, and they run true to size; I have the 8 medium.

This outfit doesn’t call for much in the way of accessories. I felt like a necklace would interfere with the stripes, although perhaps I could have layered 2 shorter delicates.

Instead, I left the neckline bare and went with a medium-sized hoop earring. The interlocking links give a modern vibe to the traditional hoops, and the gold coordinates with the gold horsebit hardware in the shoes.

Although I did show it that way in the very first picture, I’m generally not one to push up my sleeves, so I didn’t wear a bracelet.

I know pushing up the sleeves gives an outfit a little more style and can be flattering, but I’m cold natured. When a sweater has extra long sleeves like this one, I prefer to use them to their full advantage — to keep me warm!

FYI, when a designer is generous with sleeve length, that’s often a sign of a higher quality garment because it takes more material, which costs more to make.

Finally, don’t forget your sunnies! My rag & bone sunglasses were chosen intentionally. I like how the brown tones in the tortoiseshell frames complement my shoes and bag.

  1. Well no wonder it’s hard to find another option for the sweater I don’t think I’ve seen an Olive with a navy stripe before. Love this whole look but can’t do the wool:(  I’ll keep my eyes open for other options:)

  2. I like everything about this outfit! The jeans are a really nice style and the navy and olive look so good together. Great choices Jo-Lynne!

  3. I have never pulled the trigger on the Vince sweaters because the sleeves look so long. When even the models have extra sleeve length, I know it would look ridiculous on my 5’1” frame. I wish they came in petite. I really was impressed with the quality of the Vince sandal this past summer, but I will have to pass on the sweaters. It looks great on you, though!

      1. Okay. Since they were out of smalls, I ordered an xsmall and I will give it a try. I can always return it. I might check the blogger out. Most petite bloggers have a different style than mine. Your style has been something I have aspired to, and you have helped me so much.

  4. Beautiful outfit! Thank you for the link to Nordstrom sale items. As for sweaters, I always love Garnet Hill sweaters and have several. They have beautiful cashmere. I don’t see bloggers featuring their items, I guess GH doesn’t do collaborations with bloggers?? Their catalogs are my favorites, just for outfit ideas.

    1. Yes, Garnet Hill does have lovely things. Unfortunately, no, they don’t have an affiliate program for bloggers, so it’s hard to include them b/c I can’t put them in my shopping widgets.

  5. A fabulous fall outfit and I especially like that the sweater has navy stripes, not black. Have a wonderful week, Jo-Lynne!

  6. I have tried to order this sweater but Nordstrom has made this impossible. They created a .ca website so now I can’t order from the .com website…..and this sweater is not an option on .ca
If someone orders the Large and decides that it is too big…..please ship it to me in Canada! Just make a Reply here with contact info

  7. So cute! Wish I could wear wool. But I’ve had experiences where I think a sweater is wool free. It feels soft to the hand at first but I put it in and wonder why it is uncomfortable and then see label says   10% wool!  I can detect it in any amount. I’m always amazed at people who have no problem with it. To me it’s like being poked by a million tiny little sticks.

      1. I can wear some cashmere but it’s very price but pills unless its the highest quality. I can often find good sweater options at Loft and Stitchfix has been really good about sending non-wool options (it’s one of the reasons I keep SF).

It’s annoying but if this is my biggest problem I’m a very lucky person! Lol

  8. Love this colour combo!💕. It is one of my most frequent pairings. Although I usually do the opposite with a navy top and olive bottoms

  9. Speaking of jonesing for a sweater….I had to endure all of your winter coffee talks in that beautiful Stroopwafel turtleneck : ) I waited too late to buy it last year. But I just checked Everlane’s website and it’s back! The heathered clay or sand looks lovely and will need a spot in my closet : )

  10. This is a great fall outfit!  Just the thought of wearing wool anything makes me sweat, since I’m now hot natured and live in the lower south.  It’s good that you function well under pressure.  I hope that you’ve had a great start to the new week.

  11. I love the outfit and I’m also a fan of Olive and Navy. What do you wear under sweaters for added warm and an extra layer to keep from itching. I need to find something for layering that’s not too bulky.
