Orange Cardigan for Fall #FashionFriday

Hello and welcome back to 26 Days of Fall Fashion! When I do this series, I try style a mix of outfits — some transitional outfits for warm fall weather like most of us are experiencing right now, and some cold weather looks for the cooler days to come.

Today is the latter. I was roasting when we shot this outfit last Saturday, but I know I’ll wear it a lot once the weather cools down.

Long cardigans are having a moment right now, and I’m totally obsessed. I’m usually a pullover sweater kind of girl, but I think cardigans are going to be edging out my go-to pullovers in my outfit rotation this fall and winter.

SALE ALERT >> Get 30% off your Old Navy online purchase. Scroll to the bottom of their site to see the offer, it is supposed to get applied automatically. Plus through Oct 15, get $10 back in Super Cash for every $25 you spend!

I’ve tried a bunch of long cardigans so far this season, and this open-front long-line sweater is one of my favorites. Bonus, it’s only $32 at Old Navy. It is not eligible for the 30% off, though, since it’s one of their “best sellers”.

There are several reason I like this sweater, the first being it is sooo soft. It really feels and looks like it should cost more than it does. I also like that there are no drop shoulders to contend with. I know the drop shoulder is a trendy style right now, but it tends to make my already wide shoulders look bulkier and I like the way this one is cut much better.

The other thing I like about this sweater is that it hits me mid-thigh rather than coming almost to the knee like many of the other long cardigans I’ve tried. The longer length is trendy and fun, but this length seems more practical for everyday wear. It’s also the perfect length for layering over shift dresses and knee-length dresses because you want your cardigan to be a few inches shorter than your dress.

This cardigan comes in a bunch of great colors, but I was drawn to this orange because it just screams fall to me. They call this Deep Rose, but I have no idea why; it’s totally pumpkin orange in my opinion. For size reference, this is a small so it runs true to size for Old Navy.

It’s my natural inclination to keep it simple and wear this cardigan over a white tee, but for this post I wanted to stretch myself a bit so I paired it with a navy and white striped tee. Okay, so it’s not that big of a stretch, but I definitely think it adds interest to an otherwise basic outfit.

This tee is old so I don’t have a link, but this cream and black stripe tee would work just as well. You could also wear this cardigan with that long sleeve striped tee from J.Crew Factory. It would definitely be a cozier option for when it gets really cold outside.

Sometimes people ask about what type of coat to wear over a long cardigan like this. I definitely recommend wearing a coat that is longer than the sweater such as a trench or a wool blend walker coat or a longer puffer coat.

SALE ALERT >> Extra 30% off at Macy’s with code VIP. Ends 9/25. I don’t shop at Macy’s often, but for some reason they always seem to have a lot of quality coats for good prices.

You may notice I have the tee front-tucked in some of these shots and untucked in others. I couldn’t decide how I liked it best, but now that I’m looking at these pictures I think I like it untucked best. It’s not so long as to need a front-tuck, and I feel like with the longer sweater, the longer length of the tee just works, but I think I could go either way.

I finished the look with cognac boots and a moss green handbag. I just love how these colors work together for a festive fall look.

I picked up these tall suede boots at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in July, and I’ve been dying to start wearing them. It’s not quite time yet, but it was fun to give them a test drive on Saturday. They’re really comfortable, and I think they’re so flattering. Plus I just love the cylindrical stacked heel.

If you follow a lot of bloggers, you’re probably going to see these boots a lot this fall and winter. I’ve already seen two other popular bloggers feature them in the past few days.

I can assure you, there is no conspiracy going on here. I know some people get annoyed when they see the same items on a lot of blogs, and I’ve even seen speculation that we’re all getting paid to feature certain products, but that is not the way it works.

We shop for the products we like and think our readers will like, and yes, we get a commission if purchases are made through our links, but we pick the clothes and shoes we feature and we purchase most of them with our own money. When I’m gifted a product to share, I tell you and I also mark it c/o when I list it in the Shop This Post links at the end of my post.

If you ever have questions about how all of this works, feel free to ask. I’m all about transparency here!

So these boots. When I went to Nordstrom on the first day of the sale, I started in the shoe department. I immediately honed in on these Sam Edelman tall boots and the Jeffrey Campbell ankle boots I’ve already featured a few times. I was drawn to them both immediately and I purchased them on the spot. I just think they’re so versatile and chic, plus the quality is great and they’re comfortable too.

For size reference, I sized down to an 8 in these. I usually wear an 8.5 in boots and especially in Sam Edelman shoes, so my advice is to size down. This is the Caramel color.

For accessories, I wore sunnies with brown and gold in the tortoise frames, and then I just added a simple pendant necklace to fill in the neckline. I had this cuff bracelet on from a previous outfit we shot the same day, but I’ll probably wear something more casual with this look in the future, such as my Alex and Ani wire bangles.

This bag was another #NSale purchase and at the moment it is stocked in black and moss green, but inventory keeps fluctuating so if you’ve been wanting it, grab it while you can. It’s also 50% off.

R Minkoff has quite a few bags this color, if you like the moss green. I think it’s such a fun fall color. It goes with a lot because it acts as a neutral, but it is different than your typical brown or grey. I’m particularly partial to her unlined front pocket tote. If I didn’t have this bag, I would definitely be tempted by that one, plus I like the easy access a tote provides.

This is such an easy fall look. I realize there’s nothing original about a cardigan and jeans and boots, but the proportions work out really well with these pieces together (I definitely like it better with the shirt untucked) and the colors are festive for this time of year.

cardigan // similar tee // jeans (option) // boots // similar bag // necklace // bracelets // sunnies c/o

And it’s Friday, so that means linkup day! If you have a fashion blog, I’d love for you to join us. If you’re here for your weekly dose of style inspiration, you’ll find plenty of that here. Have a beautiful weekend!

  1. I love this fall look.  That color is so unusual in a cardigan, I might have to get this one.  I always wondered why I didn’t like drop shoulder tops on me.  Now I know.  Love the boots.  Your comment on Macy’s was interested.  I’ve never shopped there much either but it was the one place I always knew I could go for a good winter coat at a great price.  They went out of business in my area, but I’m set for winter coats for awhile so no worries!

  2. There is no color more fall than orange in my opinion! This is perfect for cooler weather and will be so easy to duplicate. I think this one is so very flattering on you too. It has a nice drape that doesn’t seem to add any bulk at all. And I actually prefer the look with the front tuck, but that’s just me. I will front tuck just about anything with enough length!

  3. Really cute outfit! I picked up that Old Navy cardigan in the olive color – I don’t have anything that color in my closet and think I can make it work with a lot of colors! I even paid full price because I thought it was very reasonable!

  4. Super cute. I was just thinking this morning, I need a new cardigan color for this fall/winter. I love them. This may be it! My daughter’s new soccer club colors are orange and black so it would be perfect to throw on for a game on the weekends if there is a chill in the air too! I struggled for ideas I was comfortable wearing my over the knee boots with so this would be a great outfit idea as it gets colder. Thanks! Have a great weekend.

  5. A long cardigan without a dropped shoulder! Have I mentioned you’re the best!?!? A dropped shoulder style doesn’t work so well on my frame. And it’s from Old Navy so I don’t have to feel guilty for buying it while we’re trying to support two kids in university and have four teens still at home. ????
    Have an awesome weekend!

  6. Love this sweater!! Just clicked your ON link to purchase and this sweater does not qualify for 30% off deal because it’s a ‘Best Seller’, bummer!!

  7. What a great Fall outfit!  I am inspired seeing the different colors together.  Now if I can just ensure my brain it’s okay to mix colors, I’ll be in business.  I love boots, but my feet and ankles don’t, so I can’t wear mine when I’ll be doing a lot of walking.  I just placed an order with Old Navy on Tues., with 20% off; guess I’ll be placing one today for that long cardigan and 30% off.
Have an awesome first weekend of Fall!

      1. I haven’t gotten online yet, so I did not know about the cardigan being excluded.  My quantity of long cardigans is not lacking, so that’s a sign for me.  I am so glad I’ve rediscovered ON, thanks to this group!  It’s another go to store for me to stay on trend without breaking the bank.

  8. I have really never been a long cardigans person but seeing you style them I am thinking that a long cardigan would be perfect for those few cold days we get here in FL. It really never gets cold for a coat, matter of fact last year when I went to visit my daughter in Arkansas for Christmas I had to buy a coat.

  9. Imagine my surprise when I saw you styling the orange sweater I purchased weeks ago!  See, you have influenced me!  It’s been hot and humid here in KC but next week the temperatures drop and sweater weather will be on.  I’ll be breaking out this little orange beauty!  Love the way you styled it!  You look great!

  10. Great outfit.  You really are doing great with putting your outfits together.  🙂  Love how it still works with the warmer temps but says FALL.  Today is the first day of FALL ya’ll.  🙂  Have a great day and thanks for all your outfit inspirations.

  11. This is so funny…I just was wishing I had this exact sweater this morning and had looked it up to see if it was on sale…and also thought that the color name was ridiculous. I have this sweater in the green and black/white (which really looks like denim blue to me) and solid black…but I think I’m going to have to get the orange one, too. These sweaters are SO soft and cozy! I love the way you styled it!

  12. Great outfit love the color combo’s. And yes where is the fall weather? Going to be in the 90’s this weekend where I am in Canada. Not sure what’ s happening LOl but I’ll take an extension of summer any day.
    Have a great weekend

  13. Love this cozy fall outfit! Request for future posts: how to style sock boots for shorties, in particular WHITE boots! Thank you!

  14. Great job with this outfit!  You look fabulous and the colors are beautiful.  I do like the front tuck pic a little better, but no matter this is a great look for fall!  I just finished shopping at Loft with their 40% off but will now need to head to ON for that cardi.

  15. Orange! Oh, how I love orange! I have a sleeveless orange sweater I picked up from Loft clearance that I’m dying to wear. Love the moss green bag, too. And, I’m a big fan of totes. I have a black one from Urban Oxide that’s just the right size. I can fit my Canon 50D into it with a lens and not look like I’m carrying a ton of stuff.

  16. Love the outfit. Even though it wouldn’t be a huge deal to most, I much prefer the slight “front tuck” with the drapey sweater. It gives you shape under the sweater. Just my opinion!

  17. Love this look. It’s a mix of everything that is perfect about fall dressing (of course it will be better when the temps are not in the 90’s), the striped tee, the mid-thigh length sweater and its rich color, the jeans and the boots…and I love that you added the olive colored bag. Thanks for providing another inspiring outfit. – Amy

  18. Didn’t know I needed another cardigan until I saw this color. I noticed that Nordstrom has the linen cardigan in that color now, but at a higher price point. I like that this is not too long.
