Our Monthly Trip to the ER

So it’s been at least a month since we’ve paid a visit to the ER.  You may remember the unfortunate EpiPen incident?  And the Slash-His-Head-Open incident?  And the Enormous Stomach Crisis of 2006 incidents?  Really, there are too many to recount.  We have our own room now, with our last name engraved on the door and everything.  Seriously, I’m surprised they haven’t named a building after us yet.

Out of the blue this afternoon, my son started complaining about a stomach ache.  He tends to be a bit on the melodramatic side (I have NO idea where he gets that from, ahem) so at first we didn’t think much of it.  And of course, being the puke-a-phobe that I am, my first thought was, OH NO!  The Pukes!

But upon further investigation, the pain was very low in the abdominal region, and constant in nature.  And being the stellar mother that I am, I let out a sigh of relief that The Pukes weren’t paying a visit to our house.

Nevermind the fact that my son could have appendicitis or a kidney stone or something serious.  As long as it isn’t The Pukes, I can handle it.  Nice.  Aren’t you glad I’m not your mother?

We did everything we could to keep him comfortable, but he was writhing in pain, so finally, I looked at my husband and said, "Take him to the ER."  So that’s what we did.

Evidently in the car on the way to the hospital, the pain got so bad that my son threw down his Nintendo DS.  Now that has to be true agony.  Because NOTHING separates my son from his DS.

But by the time they arrived at the hospital, he was doing better.  Naturally.  They took him right in and did a thorough evaluation and determined that they basically have no idea what it is.  It could be a kidney stone, it could be referred pain from his bronchial infection, it could be something he ate.  Who knows.  But he seemed to be feeling better, so they sent him home without further ado.

Except that they are concerned that he may have walking pneumonia.  ACK.  He has had a respiratory infection for about a week, and with his asthma, that’s always a bit dicey.  But we thought we were managing it with his nebulizer.  So now we have to keep a close eye on him for the next few days.

The good news is — it’s not The Pukes.  See, there I go again.  Mother of the Year.

  1. The problem with hair is that you can’t help but not notice it. Unless you just scrape it back from your face with clips or something, but then you get that clip-headache from having your hair strangled that way.

I just said a little prayer for your son, I hope he is doing well.

PS Congrats – Nine blogs! I’ll have to email you to get your prices.

    😉

  2. It is the one recurring theme of my life that I can never seem to get the same haircut twice. I’ve tried everything….from not engaging the hairdresser in any type of discussion so she could concentrate to snapping a picture with my cell phone immediately afterwards. Nothing helps. People would be really miffed at me as an RN if I seemed somehow to forget how to put in an IV or conveniently forgot someone’s medical history and performed an unnecessary intervention. sigh.

Glad your son is ok. Keep a close eye on him. Did they do an ultrasound and the whole appendicitis workup?

  3. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve had bad hair day for coming on 3 weeks now. All I can do is blow dry it without styling at all(because of the hand or lack thereof) and however it falls, it falls. Sigh.

Hope your son feels better quickly.

  4. I hope D is feeling better. At least DH was home this time! And I’m looking forward to seeing the haircut!

  5. Are you going to post a picture of the haircut? You can’t use a descriptive word like ‘mushroom’ and not show us a picture!

Hope your son made it through the night with no stomach pain!

  6. I used to hate my hair. Until it seemed like a lot of it was coming out on my brush. Now, as long as it stays attached to my head, it can turn any color or look any way it wants. So far so good. (It’s funny how the thought of being a bald woman can change your perspective.)

  7. Hopefully all that work will help you forget about your mushroom haircut! And I vote for a picture too! I’m getting mine cut next week and I told hubby how I wanted it – he freaked! First of all, he would prefer my hair LONG. Can’t do that anymore with a little one. And it’s so thick on the back of neck that I sweat to death. And it’s starting to get warm down here!

  8. Hey! I am sure your hair looks fine!

I forgot to tell you – did you see the news about the tornado wrecking downtown Atlanta? My sister-in-law was in the hotel there when it was hit. She was at a dental conference! Now that’s panic for you!

Talk to you later. I have bacon burning – as usual. Some things don’t change even on vacation!

  9. I’m sure you look cute and stylish as always. I get mine done this coming Saturday and it can’t come a day too soon for me as I look like Shaggy from Scooby Doo right now. That’s so exciting – the nine new designs! Yay for you! And wow, I’m glad your son’s fine, poor guy. Hope the infection clears up and he’s good as new quickly.

  10. Glad to hear your son is ok. And extra glad The Pukes aren’t landing in your house! I have the same phobia. Blech.
And I’ve been meaning to tell you that I love the blog designs you’ve been doing. I had a little visit to your design site. If I hadn’t just figured out how to design my own I definitely would’ve had you do it for me. Sounds like you’re having fun with it!

  11. Take prenatal vitamins–they always seem to make my hair grow faster. I’m sure you will have something you can feel confident in by the time you take your trip. I hope the boy is doing better.

  12. I’m with you on the PUKE! Hope he continues to improve, so there are no more DS Nintendo separations.

I was going to make a pun about “Hair today, gone tomorrow”, but that would be tactless and insensitive 🙂

Happy St Patrick’s Day from N Ireland.
