Outdoorsy Gift Ideas for the Holidays

Don’t shoot the messenger, but Christmas is less than two weeks away! If you haven’t yet finished up your holiday shopping yet, I’m here to help. Today I’m partnering with REI Co-op to help you share the gift of the outdoors with the loved ones on your list.

wireless headphones // Sorel slippers // wool glomitts // GorillaPod // wool socks // massage roller // Garmin smart watch // Kelty day pack // compression sleeves // earband // womens Craft winter pants // portable charger // Patagonia fleece // Tifosi sunnies // mens gloves // mens Smartwool tights // Balega socks // multi tool // hydration belt

Staying active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and I love giving (and getting) gifts that encourage people to get outside and do something healthy and productive. I admit, I’m not the most outdoorsy person, but there’s nothing like breathing in fresh air on my morning run or soaking up the sun by the pool in the summertime. I’ve even been known to go hiking when I know it will provide quality time with my husband or the kids.

The REI Co-op Gift Guide is super handy. You can peruse gift ideas by price point or by the activity your loved one likes to participate in. Of course, I went right to the running section to make my personal wishlist, but I’ve also included gift ideas for other sports as well.

Outdoorsy Gift Ideas for the Holidays

AfterShokz Trekz Titanium Wireless Headphones // Great for any sport that allows you to listen to your tunes — particularly runners. I’ve been wanting a pair of these.

Sorel Men’s Falcon Ridge Slippers // Spoil your favorite guy with these fleece lined suede slippers. With their rubber outsole, he can still step outside to get the mail.

GloveMits // When it’s super cold outside, mittens are warmer than gloves. I love how these give you the option of accessing your fingertips if you need to use your phone.

Joby GorillaPod Action Tripod // This little gizmo allows active people to attach their go-pro or action camera and get footage of their outdoor adventures. The flexible legs allow them to connect their action video camera to nearly any surface.

Fox River Norsk Ragg Wool Socks // Wool socks are the best for cold weather hiking, and this brand is tried and true — also American made.

GoFit Go Roller Massage Roller // Any athlete in your life will appreciate one of these if they don’t already have one.

Garmin GPS Watches // A GPS smart watch is essential for any serious runner, and I’m sure there are other sports that use them as well. REI Co-op  has a great selection, depending on the features you’re looking for.

Kelty Redwing 50 Pack // This pack is lightweight and provides great organization for a day hike or sightseeing. My husband has had his Kelty pack for 20 years, and it’s still going strong.

Zensah Featherweight Compression Leg Sleeves // These are great for people who run longer distances. They help increase blood circulation and support and help protect against shin splints.

Oiselle Women’s Lux Earband // Another winter sports essential, this earband is nice and wide, plus the fabric is soft and moisture-wicking to keep you dry even when you start to sweat.

Craft Essential Winter Pants // These are on my personal wish list this year. We’ve already had more mornings in the sub-freezing temperatures this season than we get all winter some years, and the winter running tights I have aren’t quite cutting it. Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors doing winter sports — bikers, runners, skiers — would benefit from these pants. I hear they work best when layered over the tights.

Goal Zero Flip 20 Portable Charger // Stay connected while you’re on the trail or sightseeing all day.

Patagonia Better Sweater Quarter-Zip Pullover // Everyone loves these plush pullovers, and you don’t even have to step outside to enjoy wearing them.

Tifosi Sport Sunglasses // These are the best sport sunglasses for the price. They’re lightweight, they stay put and don’t slide down, and there are tons of styles to choose from. I lost mine, so I’ve been hoping to get a new pair for Christmas.

REI Co-op Men’s Tahoma Gloves // These gloves make a nice gift for any guy who lives in a cold weather climate. They’ re perfect for winter sports or everyday use, and they’re touchscreen compatible.

Smartwool Men’s PhD Tights // If you’ve got a guy in your life who is a runner or cyclist, these are what he needs.

Balega Women’s Hidden Comfort Socks // These are my favorite socks for wearing with athletic sneakers for running or working out. They also have a higher style for winter so your ankles don’t get exposed to the cold air.

Topeak Alien II 26 Multi-Tool // This nifty tool is perfect for cyclists, according to my husband. It would make a nice stocking stuffer.

Nathan Trail Mix Plus Hydration Waistpack // I ran with one of these all during my half marathon training and during the race. I like the two bottle style because I feel more symmetrical when I start out — I would try to alternate drinking from each one to keep them even. Or I’d put my electrolyte powder in the one side and plain water in the other. The middle pocket keeps your phone, keys, gel, and other essentials safe.

I hope these ideas help you wrap up your holiday shopping, or perhaps there is something on this list you need to help you stay active during these cold winter months. I’m all about eliminating all the excuses so I don’t have any reason not to get out there and stay active all winter long.

Be sure to place your REI Co-op order before 9AM PT on December 20th to get it in time for Christmas with free shipping. Or you can always order online and pick it up in store same day.

  1. Great ideas! I have the massage roller and it is worth every penny! For anyone who works out and suddenly gets one of those back muscles aches, it is a life saver! Feels so good on sore muscles. Also have that Patagonia sweater which is my favorite for the cold Minnesota winters. It feels like a warm hug every time I put it on. Can’t wait to try some of the other items you listed. I love this lists that you do for the holidays! They have helped me cross out a few people on my gift list!

  2. Very timely post since I just received a REI gift card for my birthday! We are going on a land and sea cruise to Alaska in June so I will check out the cool weather items!

  3. Just saw your pic with your daughter in NYC.  What a lovely picture. Have an awesome day together. So much better than a sweet 16 party ! 😉

  4. Great post.  Glad to see you featured REI.  I usually always buy some Christmas gift from REI and this year I did a lot there for my adult kids.  My husband and I both are members, so we get the 20% off one item each at their yearly Nov. sale.  Great post.  Have fun on your daughters 16th b’day NYC trip.  So jealous.  Can’t wait to hear all about it.

  5. Both of my sons, as well as some other family members, are very outdoorsy/sporty so this post was just what I needed! We love REI and always find great, unique gifts there. I got similar Sorrel slippers for both myself and my husband last winter and they are wonderful! I would definitely buy them again as a gift. Thanks for all the ideas!

  6. Hi Jolynne, I recently did my first Aramco Houston Half Marathon, and this post was quite helpful and informative on ideas to get for outdoors and people into running. I would love to see more of this post in the future 🙂 Thank you!
