Perhaps I Need A “When I Run the World” Category

I have another bone to pick with the powers that be.  Who decided that 10 A.M. is a good time for shopping malls to open in the morning?  WHO?  Certainly not mothers of preschoolers, that’s for sure and certain.

For those of you who are not and/or have not ever been a mother of a preschooler, let me explain my position.  Most preschools start at 9:00 or thereabouts.  So I get up and get myself looking presentable because I have things to do and places to go, and I need to make the most of the precious few hours that all three kids are in school.

So I put my older kids on the big yellow bus and then drop my daughter off at preschool, kiss her rosy cheeks, and hop back in my car.  By then it is 9:10, MAYBE 9:20 if it’s been a rough morning.  Now what?

If my agenda involves grocery shopping, I’m golden.  Grocery stores open early.  But what if I want to go to the mall?  The malls don’t open till 10.  I don’t want to go back home because when I do, I invariably get caught up in some tedious chore like laundry, or more likely a project on the computer, and before I know it, lunch time is upon me.

So that brings me back to my plans to take over the world.  When I run the world, I promise you the malls will open no later than 9:00 in the A.M.  And that is my campaign promise to you.

Until then, you should know that Panera is a great place to kill 30 minutes.  Or 90.  (So much for not getting caught up in a project on the computer.)  But hey.  At least they have these.

I can’t get that at home.

  1. Oh, I totally agree. There’s also half-day kindergarten (as our backwards state of AZ still insists on in some counties…). During that short period of life, I had to pick my sons up at 10:45! Forget any kind of to do list… 😕

  2. Oh you’re cracking me up! I have the same dispute with Sam’s not opening up till 10 am. I want to be home by 10 am! LOL! What’s wrong with these places. I’d rather they close earlier than open later!! I mean you’d think the world would revolve around the MOM because don’t we do most of the shopping? I’m just sayin’!
That coffee yumminess thingy looks divine and I wish I were there not getting caught up in anything with you! Hee! Hee!

    Hugs
    Kim

  3. I can’t wait for you to rule the world so that I can go to the mall immediately after preschool drop off!!!
And YUMMY for your goody at Panera!!

  4. Now I’d be on the opposite end of that spectrum! I’d want places to stay open late, late at night, because that’s MY most productive time! No way would I be ready to hit the store after taking the kids to school! (Maybe because I’m up all night? o.0 )

  5. You have my vote!! I drop my daughters off at school at 8am. Target and Kohls are viable options, but even our Barnes & Noble doesn’t open until 9am. Glad to know that you will remedy the situation when you’re in charge! I’ll be waiting!!

  6. Malls should be open in shifts. The early shift has it opening at 8:00 and open until noon. Then it closes, like siesta time, and re-opens again! at 2:00 and stays open until 10:00. Stores like Target and WalMart get my business more than my local mall because I can go there during “off” hours. I’ve Christmas shopped after I’ve put my son to bed at night. I’ll vote for you!

    1. No no no, I’d cry if they kicked me out at noon. I think they just need to hire more employees and be open 8am to 11pm. But I suppose that wouldn’t help the struggling economy, now would it? *sigh*

  7. I was just thrilled that our Trader Joe’s is open at 8 am now!!
BUT I remember being a high schooler who worked weekends at (Liberty Tree) Mall – and hating that it opened at 9:30 am LOL.

  8. You have my vote! It drives me nuts trying to find something productive to do until stores open and I can accomplish my tasks! Thank goodness for Target. They always seem to be open when I need them! 🙂

When you rule the world, is there any chance you could please have someone deliver one of those fancy coffee drinks to my house every morning? That would be marvelous! Thanks in advance!

  9. Amen sister! Although, I believe the KoP mall opens it’s doors at like 6:00 a.m. for the mall walkers. So, if you are so inclined, you could get a little exercise in while you wait.

There is a book outlet near my office that opens at 10:00 a.m., which makes it really hard to hit on the way in. Boo. I had a meeting this morning, so I was later getting in. Stopped at the outlet at 9:55 and sat in my car and waited the 5 minutes. The guy strolled in at 10:02. The nerve! [Hi, my name is Jen, and I’m a bookaholic.]

  10. You’d totally get my vote to rule the world!
Now that I have children I love the opening earlier idea.
However, when I worked in retail, um… not so much.

  11. Oh so with you!! I always have to waste time … or I end up wasting time at Target which is always a bit too dangerous:)

  12. I face this dilemma, too! It makes me aggravated to know I have to waste some time somewhere before the 10’oclock hour, only to have to rush out after an hour to pick little fella up by 11:30 because I live a little ways out in the stix. Dang.

  13. I SO agree. Although I don’t have a preschooler anymore, I totally remember the days even with a baby who woke up @ 0630 a.m. If the malls opened even at 8 we could’ve been there and back in time for her midmorning nap!

  14. I also hate that they don’t open until noon on Sunday, and are only open until 5 or 6. With a toddler, naptime starts at 1… so then by the time she wakes up, has a snack, head to the mall, BOOM! Only an hour left to get my shop on. BOOOO.

  15. I couldn’t agree more! Just yesterday, I was checking the opening hours of various stores online to see what shopping I could get done after dropping my son off at preschool at 9am. I wound up at Target, but I really wanted to be at the mall! I’d say the malls are losing quite a bit of business from the mothers-of-preschoolers crowd!

  16. Great point! My little one isn’t in preschool yet, but she is ready to go when the older kids get on the bus. I always hate to go back home and wait for 10am. Maybe they are listening…………

  17. That would be a fun carnival! My students are writing a poem right now about when they are in charge of the world, following Shel Silversteins poem “When I’m in Charge of the World”. I always love hearing their responses.

  18. I totally agree with this one. I have thought this myself several times after dropping Shorty off at 9:00am. I have an hour to kill before I can actually shop and if I go home until the malls open then I’m never going to get back out the door because I will be sucked in by whatever work or distractions are at home. You get my vote if you can open those malls at 9:00am.

  19. I vote for you to run the world. 🙂

Most everything should be open by 8am to accommodate the parents of small children. It is so frustrating to diddle and daddle around the house until 10 when you need to run errands.
