Phillies Phans

Almost 14 years ago, I married a Philly boy and all of the baggage that entails.  I can now say that I love the Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks with friend fried onions, soft pretzels with mustard, Tastycakes, and the Phillies.  Along with being a Phillies fan comes enormous heartache.  You see, the Phillies are the losingest franchise in professional baseball or some such nonsense my husband loves to quote.  So last fall, when the Phillies won the World Series, you have never seen the likes of the celebrating.

Well today the Phillies had their ring ceremony, and we were there to witness history.  We dropped our 3-year-old off with my inlaws on the way and drove into the city and arrived at Citizens Bank Park almost two hours before the game so we could be there for the ceremony.  It really was special.

My son could watch baseball all day and not tire of it.  My daughter, however, is six.  And by the time the game actually started, we had been sitting in the stands for almost 2 hours.  You can imagine, I’m sure, how her attention span was maxed out by that point.  I managed to keep her in her seat for the first three innings by filling her full of hot dogs and cotton candy and allowing her to play a game on my Blackberry.

By the fourth inning, the Phils were down 7 to 3, and my daughter was at the end of her rope.  Besides that, it was COOOOOLD.  And I was pretty sure we were on our way to our third loss of the season, so I agreed to take her out to the playground.

By the end of the fifth inning, the Phils were losing 9 to 3 and my husband and son decided they’d had enough and found us in the play area.  We aren’t usually ones to leave before the game is over, but all things considered, this was the time to make an exception.  Or so we thought.

We took our time driving back to my inlaws’.  We even made a pitstop for burgers at one of my husband’s favorite teenage haunts.  When we arrived at my inlaws’ house, the game was on, and guess what?  The Phils had somehow, miraculously it seemed, taken the lead in the seventh inning by scoring 8 runs.  EIGHT RUNS in one inning.  The score was 11-10.  We watched the rest of the game on TV and we won 12-11.  I can’t BELIEVE we missed it.

  1. I found your blog from your comments at Problogger. I am doing his 31 Day Challenge too. What’s ironic is my husband was born and raised in Chicago then his family moved to Philly when he was in high school. His parents still live there and we visit whenever possible. We were there last summer and got a look at the new ballpark (very nice!).

    Love your blog! Go Phillies!

  2. We are huge baseball fans here too. Looks like a fun family outing. But I hate that you missed the end. It’s hard with little ones…we haven’t attempted any sort of major league (aka expensive) sporting event yet.

    And GO RED SOX!

  3. I love the last picture. I can’t believe your daughter made it that long into the game.

I also can’t believe you missed that game ending. That really stinks! But like you said, at least you were home at a decent hour.

Good for the Phillies. I had no idea they were in such bad shape (I mean as a franchise). It makes me like them more. 🙂

  4. Wow. I’d almost be a bit aggravated for missing such a come back! LOL. But at least you got to “watch” the ending on tv.
Oh and by the way, what’s a friend onion? LOL.
    Hugs.

  5. Fun day! Kudos to your daughter for lasting that long. Great pics too. I hope you made it into some of them. Can’t wait for the tutorial on the watermark – hope it’s easy peasy.

  6. What a bummer! We would have left early too, considering the weather. We’re taking our kids to the Rangers next week, and are already planning on leaving early because it is a school night. So I hope they have a huge lead when we leave.

  7. It has been ages since I have followed baseball with any true enthusiasm in that I switched religions to Football – however, I feel your husband’s pain in regards to supporting a team that doesn’t visit the “win” column often.

Growing up I was an avid Cubs fan. I still remember with bitter disdain watching the Cubs lose to San Diego after winning they had won Pennant. First Cubs pennant since the late 1940’s and we thought it was our year. They lost in San Diego no less and the gut wrenching part was that the way the stadium was designed then, the visiting team had to exit the field through the home teams dugout.

That’s right, Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson and Shawn Dunston all had to sit in their dugout and wait for the celebratory scene play out before they were allowed to exit the field . . . heartbroken.

You would think I’d be over it by now! ;o)

  8. How cool that you got to watch the ring ceremony!

The Twins have had two of their first three games like that, with a game winning homerun in the 9th with two outs on Tuesday.

    I love baseball

  9. That looks like so much fun! Some of my best memories as a kid was going to Toronto Blue Jays games with my dad. Magic!

  10. How fun! The Royals are a pretty losingest team, too, so I can only imagine how fun this must have been for your city (and your hubby!). I’m glad your team won on their big day!

  11. Oh man I bet your hubs was goin’ crazy that y’all left early. But then he got over it I’m sure. Like you said, it was nice to get home early.

Can’t wait to hear about your Crayola adventure. That sounds like so much fun!

  12. ooo stinks you left early but atleast you got to watch the ending and get home at a good hour. Looks like you guys had a blast at the game!

  13. I’m a huge baseball fan and come from a long line of baseball fans – but I bet you already knew that! 🙂

    Go Phils!

  14. Even though you missed the win, it sounds like a pretty special family day. That’s so cool that you got to be there when they had the ring ceremony!

Any chance you stopped at Charlie’s for burgers? I remember we used to go there often with Young Life. I’m pretty sure that’s one of the old haunts that’s still around. My favorite thought, was the Village Porch, and it was a sad day for me when they closed down:(

  15. Hi, Jo-Lynne! I just wanted to let you know that I’m unable to see the photos in this post. The only one that is loading is the last one of your husband and daughter. Weird…

I’m currently using Safari as my browser if that helps.
