Pink Stripes in Philly

Greetings, friends, and welcome back to 22 Days of Spring Fashion! Today I’ve got a casual spring look we shot in Philly a few weeks ago, and I’m super excited to discover this morning that almost everything I’m wearing is on sale!

This was the day we took my daughter and a friend to the Franklin Institute, and the weather was mild but rainy. I wore this pink striped sweater with mid-wash skinnies and grey ballet flats. I love the muted color palette for spring.

This striped boatneck sweater has been one of my go-tos this spring. I love the color palette and the easy fit, and today it’s marked down to $26.99!!!

For size reference, I have the small, and it’s plenty roomy. It does “grow” a bit as you wear it, but not to the point that it loses its shape. I front-tucked it during these pictures, but it didn’t stay very well so I ended up just wearing it out.

I wore mid-wash jeans to compliment the pastel colors in the outfit. I like the 29″ inseam with ballet flats — most ankle jeans are 28″, but the extra inch really elongates the leg when wearing shoes with a lower vamp. Of course, everyone is different; this is just what I’ve found works best for my short-waisted 5’5″ frame.

My jeans are an old AG middi ankle style, but this Paige pair has similar in measurements. They’re also on sale, but unfortunately only smaller sizes are in stock. For reference, I take a 29 in Paige jeans.

For a less expensive pair, this 1822 Denim pair is a similar color and also has similar measurements, although I’m not familiar with the brand so I can’t vouch for the fit and how they wear.

I’ve talked about this tote before. I absolutely love this bag. It’s a great quality leather, nice and roomy, and it has the covered magnetic closure that I love — so much more convenient than the snap closures you have to lined up. It’s currently 30% off with code WORKIT.

I topped off the outfit with my silver trench. I like how it goes with the grey flats and plays off the blush and ivory in the sweater. Of course I don’t always worry about matching my coats to my outfits, but in this case, it worked perfectly!

This trench is a couple of years old, and it no longer comes in the silver, but it does come in a traditional khaki as well as black and navy, and it’s 40% off right now! It’s very comfortable, and it also has a removable liner for colder days.

I personally prefer the single breasted style to the more traditional double breasted; I feel it’s more flattering and less bulky.

We got caught in a downpour on the way back to our car, and I was really glad my trench coat has a hood! It’s removable, though, so if you don’t like the extra bulk, you can take it off.

My aviators with the matte gold frames and pink gradient lenses were the perfect compliment to the outfit, and I added a long pendant necklace along with my go-to pearl earrings and silver link bracelet.

This turned out to be a great outfit for touring the museum on a rainy spring day. I was comfortable but felt put together, the tote carries a lot without being terribly heavy, and the lightweight trench wasn’t too bulky to carry around when I got too warm to wear it.

  1. I like the new time for your Facebook Live events!  Tuesdays are much better for me!  I love this trench coat. I’ve been using my trench coats after going to the gym, for a nice “cover up” when running errands.  I smile every time I do it, and thank YOU for the idea!

  2. Glad the flight home was uneventful!  The only awards shows we watch are those for country music.  All of them have become so political instead of focusing on the movies, music, etc.  This is a very spring pallet outfit.  Have an awesome Monday!

  3. Glad you had a good trip and made it home safely.  This is a perfect spring outfit but I passed on this sweater because it wasn’t as soft as the stripped bell sleeve sweater from Loft you should us a few weeks ago.
Okay I have a question you might want to tackle in your newsletter. A few days ago my daughter and took some of her nicer clothes to a high end resale shop and while we were I found some AG jeans in my size. I was so excited to finally get to try some of these famous jeans on and they did not disappoint. They fit my boby like a glove except they weren’t petite and I had to fold them up more than usual. They were only $60 but I wasn’t sure what it would cost to have the hemline altered and my daughter didn’t think my idea of cutting them to make a distressed hem would be good, so I left them. I cam home to do some research because I wanted to know where they were made and how they get them to feel so good. Lol. With this all said, I found out that most of the items on the jeans are made in other countries but the jeans are designed in California and apparently there was some controversy about this, resulting in some law suits from people who thought the AG jeans were made in America.
It got me looking at the jeans in my closet and come to find out most of my favorite jeans were made in China and my Loft jeans were made in Indonesia. Finally the question…how do you feel about purchasing jeans and other items that aren’t made here? I promise this is not a political question. I just think that that majority of our clothes do come from outside the US and I hope that this isn’t hurting our economy or American jobs?  I honestly don’t give this any thought when I shop and I buy what I like based on quality and price but now I’m concerned that maybe I should start looking at where things are made but I have a feeling that American made clothes are way more expensive. Thoughts?

    1. Hey Gloria, I agree, it isn’t as soft as some. The other stripe one is really cute — I’m styling it for the blog later this week! We shot some pictures of it in Nashville. 🙂

I would totally go back and get those AG jeans!!! It should cost $10 to hem them if they cut the hem off and sew a new hem, or $20 to retain the original hem, which is what I usually do. They have a way of folding it and sewing so they still use the original hem at the bottom and it keeps any distressing or other details. That said, I think it is fine to just cut them. I know a lot of people who do that, since the raw hem is so trendy right now. Here’s how: https://www.bustle.com/articles/104745-how-to-cut-the-bottom-of-your-jeans-for-diy-frayed-perfection

As far as where jeans are made, I thought premium denim was usually made in USA, but that may be changing. I love the idea of buying American made, but it definitely costs more. If I hear something is made here in the U.S., it makes me more inclined to want to purchase and support the company, but it’s not something I seek out. I recommend checking out USA Love List (https://www.usalovelist.com/) and Mrs. American Made (https://www.mrsamericanmade.com/) if you want to find more USA-sourced clothing.

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne, thinking about ordering the sweater…I’m 5’3 and not sure if I should get petite or regular. I usually don’t buy petite shirts, but you’re mentioning it stretches out a bit as you wear it? I don’t want it to be too long, but not sure if the petite version would be too short?
Thanks for your help, love this outfit!

  5. Glad you had a great trip and found all well at home when you returned. I really like your outfit and the colors look perfect for spring. We did not watch the Oscars here either!

  6. Hi Jo-Lynne! I’m in the market for a trench coat and love this one but I have a question: what size are your wearing? I’m the same size as you but my arms are really long and I avoid ordering long-sleeve items because I always fear they will be too short for me. Thanks for all of your inspiration!!

  7. Your trench looks lavender on my iPad. I thought, what a lovely color and goes so well with the pink. I was a little disappointed to read further down that it was silver. Not that silver is not lovely but I feel in love with what I thought was lavender. This is an outfit that would be s go to during the spring. Comfy but still stylish.

I don’t watch the Oscars or any award show. There is just something about these Uber rich, famous people getting awards for their craft, that doesn’t sit well with me. I love seeing the dresses though and will check them out today.

  8. Love this combo of items you put together. The coat and shoes go really nicely with that sweater.

  9. Love the outfit and esp the trench. I love the silver and don’t think I have ever seen that color in a trench coat before. What a great neutral. I didn’t watch the oscars either. I find a waste of 3 plus hours. I see very few movies also. But do want to see Your Love is Amazing. Comes out in about a week I think. A spiritual movie.

  10. Just ordered the sweater. I’m loving that blush color in everything this spring. Picks me up after a long dreary winter. I’m planning a summer vacation to Maine. Any recommendations for towns to rent a house? 3 generations, teenaged kids.

    1. Ooooh, good question for the Asked and Answered series in my email newsletter! I will do a little research. I’m familiar with the area but not necessarily where good rentals are. Are you traveling as far north as Bar Harbor? That’s the region I’m most familiar with.

      1. My mother lives in Lisbon, Maine and we’re going up this summer, with plans to go to Bar Harbor for a couple of days. We’re thinking about getting an Airbnb. Any ideas for best places to stay, things to do, places to eat, with the hubby and two boys, ages 9 and 13? I’ve been to Bar Harbor only once when I was a teenager with my family, but I’ve been to Maine dozens of times. Thanks!

  11. I just wanted to tell you that I’m totally loving the new daily email/newsletter! I’ve been getting your emails for quite a while mainly because I would see people mention things here in the comments that I was sure I hadn’t read about in the post. 🙂 Until recently, I just skimmed them to see if there was any important news then deleted them and actually came to the blog from Feedly. Now that you’ve changed to the new format, I really look forward to reading them each day and seeing what tidbits you’ve included. I’m sure it’s a lot more work for you so I wanted to let you know that the extra effort is much appreciated!

  12. I didn’t watch the Oscars either, ha! I never watch awards shows, they’re boring in my opinion and the fashion is not really anything I’m that interested in, I prefer real life and real women. Now if there was a bloggers conference on tv I’d watch that, lol!
    xo,
    Kellyann

  13. I love everything about this outfit! I’ve pulled out my blush jeans and have been wearing them. This time of year I’m so tired of all the black and gray. You are not the only one who didn’t watch the Oscars, I didn’t watch. I did do a bit of surfing the web this morning looking at what was worn. The outfits is all I’m interested in!

  14. I did tune into the Oscars, but it didn’t take long before I was bored and soooo tired of the politics everyone tries to fit into their speeches etc.  It all seems so superficial to me too. They make racism etc. worse than if they’d just leave it alone.  Anyway, just my opinion.  I never have really liked the award shows and never end up watching any of them clear through to the end. I flipped the channel over to Hallmark and watched When Calls the Heart series.  It can be slow at times, but clean and refreshing. 🙂  The outfit you posted looks great.  I love how it looks still warm enough for Spring, but not the dark colors of Winter we all are so tired of. I think the transition from Winter to Spring is hard. I always look into my closet and can’t decide what to wear. I end up grabbing items not warm enough yet and then freeze out here in the NWest.  Glad you made it home safe.

  15.  Jolynne  i also didnt watch the oscar. I was watching when calls the heart. The only thing that i do know is that Rita Moreno wore the same dress to present as she did in 1962 when she won for westside story. (Thank you Twitter)
I love this outfit its great for this crazy weather we are having

  16. Love all the colors you are showing!
Purchased the spring striped sweater a few days
    Ago!
We are having woman’s spring retreat at our church this
Weekend and think that will be perfect to wear.

  17. I just bought the striped sweater this morning!  I had my birthday certificate in hand and was super happy to find it in my size.  I’ve been eyeing it ever since you posted it the first time.  🙂

  18. How comfortable do you find the Tory Burch Minnie flats?  I bought Tieks and I love the color, but I don’t love the comfort level as much as I had hoped.  I have a business trip in April, where we will be doing some daily walking and I’m wondering if the TB would be worth a try for that, what do you think?

    1. Hi! I tried the Tieks and didn’t care for them at all. They cut into the back of my heel where the elastic goes. I love my Minnie flats. I had a little bit of time to break them in – they pushed on my big toe on one foot (I have squarish feet, lol) but Nordstrom stretched them for me, which helped. I have 3 pairs. LOVE THEM.

  19. The Micheal Kors Trench is sold out from this post. Do you have any other suggestion for a great trench?

  20. Love the trench coat and have ordered it.  What do you do with the belt when you have your coat unbuttoned?
Thanks for all you do and love your new blog design

    1. Hey Susan, I tie them loosely in the back or let them hang, but honestly, I usually button up and tie in front. I left it open for this post so the outfit would show. 🙂
