Plaid Pants Two Ways

As August comes to an end, I can’t help but start thinking ahead to fall fashions. Never mind that we still have several weeks of heat and humidity to go here in Philly, I’m longing for sweater weather… maybe it’s because my kids are starting school on Monday, but I’m ready for those crisp fall days that come along with pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider donuts.

Why does it always come back to food in the fall? I don’t know, but count me in!

Today I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to share two transitional looks with these plaid pants from Wit & Wisdom. Yes, that’s right, I’m trading in my trademark denim for a pair of plaid twill pants.

I love these pants because they fit like my beloved legging jeans, but they read as pants, so you can wear them to work or church this fall and be perfectly within dress code regulations.

Okay, I obviously don’t work outside the home, so I can’t say for sure that these would fit every office environment, but I think they would be great for teachers and those workplaces with a more casual dress code.

I styled these pants two ways — first with a classic grey cashmere sweater, and then with a more budget-friendly pink dolman sleeve pullover.

This grey sweater is a bit splurgy, but I snagged it during the Anniversary Sale. I didn’t even notice it until the very end when another blogger styled it, and they still had my size so I snatched it up. It is soooo luxe and gorgeous — not to mention, super versatile. This is the kind of classic wardrobe piece you can wear for 10 years.

While the sweater is an investment, the pants are priced well under $100. That’s one reason why I do so much of my shopping at Nordstrom — it’s my one-stop high-low fashion destination for every occasion.

These pants have the patented Wit & Wisdom ‘Ab-solution’ power-mesh panels that mold and hold, including a waistband with interior control and booty-lift construction, and who doesn’t love that!?! I also like how the subtle plaid pattern and the pocket zippers add interest to the outfit.

For size reference, I’m wearing an 8 in these pants, and they feel a little big. I think a 6 might fit better, so you probably want to size down if in between.

For a more budget-friendly pairing, this pink dolman sleeve sweater is made of a nubby bouclé knit, and I’ve always been a fan of a dolman sleeve. I love the slouchy, laid back vibe and the way the ribbed texture across the top adds interest.

This sweater is really comfortable to wear, and you can dress it up or down. For size reference, I have the small, and it’s plenty roomy so you’ll want to size down if in between. Otherwise it’s true to size; I usually wear a small in the Caslon brand. While I love this pink cedar, it also comes in 4 other colors.

For this look, I swapped out the black mules for grey suede peep-toe booties, and I carried a silver shoulder bag.

I’ve shared this bag before, but I absolutely love it. The leather is like butter, and the inside is unlined — which in my opinion makes it seem more expensive. I also like how it has a divider to help keep things organized, and it’s got the perfect slouchy-yet-structured silhouette. You can configure the straps several different ways, but I love it the way it comes — for me, this is the perfect strap length.

These booties are extremely comfortable, and they make such a great transition shoe. They also come in black and taupe. It says they have a 4 1/4″ heel, but they don’t feel that high at all. They’re right on trend for fall with the perforated suede and ruching details, and I love how those features add texture to the outfit.

Y’all know me, I’m a sweater girl, but these pants can also be paired with a blouse, a tunic, or t-shirt and cardigan. I can also see adding a leather moto jacket to either of these outfits when it gets colder.

In addition to having something for everyone and every occasion, Nordstrom now offers several new buying options to make your life easier. You can BOPUS (buy online, pick up in-store) or ROTUS (reserve online, try on in store) and they also offer curbside pickup so you don’t even have to get out of your car! I’ve used that option quite a few times, and it’s absolutely fantastic. You just text them when you’re nearby and then again when you pull up, and they bring your bags right out to you.

If you prefer typical online ordering, shipping and returns are free, and basic alterations are also free for many full-price items purchased at Nordstrom and Trunk Club. Just bring your receipt or packing slip in with you, and they’ll determine what’s needed during your fitting and let you know if any charges apply.

  1. they look too tight, too long, and the back pockets are a disaster. I know they are free to you but really!? Ick, just say NO!

    1. Wow!!! If you can’t say anything nice, don’t comment.  Everything you said is not true.  She looks great in them and I think the pockets make the pants. They fit great.  I plan to buy them after trying them at the store for the right size.  Jo-Lynne, ignore her comment.

  2. As a lover of plaid, I am SO happy to see these pants! So stylish and W & W too! I didn’t know these existed. Thanks for sharing JoLynne! As a teacher, these will work well for my fall/winter wardrobe. Definitely purchasing.

  3. I love those plaid pants and if I were still working in an office I would totally buy them. I have been wanting the Wit and Wisdom dark wash jean petite jeans but they are sold out in my size. II am not giving up and I keep checking for a restock. I ordered those VC booties but unfortunately returned them, as I thought the 4 inch heel was steep and also thought the ankle strap was too wide. I was hoping to be able to see how they fit you but the pants were covering your ankles? They are so beautiful and I so wanted to love them and needed a new fall bootie so I was very sad to part ways with them. Glad you think they are comfortable.

    1. I’ll style them again when they show. I actually think they’re incredibly comfortable. Also, my designer showed up on Thursday to help with the curtain installation, and she was wearing them with cropped jeans, a cute white peplum tee, and a turquoise necklace. Looked so cute for a transition outfit while it’s still warm here.

  4. You mean there’s more to fall than pumpkin spice & donuts??  LOL!  Who knew!!   Today’s outfit – stunning!   Didn’t even know plaid skinnies were out there.  The whole look is very classy.  Isn’t it funny how you adjust so fast to the normal once one of the kids go off to college?  My husband was REALLY sad about our oldest daughter going off to college as they were super close.  And like you, the goodbye didn’t happen quite as I had pictured it.  It’s was so chaotic at Penn State Main, we were rushed through the whole process, we barely got a hug & kiss in before we had to move our vehicle!  But when she came home for Christmas vacation, it was such an upheaval from the routine we got used to that my husband actually uttered the words “when is she going back”?  LOL!  Enjoy the day!

  5. I can’t believe you are wearing skinnies that are not denim! You look very nice! I do have to say that I noticed that the plaid does not match on the side seams. Sorry, but that’s my Home Economics education at work. I’m glad that you are doing good with David being away. We are getting a little taste of Fall, and I’m loving it. Have an awesome day!

  6. Ordered!  These pants are adorable for fall/winter.  Very versatile.   I really like when you show us more options besides jeans.  I volunteer weekly in an office, and while I do not have a dress code I feel like I should dress a little “nicer” than I normally do.   These look like great  pants to wear with ankle boots and dinner nite-out too.  Have a great weekend.  My daughter is starting her second year off at college.  Everything you write about your son was me last year at this time!  It gets better.

  7. So cute on you. I’m such a basic dresser that I’d have to think about them but love them on you. Maybe by Nov I’ll be ready. Ha

  8. Cute pants and outfits! I would never have tried on plaid pants, but I like them. Thanks to you I am now a Nordstrom card holder and I am happy so far!

  9. Love the plaid!  And seeing it styled a couple of different ways is helpful.  It does make me feel as if Fall is on the way.  I love Summer weather, but Fall clothes are so much fun!  Looking forward to your month of Fall Fashions with Cyndi.  And more of your house updates!

  10. Very cute plaid pants! I have a pair from two years ago, that I wear with tall boots and a sweater in the winter. To me, they read more of a skinny than a pant.  All the comfort of a legging in a pant look. A win/win! 😉
Will your son come home for the weekend? Not sure if he’s the huggy type but I know you’ll have one for him.

    1. Not a huggy type at all, but he did give me one when we saw him after his band performance. He was also more talkative than usual and seemed really happy, so I’m happy!

  11. oh, I love to hear these are Wit and Wisdom! I bought 3 pair of their jeans last year and I love them. These look fantastic on you! I love the plaid and the zips. I may just check those out. Love cashmere!! I hope to add a sweater to my closet this year.. and this soft grey is perfect on you!

    1. Jessica…..do you find the knees of Wit and Wisdoms jeans are big and stretch out more while wearing?  I only have one pair from 2 yrs. ago and from day one the knees bag. I LOVE the waist of Wit and Wisdom, so want to try another pair. Mine are light wash, so not sure if dark would hold shape more?

        1. Jessica…..Thank you.  Yes, all this helps.  I’m not sure if mine are sized down, will have to look and I will try the darker wash.  I just love the waist in them.  🙂  Thanks again for replying.

  12. This is such a cute outfit!  I love the pants, and like it styled with the gray sweater.  You mentioned pairing these pants with a Moto jacket, and I think that would look great.  By the way, the gray sweater looks SO MUCH BETTER ON YOU than on the model in the Nordstrom photo.  On their website, I wouldn’t have looked twice at the sweater.

  13. You look so chic, JoLynne! I love both looks, and have the pants in my shopping cart as I write. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to pull the trigger on the grey sweater…… it is a classic…. it can be worn for years…. it is gorgeous….. I’ve gotta go!! 😉

  14. That grey sweater is gorgeous! Love it with the plaid pants! Fun to see you in something other than jeans.

  15. Really cute look and I like the departure from jeans.  I love jeans, but it is fun to see something different sometimes.  That grey sweater is gorgeous.  Beautiful booties, too.  And bag, haha, I’m going through the whole post!!  Liked it all!

  16. LOVE these plaid pants. I have to go try them on now. I don’t know if I need regular or petite.  You look great in them.  I think you should for sure keep them. I like them best with the grey sweater but both look nice.  They really read as a neutral so could be worn with several colored tops.  I like what one lady said…..white blouse would be great too.  I just now am starting to yearn for FALL days.  I LOVE Fall and Fall fashion.  Looking forward your Fall series with Cyndi to come.

  17. Ooh, I love the pants! That side zipper detail gives them a ltlle something special. The first look with the gray sweater is my favorite. I could totally wear these in my office.
