Please Pass the Water

Do you ever feel like you get so caught up in the things of the world, the stuff, ride of life, that you forget that it’s not the point?

This morning as I sat in church, my mind whirling with deadlines and ideas, I sent up a desperate prayer asking my heavenly Father to show me how to not love this world so much.

As soon as I sent the prayer heavenward, I knew the answer.  It’s so simple, really.  If I fill my cup with Coke, there is no room for water.

Coke doesn’t quench my thirst.  But because it tastes good, I go for the Coke.  And the more I have, the more I want.  And the next thing I know, I’ve gone all day without a glass of water.

And I’m left feeling sick and dehydrated and unsatisfied.

What I need is a tall glass of refreshing ice water.  When I REALLY need is to make water my primary drink.  Of course there’s nothing wrong with the occasional glass of Coke.  But what I find is, when my thirst is quenched by the water, I really don’t even want the Coke so much.

And so it is with life.  Jesus said unto them, "I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will
never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst."
~ John 6:35

  1. That’s an excellent analogy. I wonder what side of the line blogging sits on. I’m thinking it’s coke. Cuz it’s definitely what I do when I should be studying scripture.

  2. Have you been talking to my Mom? Confession: it may have been a week+ since I’ve had water.

Coming from mom, it’s a nag. From you, and with the imagery and analogy? Think I need a two-way overhaul…

Thank you for being a messenger. 🙂

  3. I tagged you for a book meme over on my blog. Hope you can find some time to check it out. Hope you had a great weekend and by the way, you looked awesome on your big day in the city.

  4. I love your analogy, Jo-Lynne! So true. Since I have been drinking water to quench my thirst, I find myself wanting MORE water, as well 😉

  5. How fitting that I find your blog after linking here from another blog…all while looking for a dt. coke image to document my transition from coke to dt. coke. I guess it was really too much to ask of myself to transistion to water…LOL…but I figure I’m half way there ???

  6. So true. I just posted about this the other day…except my vice was break&bake cookies. The more I eat them, the more I think it should be a normal staple in my house. The only way to crave the good things is to actually, you know, start devouring the good things!

    Great post!
