Polka Dot Blouse for Spring

Greetings and happy Thursday! I can’t believe I’m wrapping up 22 Days of Spring Fashion tomorrow!

Today I’m styling a polka dot blouse with white jeans and black strappy sandals for a spring outfit I would wear to church or out to lunch with friends.

This polka dot blouse is so versatile. I decided to style it for an edgier, casual look for this post, but it’s also a nice work wear piece if you work in a professional environment.

This top comes in three color combinations, and had a hard time choosing between them.

I chose the black with white dots because I was worried the other two might be see-through, and I didn’t want to have to wear a cami underneath. I really love how the black with white dots pairs with white jeans, but I think it would also look nice with black jeans or pants, or even a colored pant.

It’s definitely a flowy top, but it does have some structure through the waist, and the rounded hemline also adds the illusion of curves.

I’d kind of like to have it tailored so it nips in a bit more through the waist… I may take it into Nordstrom and see if they can do that for me. I love the free alterations that come with my Nordstrom card!

For size reference, this top is a small. I’d say it runs true to size, but if in between, size down.

I paired it with white jeans for a fresh summer look, and these are a new brand to me.

I’ve been wanting to try Topshop jeans so I finally ordered a pair, and I have to say, I really like the fit and the quality for the price.

They have a flattering fit, and I like how thick they are; they definitely are not see-through. I wore them for about an hour, and they didn’t bag out, but I can’t say how they will look at the end of the day. They get good reviews, though, and I also like the higher waist.

For size reference, I ordered the 30W x 30L because the website says they fit like 28-29 waist. They’re ankle length, so I’m not sure what the 30″L is all about, but anyway. I would recommend sizing up one from your normal larger size. I typically wear a 28 or 29 in jeans, for reference.

If you’re on the hunt for good white jeans, stay tuned for my updated White Jeans Review… I’ve ordered and tried on quite a few already, and I need to go to the mall and try on some more before I’m ready to share that post, but it should be up within the next couple of weeks!

I debated wearing my black pumps with this look, and they would definitely be more appropriate for a work wear look, but I decided to go ahead and wear these sandals instead.

(Also, I’m wearing pumps in tomorrow’s post, and I really try to maintain a variety in my outfits for these style challenges… the onslaught of skinny jeans notwithstanding. Haha!)

These shoes are pricey, but I managed to snag them during the Bloomingdale’s spend more/save more event a few weeks ago. They’re incredibly comfortable for heels, and I love the quality as well. I have several pairs of Stuart Weitzman shoes I’ve collected over the years, and they last forever.

For a similar style that’s more budget-friendly, check out this Nine West pair. For a lower heel, this Steve Madden pair is really good; I had them in pink last year.

Because it’s still so cold here right now, I wanted to show this look with a jacket. I have an ivory 3/4-sleeve blazer that is perfect over this top, but the jeans are a stark white and they didn’t play well together, so I’ll save the ivory blazer to wear with this top and black or colored pants.

For this look, I threw on my trusty black leather jacket.

This is what I would throw on with this outfit if I was going out to dinner with girlfriends or my husband.

Unfortunately mine is sold out, but I doubt anyone is in the market for a leather jacket right now. If you have one you love, though, don’t hesitate to wear it right through the spring months. It also works great over a dress if you want an edgier look — just throw it over your shoulders for a trendy vibe.

I know, there are way too many pictures in this post, but I spent a lot of time editing them, and then realized I had too many, so you’re going to see them all. Ha!

Here’s a close-up of my jewelry. It’s kind of hard to see the earrings, but they’re faux pearl drop earring with silver hardware from Lucky Brand. I added a silver circle pendant to fill the v-neckline, and then I wore my favorite silver link bracelet and a two-tone watch.

Finally, I added a red bag for a pop of color. Yes, it bothers me that my jewelry is silver and the bag has gold hardware, but I didn’t want to take the time to switch out my jewelry to work with the bag.

Ideally, it’s nice if all the metals in your accessories match, but it really isn’t necessary. Plus my watch has both gold and silver, so it sort of ties it all together. This bag is old, but I linked up some similar ones below, or you can always search eBay — it’s the Ivy Cross-Body in Samba.

Here’s a final look. It’s trite, but it’s true: you really can’t go wrong with a black and white outfit. I like how the black sandals bookend the outfit, while the red bag provides a fun pop of color.

What would really be cool is if I wore red earrings with this. I guess I need to invest in a pair!

  1. What about wearing your blush moto jacket over instead of the leather? It looks heavy for spring-even if it is still cold out there

    1. I like the look of the black leather. 🙂 I was at a fashion blogging conference in Texas in April a couple years ago, and a ton of girls were wearing black leather jackets draped over white dresses. That said, it’s more of an edgy look, and it’s not for everyone. There are certainly other options — the suede moto is definitely a possibility.

  2. I’m seeing polka dots lots this year .Love how you added the jacket. A black leather jacket is on my radar for fall. Have a wonderful Easter:)

  3. I have those shoes in a neutral color. I love the comfort, elegance, and versatility. I have a question. I have a semi formal event tonight (cocktail attire they said). I bought a dress for a graduation and want to know if it would be appropriate. It’s silk, sleeveless, hem is just below knees, springy floral print, fit and flare cut, sweetheart neckline. I’m wondering if it’s too “daytime” for evening event.

    1. I love the nude ones too… I have the Nudistsong in that color, tho, so I was trying not to indulge in these too, but I figured I could justify the black. Haha!

As for your event, I’d have to see the dress, and I’d have to know more about the event. Some events say “cocktail attire” and you find that pretty much anything goes if it’s a dress. But I’ve also been to an event that said Semi Formal, and I wore a printed shift dress, thinking it wouldn’t matter, and I looked incredibly out of place. It was dreadful. EVERYONE was wearing cocktail attire or formalwear. I’ll never make that mistake again.

So I’d say, if you don’t know your audience, err on the side of going dressier. Break out a LBD to be safe. If you are sure you’ll see some of everything, your floral dress is probably fine.

    1. Yes! You do pay for them, but you are reimbursed in Nordstrom Notes… they changed that a few years back. It used to be certain alterations were free, and then beyond those you had to pay. Now they have it set up so you get reimbursed in Nordstrom Notes… up to $100 for Level 1, up to $200 for Level 2, up to $300 for Level 3, and unlimited for Level 4. And this only applies to Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack purchases, FYI. Still, it’s a GREAT benefit!!! I use it all the time.

Here are all the benefits for each level: https://rstyle.me/n/c2hqkjgthw

  4. I really love this blouse on you! The black is great, but I really love the wild rose color too (but you’re right, it does look a little sheer in the pic). I have a sleeveless navy one that I haven’t worn in a long time, but I can’t seem to part with it for some reason.

  5. Wow what a nice job you did with this outfit. I normally don’t like polka dots because it reminds me of the business attire tops I use to wear with suits. But I really like how you paired it with the white jeans and those cute trendy sandals.  I could see myself wearing this to my part time job which is a more casual environment. I will definitely look for a similar top today. I’m heading to Marshalls to do some Easter and spring shopping 😊

  6. Very pretty outfit Jo-Lynne!  I hope that when you post the white jeans information, you will share a pair of high rise straight legged white jeans.  I have figured out that for some reason,  I don’t like white skinny jeans, but I like my denim skinny jeans.  Go figure!  When I was shopping for the Olay Whipped Facial Cream, the store I was in did not have it.  Since I needed it, I ended up buying the Olay Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream, that you apply morning and night.  I have been using it for a while, and I can honestly say that the dark spots on my face have gotten lighter, to the point that using concealer is not necessary when I am wearing foundation.  Yay!
    Have a blessed Thursday!

  7. Love this look on you!  I’m looking forward to an updated white jean review. I’d also love to see a similar post on shorts, non-denim. I share your problem with so many of them flaring out in the thigh area. Shorts shopping, for me, is almost as bad as bathing suit shopping. 🙄

  8. Jo-Lynne, A quick question…..is it appropriate to wear Merlot/burgundy jeans through the Spring season? When should you stop wearing them? Many thanks!!

    1. I would say there are no dos and don’ts for colors anymore. You can definitely wear them, but I’d try to make them look more spring-like by pairing them with lighter weight tops and sandals or ballet flats rather than boots.

  9. I just got some red “Kendra Scott” earrings for some pop just like you were saying! I did the bauble bar and had the red stone put in with gold! i also am loving the new white/black combo from Stella and Dot….they have ones with a white flower and black bead drop that would look so cute with this outfit too! I tend to be a bit too matchy matchy at times but it makes me happy 😉 Love following your posts

  10. That outfit is so cute.  Love polka dots!  I’m looking forward to your white jeans review.  I just purchased a pair of white jeans for the first time and need some ideas.  I live in blue denim jeans, so this will be a change for me.

  11. You are totally rocking this whole look. I like the “V” neck. I have a short waist and I think V-necks are the most flattering. Love the shoes. Love the pop of color purse. Glad you didn’t match the earrings to the handbag — I think it’s looks more sophisticated the way you have it styled. I have a red leather LV purse and myriad red pumps/shoes/boots, and I found I don’t wear those as much (the shoes, NOT the purse lol) ‘cuz I don’t like matchy-matchy. I also think this whole look (except for the purse) would look good with those hot pink cigarette pants you were wearing last week.

BTW, have to give you major props for your blogs — you don’t just slap a top on, write a sentence and call it a day…I feel a lot of bloggers lately are getting kind of lazy with their posts (I know it’s a lot of work, so don’t blame them). I like your close up shots and also noting what you DON’T like about the outfit. Appreicate that you don’t always take pics when you’re looking “camera ready”. Great job!

  12. Looking forward to the updated white Jean review!  Wondering if you can also review white Jean capris?? Looking for a pair to take on a cruise!! Thank you!

  13. Very cute on you.  I love how you did black sandal with white jeans. I just purchased a navy/white short sleeve polka dot blouse from LOFT and it came today. 🙂  LOVE polka dot.  I wish I had mint jeans to wear it with.  Any ideas where to find some?  I know they were out big a few years ago though, so maybe not in still.  I believe the blouse was $56 but I got it for $22 something. 🙂  Great deal.
