Stripe Poncho + Sheath Dress

Today I’m styling a classic sheath dress that I picked up last week at LOFT. I thought this was a great transition dress for fall because it can stand alone, and it also makes a lovely base layer for a variety of jackets and ponchos.

Starting this morning at 10AM EST, all dresses and skirts at LOFT are $25 off (no coupon needed.) The promotion ends tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 11:59 PM EST. They have tons of cute dresses right now that you can wear now but will also transition well to fall.

This is the paneled sheath dress in Robin Red.

I also picked up this black gathered dress, which I actually wore to church yesterday. You can see it on my Instagram. And I’m debating this side shirred sheath in Aubergine. It has the same styling possibilities as the paneled sheath but it looks like it might be more comfortable.

This dress is fine on its own, and you could definitely bling it up with some great accessories, but I thought it was the perfect color to layer under this fringed stripe poncho from Nordstrom. This poncho is one size fits all, and I think it’s probably best on those of us 5’5″ and over. It would probably dwarf a petite woman.

I wore these Vince Camuto peep toe booties. These are super comfortable inside, but the heel feels quite high to walk in. I also think I could have sized down a half size.

I also have these BCBG peep toe booties, which I think would be cute with this outfit for a dressier look. And of course, you could wear pumps or knee-high boots.

I accessorized with silver, mainly because my handbag had silver hardware. The stripe poncho is the statement piece so I didn’t want my jewelry to compete.

I wore a simple pendant to break up the front, then I added a couple of my classic D Yurman pieces — the mixed metal link ring and the oval link bracelet. These were Christmas gifts from my husband over the years. The earrings are old, but I like the chunky hoops with the heavy poncho.

This open poncho has no arm holes, so you just throw it on over the dress. It stays in place fairly well, but I can see taking it off while you’re at work unless you’re chilly. Then, of course, you can wrap yourself up in it like a blanket!

The bag is my R Minkoff Moto Hobo. This was my big fall purchase last year (I got it on a great sale) and it has served me well. I carried it a ton over the fall and winter months, and I’m so glad they’ve brought it back for another another season. It’s a great size, and it has an edgy vibe that I enjoy. Of course, being black, it goes with so much.

I can see wearing this outfit to the office (if I had an office, that is, ha!) or out to lunch with friends or to church on Sunday.

I have to admit, I always feel a bit matronly when I wear one of these blanket ponchos. My instinct is always to pair it with jeans and a t-shirt for a more casual look, but I get a lot of requests for more dresses and work wear looks, so I thought I’d give this a try. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

In other news, I put up some more of my summer clothes on my Shop Jo-Lynne’s Closet Instagram yesterday. If you don’t know how that works, it’s pretty simple. If you see something you want to purchase, leave a comment with your paypal email address, and I’ll send an invoice within 24 hours. I appreciate payment within 48 hours of receiving the invoice. Otherwise, I’ll move on down the list.

If you’re not on Instagram, but you see something you want, just email me. I believe you can still see what I’ve listed on the website even if you’re not signed into an Instagram account. Also, my prices include US shipping, but if you’re in another country and want to purchase something, just say so in your comment, and we can figure out the extra cost.

So today I am supposed to start Whole 30, but did I get to the store to stock up on the food I’ll need? Of course not. After church, we dropped my youngest off at sleepover camp. Then after I put my stuff up on Instagram for the closet sale, I ended up hanging out with friends in the neighborhood. It was fun, and a great way to end the weekend, but it did nothing to get me started off on the right foot with Whole 30.

I’m planning to go to the store today, and hopefully we can get going on this asap. I went running this morning, so I’m already feeling energetic and like I’ve got this.

Have a great Monday!

  1. I love this post. I wish I was tall like you. I will hop over to Loft and get this dress Love it!!! Thanks

  2. great look — i love those booties ! have you ever worn a swing dress ? i know you’ve said you like the more fitted dresses – but i’d love to see you in a swing dress, i think it would look FAB 🙂

  3. I was honestly going to say you look like a model in this outfit. You definitely do! Then I read where you thought you might look matronly?!?!?!? No way!! You look amazing! I love everything about this look.

  4. I love ponchos because here on Texas we have little need for a real cost, but, man, it makes me hot just looking at it today. It will be forever before we can wear fall clothes. And those ponchos without arm holes are hard to keep from sliding around sometimes.

You are SO critical of yourself, and truly you do not see what everyone else does much of the time. “Matronly” is not a word you are in danger of having used about you.

  5. Thank you for sharing a dress with booties look. I love booties, but am hesitant to wear them with a dress or skirt. I’d love to see a post on wearing booties– I struggle with pant length/width with them, too.
