President’s Weekend Try-On Haul: Denim, Shoes, Dresses & Tops

Greetings, friends! I’m back with another try-on haul today, and there are so many good sales this weekend, so it’s a great time to start thinking about your spring wardrobe or buy ahead for next winter, if you like to do that.

Most of what I’m trying today is from Nordstrom, Loft, and J.Crew. I’ve got jeans, sandals, basic white t-shirts, and a few dresses! Also, if you missed it, most of what I shared in last week’s Try On Haul is on sale this weekend. So much good stuff in there.

Try On Haul: LOFT

Loft killing it with their pre-spring styles, and I found a bunch of really cute tops. I just made up “pre-spring” but that seems to be what it is. Let’s get started!

SALE ALERT >> Take 40% off full price styles at Loft with code XOXO

LOFT Ruffle Split Neck Blouse // In one word: obsessed. I love this blouse. You just slip it on, and it’s soft and flowy and has a beautiful drape. I love the ruffle detail, and I’m not a ruffle girl, but somehow this just works. It’s just so comfortable and easy to wear. Love, love, love. Wearing a size small, for reference.

LOFT Floral Mixed Media Split Neck Shell // Sorry for so many pictures, but I think it’s helpful to show these untucked and half-tucked. This floral top is so so so cute. Soft and flowy and easy to throw on alone or layer a jacket on top if you desire. I’m so glad Loft has started doing this style top with less material. The ones I’ve tried before were so long and voluminous. This is perfect. I actually think it looks good both tucked and untucked. Wearing a small, for reference.

LOFT Geo Mixed Media Split Neck Shell // This top is similar to the pink floral top above, but it’s not the same. This one is little bit longer and there’s more material, but not so much that it’s unflattering. I love the print on this one, probably even more than the pink, although I love both and plan to keep both. Wearing a small, for reference.

LOFT Daisy Bloom Wrap Blouse // Probably my least favorite of the Loft tops I ordered, this is still really cute, and it’s the perfect wear now-and-later piece because of the long sleeves. I don’t know, I just feel it’s a little “fluffy” on me for some reason. I had one very similar in springtime that I liked more and I’m not sure why because they’re cut exactly the same. I did size up in this one — wearing a medium — because I remembered that the one in spring felt a tad snug. But perhaps the smaller size is better?

LOFT Leopard Print Ruffle Tie Neck Top // In case you haven’t heard, animal print is hotter than ever this spring, and this top is a little different in that it’s more of a peasant style. It definitely needs a half-tuck, in my opinion, but it’s cute when you style it that way. Also love it with the black leather jacket on top!

Try On Haul: Spring Shoes

In anticipation of my spring style series starting on March 1st, I’ve been ordering spring shoes to try out. I’ve had a lot of misses but some resounding hits!

Tory Burch Women’s Ravello Platform Sandals // I wanted to love these, but they sit up a little high on my foot, plus they felt very unstable to walk in. I can see myself twisting my ankle in the first wear, and girlfriend can walk in a platform wedge, but something about these just seems like an accident waiting to happen. It’s a shame because they’re GORGEOUS. Also available at Bloomingdale’s, and they’re true to size. I’m wearing the 8.

TORY BURCH Ines Slide Sandal // You may remember in last week’s Try On Haul, I tried the wedge version of this shoe. I couldn’t keep them on my feet, so I sent them back and ordered these flats. Now THESE I love. They’re slightly loose but they do stay on my feet. (I have very flat, bony feet, and even though they’re not narrow, I have a hard time keeping shoes without straps on my feet.) Anyway, these are pretty good!

And they’re beautiful. They come in a ton of colors, but I thought the black might be useful to have… I’m still undecided though. I may exchange them for the tan or cream. I need to see what color I end up needing when I start styling spring clothes. They have a cushioned footbed and they feel good on. Definitely a nice alternative to the Miller sandal that has become so ubiquitous. (Not that I plan to stop wearing my Miller sandals… I still love them!) They’re true to size; I’m wearing the 8.

Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal // These slides are a great alternative to the Tory Burch Ines, and they’re just as comfortable. They also have a padded footbed, but they are a little bigger on my foot. I can still walk in them, but if you have wider or thicker feet, these might fit you better. They also come in a ton of colors, and they’re true to size. I’m wearing the 8.

Vince Camuto Slingback Platform Sandals // I love, love, love these. They are suuuuuper comfortable for a heel. The platform and block heel give them great stability, and the suede is soft against the feet. They don’t rub anywhere, and they’re secure on my foot. The second I slipped my feet inside, I was so excited because I was striking out on all the other heeled sandals I’d ordered. These are currently on sale for $129, and they’re also at Bloomingdale’s if you prefer to shop there. This taupe is gorgeous for spring, but they also come in black. These are true to size; I’m wearing the 8.

Something Navy Lily Flat // These were a pleasant surprise! I didn’t think they looked very comfortable, and at that price, shoes can tend to go either way. They’re super comfortable right out of the box, and they are just so super cute. I love the cheetah print as an alternative to leopard, and the will jazz up any basic outfit — I can see wearing them with an all black outfit, a black and white outfit, and any colored top and jeans. So good! Also true to size; wearing the 8.

Try On Haul: White Tees

I get so frustrated with white t-shirts, and it’s the main reason I don’t wear more cardigans — I can’t find a good base layer to wear under them! Either they have a stupid pocket on the boob (what guy came up with that design?) or they have a curved hem or they neckline is awkward or they’re too thin or too tight or too baggy or too long. There’s always something. How hard can it be???

Well.

I wandered into J.Crew last weekend and spotted this white v-neck tee on a display table, and I swear I heard angels singing.

Lookit. No boob pocket. Straight hemline. Wide, deep, flattering v-neck. Trendy slub cotton. I. am. in. LOVE.

SALE ALERT >> Take 40% off your J.Crew order with code YESPLEASE

My daughter and I each bought one, and I paid full price, and I consider it totally worth it. BUT it is now 40% off, and I’m ordering another white one to have as backup, and a grey one too.

Yes, it is a tad thin, but I will still wear it without a cami underneath.

J.Crew Vintage cotton V-neck T-shirt // Well, I guess I said enough about this tee already, but I will add that I sized up to a medium. I expect it to shrink, and the small just barely fit.

J.Crew Supersoft Supima Raw-Edge V-neck T-shirt // Okay, you guys. As if it wasn’t enough for J.Crew to bring out (or bring back, whatever) their Vintage cotton V-neck T-shirt, they also brought out this raw-edge v-neck tee that is really every bit as good and maybe better if you’re sensitive about things being see-through.

This one is made of more of a pima cotton, which can be matronly, but not the way they did it. It’s soft and smooth but still looks cool, and the raw edge neckline is a great detail that elevates it above a basic tee. The fit is pretty much the same as the one above, and I also sized up to a medium in this one.

And wait! It gets even better!

J.Crew Supersoft Supima raw-edge V-neck tank top // Yep, they did it in a tank as well. I much prefer a tank under cardigan sweaters because there are no sleeves to get bunched up underneath it.

This one has a nice, relaxed fit but it still skims the body in a flattering way. You don’t want to wear voluminous tops under cardigans because you lose your shape, but when they’re too tight, you have to worry about the lumps and bumps. This one is the perfect compromise.

It’s final sale, but just $13.19!!! I just ordered the navy.

LOFT V-Neck Tee // Finally, this loft v-neck tee is actually really good too, but I like the J.Crew options just a little bit more. This one is just a little bit longer, and the v-neckline isn’t quite as pretty as the other two. But it checks the two most important boxes — straight hem and no boob pocket. Definitely a solid choice, especially if you like your tees a little longer.

Try On Haul: Denim

I found a few more denim styles to share. I really wish I had time to round up the ones from the last couple of weeks as well, for comparison purposes, but that won’t be happening today. I ended up trying a bunch on again yesterday, trying to decide which ones to keep and which to return, and it’s definitely helpful to see them all together. You can see a bunch in last week’s try-on haul, and there were some the week before as well.

Mott & Bow Mid-Rise Skinnies // These jeans were sent to me to try from Mott & Bow — a New York City-based denim brand that seeks to make handcrafted jeans at a fair price. These retail for $118. The fit is really good, and they’re very stretchy and soft and comfortable. For reference, I’m wearing the 29, but I think I could wear the 28. They come in other washes, and I’d be curious to try another one. This one is a little plain for my tastes. It is the one I picked out, though, so the onus is on me!

Mott & Bow Cashmere Raglan Crew // They also sent me this gorgeous cashmere sweater, and this sweater is so luxe and soft. Totally in love and didn’t want to take it off. It’s a medium, for reference.

Sam Edelman Laurna Mule // I finally got these in the right size — these are the 7.5 — and I love them. They’re definitely walkable, they have a cushioned footbed, and the quality of the leather is nice. Size down half, for sure!

AG Ex-Boyfriend Ankle Slim Jeans // I thought these might be a good alternative to the straight cropped jeans I’ve been experimenting with, but I don’t love them. I also tried cuffing them with sandals (see below.)

AG Ex-Boyfriend Ankle Slim Jeans // That’s definitely an improvement, but I’m still not loving them. I like the Mother Tomcat High-Rise Straight-Leg Ankle Jeans from last week better, I believe.

also wearing: Soludos Slotted Thong Sandals (see last week’s try-ons for more info!)

Rag & Bone Raw Hem Ankle Skinny Jeans // I shared these last week, and I was wearing the 29. I love the wash, the cut, the length, the rear pocket placement — everything except they were sliding down as I wore them. So I re-ordered them in the size 28, and they definitely fit better! They’re verrrry snug, but they don’t look bad, and they’re stretchy so they’re still comfortable. It definitely helps them not slide down as much. Unfortunately they’re not on sale and very pricey.

Try On Haul: Dresses

Home stretch, you guys! I ordered a bunch of floral dresses, thinking of spring weddings and other events y’all might have coming up. This is NOT my typical style, but it’s the trend du jour, so I thought I’d give it a fair shake.

French Connection Linosa Floral Print Faux Wrap Maxi Dress // This dress is nice — fully lined, and it slides on easily. I love the faux wrap. It also has a huge side slit that you can’t really see in these pictures. The material is pretty. I don’t feel like it is super flattering on me, but I don’t hate it either. I’m wearing the 8, for reference.

Eliza J Floral Print Chiffon Halter Dress // The fabric on this dress is really pretty, but I don’t know about the high-low hem. It also requires a strapless bra, which is a strike against it, but not a deal breaker. I’m wearing the 8 and it just barely fits. It’s a little snug. If you have a spring wedding to attend, it’s worth a try!

Row A Floral Print Maxi Dress // This dress isn’t as high quality as the others, and the material isn’t as nice, but it’s still very pretty. It would be nice for Easter Sunday or a baptism/dedication service or even a more casual wedding. I’m wearing a medium, and it’s a tad snug.

Eliza J Ruffle Hem Faux Wrap Dress // This one is a big, fat no, but I thought I’d share it anyway. If you’re not as buxom on top, you might like it. It’s a very pretty print. I’m wearing the 8, for reference.

Try On Haul: Spring Jacket

BLANKNYC Drape Front Faux Suede Jacket // I hated to end on a low note so I saved my favorite for last. I ordered two drape front suede jackets, but I only have pictures of this one. Both are the same design, just different material. (This heathered grey is really pretty too.)

I wanted a completer piece for spring to wear with jeans and tees and camis — something trendy with an edge to it, but lighter weight than my leather and suede moto jackets. This one fits the bill perfectly! It’s very soft and drapey — unlined, which I find rather weird, but it sort of has to be that way to keep the drape.

Since it’s too soon to start wearing sandals, I also tried styling it with booties…

This outfit is definitely coming with me to Scottsdale! For reference, I’m wearing the medium, and it’s the perfect fit.

Okay, that’s a wrap! Sorry I don’t have more details on other items I’m wearing — time is of the essence this morning because I’m meeting a friend for coffee, and I’ve already had to skip my run. If you have questions, leave them in the comments, and I’ll try to get back to them this afternoon!

  1. I just love your try-on-hauls! And appreciate that you show both the hits and misses 🙂 Do you happen to have a link to the long necklace in your last outfit?

  2. Wow! That was a lot to look at! Will have to come back to it later today. I have several of the split neck shells from loft over the years and I always wear them a lot under a light cardigan, etc.. they dress up jeans a bit. The shorter dresses are nice on you. Thanks for all the info!

  3. These posts must be a lot of work! Thanks for doing them, though. I learn so much. The last jacket…are you wearing the pink adobe or the lilac? It’s hard to tell on my monitor.

  4. Good morning….thanks for showing some great pre-spring options.  I immediately ordered the white tee without pockets and. Black one too.  I agree…a white Tee without pockets is hard to find,

I do have to say most of the shoes were not very feminine…clunky looking.and they’re just not my taste.  I did like the cheetah print flats

    Have a great weekend,,,

  5. Love your try on sessions best – my fav! The 1st Loft blouse and Loft leopard print blouse are winners. The pink suede jacket is gorgeous. Love your facial expressions….you crack me up. Getting 10 cm (4″) of snow today. Ugh 😝
Getting tired of winter. Ready for spring anyday now.

  6. Oh holy smoke, JoLynne, you couldn’t be more wrong !!!! That daisy print wrap blouse is DA BOMB on you !!!! A wrap style in a dress or blouse is difficult to pull off for those of us with smaller chests (having to pin it to prevent gaping, too much fabric, etc.).  It looks SO CUTE on you, and seems to fit you perfectly !!!! Buying that gorg pink faux suede jacket NOW  … !!!!

  7. Good morning! I have and love those T-shirt’s from crew, they are my fav! But, I’m 5’1” and find the v to be very deep on me, I usually have to wear a cami. The struggle!! I love that last dress on you! It may be out of your comfort zone but it looks gorgeous on you! I also really like the high low hem on you.

Also wondering where all of the coral is? If it’s the color for spring I haven’t seen much of it in stores yet.
    Thanks for all you do!

    1. I thought it looked like a pretty deep v, so I’m glad to have it confirmed. I’m a teacher and am constantly leaning over to help my kids, so that would definitely be a no-go for me.

  8. Wow so much work again gone into these try on sessions. I love that first black blouse from The Loft, and those suede block heel shoes. Also that little pink jacket.. the flats are cute too. I bought a white t shirt from Target.. (Universal Threads.) it’s super soft and comfortable and not see through.  I think I got them for less than 10 bucks as I bought a bunch of colors so great for layering or worn alone. I just wear a nude bra under the white and it’s good to go:) I know how they yellow so much didn’t want to spend a lot. I will check out these from j crew though too.

  9. What a great try-on post!  It is so exhausting finding a white tee that fits all of my criteria, so I really appreciate you sharing a few more options with us.  I am happy that leopard print will still be popular this Spring, which starts March 20, in case you’re wondering.  So that I will wear my spring cardigans and enjoy wearing them more, I do need to buy a couple of nice basic tank tops.  I do hope to find a pair of lower wedge sandals with arch support.  I don’t know why you aren’t keeping the dress that brings attention to your cleavage.  Ha!!  The spring jacket you are keeping is so pretty!  Enjoy your weekend!

  10. Great post, as usual.  I haven’t commented this week (we’ve had a home repair fiasco), but it’s been a really good week on the blog!  Enjoyed so many posts.  Love today’s and the tip for the perfect v-neck tee.  I’m going to get a few!  Enjoy your weekend and trip anticipation  🙂

      1. Rag and Bone are my new favorites. I’ve seen a couple styles in limited quantity and size at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx if anyone wants to do a hunt.

  11. Love the soft pink cashmere sweater and the faux
suede jacket on you! You have the perfect skin tone for that shade! Love the first dress and the platform
sandals… that’s my style for sure! Love the try-on
sessions on Saturdays… fashion makes me happy!!

  12. Great post!  Loving that J Crew white tee.  It looks perfect, but maybe just a tad too low cut for my body.   Short girl problems.  I also loved that leopard print top from Loft, but it’s already sold out.  I’ll keep checking on it.  Thanks for trying so many things on and sharing with us!

  13. I’m currently on the lookout for platform sandals in nude color to wear summer dresses. I LOVE the Vince Camuto sandals featured on this post. I am concerned about the suede material though. Where I live there basically is no spring. We jump from winter to summer. Are suede sandals appropriate for summer wear? Thank you!

  14. I love your try on sessions! Thank you for all the work that goes into them. I LOVE the chiffon halter dress on you, so flattering!
I was all set to order the white vintage V neck tee in white but it looks like it’s sold out in my size. Maybe they’ll restock?
Can you share the link for the red loafers?
    Thanks!

  15. Great post. Love the tops and tees. I want the suede drape jacket it looks fabulous on you. I don’t care for the dresses. Look back at the Eliza J sequinned blue dress, that one is stunning.

  16. Thank you so much for the Try On Haul today. Always enjoy! I loved all of the tops. You look fantastic in a dress whether it be long or short. Loved them all. Thank you for sharing. Have fun on your trip and Be Safe!!
    Linda

  17. OMG your facial expression in that last floral dress by Eliza J is awesome! That dress isn’t right for anyone! 🤣 Yikes!
I love the longer floral dresses on you – I practically live in maxi dresses in the summertime- perfect for brunch by the beach, or backyard evenings with friends, or walking around & shopping in Laguna. I’m going to order the 2nd one but in the size guide on Nordstrom website it says I should order a medium but I’m not nearly as chesty as you! (36 C)  Should I still order my usual size small?  (The Row A floral maxi).

  18. Oh my, I absolutely love that chiffon halter dress on you! I have a spring wedding coming up, and if I thought for minute I’d have another event where I could wear this, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. It’s so so pretty.

  19. Super great deal on that long necklace today w/ free shipping: $18.89!! 💖

For the record, I have to say that most all boyfriend jeans look so unflattering unless you’re at least 5’8″ and reed thin. I disliked those “Mother” jeans so much…just say no. You’ve got such an awesome figure and they cover up your curves! I’m hooked on AG jeans because of you and I appreciate your fashion advice.

    1. It just leans that way sometimes… I’m not even sure why or how to describe it. Thinner materials that drape seem to be more on trend, but they tend to be see-through so it’s a bit of a sticky wicket. 🙂 How to look current without sacrificing modesty… it’s a fine balance sometimes. I think these J.Crew tees do it well.
