See, I can be a fun mom.

I’m not usually the fun mom.  I’m not the mom who gets out in the snow and sleds down the hill and builds snowmen.  I’m not the mom who gets in the swimming pool to play Marco Polo with the kids.  I’m not the mom who spends hours pushing the kids on the swings and cheering them on as they make their way across the monkey bars.  But every once in a while in a weak moment, I actually can be the fun mom.

This week the kids were out of school two days for parent teacher conferences, and after the eleventy-seven snow days we’ve had this year, I decided it was high time I took them somewhere besides the mall.  So on Thursday morning I packed lunches and told the kids to get dressed and drove through Philadelphia and into New Jersey to visit Adventure Aquarium.

Because I’m a blogger and I enjoy experiencing life from the lens of my camera, I took pictures of EVERYTHING.

When we got there, it was FR-E-E-E-ZING but I made the kids stand in front of the river while I snapped a few {dozen} shots.  I figured it might be the only time I caught all three of them together for the rest of the afternoon.

Once inside, they headed straight to the Touch A Shark exhibit.

I was rather intrigued by this spiny lobster.

I have no idea what this is, but I thought it would make a cool picture.  And it did!

And I loved this tank.  Again, with the name.  Have I ever told you that I almost failed high school Biology?

We spent the most time in the room with the sting rays.

They all touched one eventually, but it took D a loooong time to work up the nerve.

In a rare moment of peace and harmony, the girls posed in the rain forest area.

And D even cooperated and gave me a sweet smile when we were outside watching the seals perform tricks in the water.

Guess who’s going to the barber shop next week?

On the way home we stopped by my old stomping grounds and picked up a pizza that was to. die. for.  I love living in the country MOST of the time, but sometimes a girl just needs a good slice of Philly pie.  And no, I have no photos of that.  Some things you just have to experience to believe.

  1. No idea what the purple thingy is, but the green one is a sea anemone.

I love going to the aquarium. Last spring at Sea World, Precious loved petting and feeding the sting rays. Their mouths are on the bottom, so they have to come way up out of the water to snag their snacks. It was so fun watching her be brave, but the fish food? SMELLY!

  2. Hi Jo-Lynne! I grew up on the Jersey Shore (Point Pleasant Beach) so I understand the need for good pizza. We’ve lived in the south most of our married life (25 years), and when we mention out loud we’re dying for good pizza, people usually point us toward Pizza Hut (GAG!). When we come up for a visit, we bring home a few pies, a whole pork roll, and a crumb cake from Mueller’s Bakery in Bay Head. Nothing like Yankee food.

  3. You’re so funny. That looks like a really cool place! It just reminded me that it’s been awhile since we’ve gone to the Orlando Science Center.
Hugs to you my friend. On and I think you’re cool. But you really can’t take my word for anything. LOL!

  4. Looks and sounds like it was a great day. We’ve had some ‘issues’ with our little guy lately that have forced me to be a little bit more creative and, dare I say?, fun. We’ve been in the kitchen a lot lately, rode bikes by the river yesterday and I even joined a raucous game of kickball.

That first photo of your children in front of the river is beautiful!

  5. Well done for makng the most of the kid’s day off.

I am sure they will treasure the memory as much as you will.

Of course now that you are a wonderful photographer you just need to open up that photoshop and create a digital layout of the day 🙂

  6. Looks like a fun day! I bet the pizza was amazing. I am somewhere in between – I do not “play” with my kids all day long but I do make up games, play tag at the park and make snowmen 🙂 I also love that they know how to entertain themselves!

  7. So glad to know that I am not the only un-fun mom out there. That is why they have a child like father.

The aquarium though I dig! We make frequent trips to the Oklahoma Aquarium outside of Tulsa. Love the pictures.

  8. So spill! Where did you get pizza? I’m ashamed to admit that I live 15 minutes from the Aquarium, and STILL have never been there!

  9. I’m not the fun mom either when it comes to making cookies, pushing swings or glittery art. But I do enjoy aquariums and zoos! In fact, we went to the New England Aquarium (Boston) just last week. Naturally I blogged about it too. 🙂 My favorite is Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Lots of hands on stuff for kids!
