Holiday Party Look: Velvet, Sequins, & Coated Denim

Greetings, friends! Is everyone getting back in the swing of things after the long weekend? 20 Days of Winter Fashion is back, and today I’ve got yet another party look for you with a sequin cami and coated denim.

I didn’t want to post this one back-to-back with yesterday’s looks because it’s rather similar, however, it appears that White House Black Market has not yet discontinued their Cyber Monday sale, and they don’t run sales very often, so I’m hoping to slip this in before they turn it off.

I’m such a sucker for a sequin top, and I absolutely love the floral detail on this cami, plus the colors are absolutely stunning. The teal is unexpected yet totally holiday appropriate.

For size reference, I have this cami in a medium, and the straps are adjustable, which is awesome. Being short-waisted and bigger chested, I usually need to shorten the straps on tops like these to keep them modest.

You’ll recognize the metallic clutch and velvet blazer from yesterday’s post. Both pieces are such great holiday style staples. The blazer is still on sale at Lord & Taylor, and you can also find it full stocked at Nordstrom (but not on sale — not sure why they’re not price matching but perhaps customer service would make an adjustment; their online chat feature is great.)

And remember how yesterday I said I didn’t mean to wear these earrings with those other two looks? I still had them in from this look.

I love how they work with this top and the black blazer. The bracelet isn’t quite right for the look, though. I’d wanted to wear this wrap bracelet and couldn’t find it at the time. I often wear this bracelet with these earrings because they work so well together.

Here’s my hint for accessorizing and having the right pieces when you need them. I try to buy things that work together, and then I always wear them together. Boring? Maybe, but I think it gets tiring to always be putting new combinations of accessories together. When I find a pairing that works, I use it over and over.

Unfortunately, these earrings are sold out, but I love this pair. I think it would work with so many festive outfits — and it would work well with this coil wrap bracelet.  Or this bracelet is another good one for dressy looks, and it would work well with those teardrop earrings.

On the bottom, I went with black coated denim skinnies and black suede pumps. I really like the mix of textures in this outfit. Coated jeans are a fun way to get the leather look without the price tag, and I find faux leather incredibly uncomfortable. Coated denim can be machine washed, and while it’s a tad stiff, it’s still breathable because it’s mostly cotton.

I’ve had these coated jeans for years, but I think these at Shopbop are pretty close in color. They’re at least the same DL1961 Emma legging. I also rounded up a few other pairs from different brands in the shopping widget below, including a couple under $100.

My shoes are like 15 years old, no joke. I linked up a similar style, but any black suede pump would work with this look. A strappy sandal would be great too, but I think I’d stick to black.

This is a fun holiday party look that is plenty festive but comfortable too, and the cami is so versatile — you could dress it down with blue jeans or remove the jacket if you want a less conservative look. It would also look nice with black trousers and a ponte blazer for a holiday work function, and I can also see wearing this exact outfit working to a NYE party.

  1. Great holiday post. I don’t need any dressy clothes for the holiday but if I did that might be it. The casual one is more my style. Thanks for posting that one.

  2. I love how you can share that a pair of shoes you are featuring are 15 years old…it proves the point that quality is worth the price, which is something that I seem to need a constant reminder about 😁. I also like the tip about coated denim being a great option for achieving the leather leggings trend. I love the idea of leather but it’s not a common look around here; coated denim seems more doable.
    Awesome post, as always!🧡

    1. These were my first Stuart Weitzmans. They were on sale, and my mom treated me. It had to be over 13 years ago because it was before I had my youngest daughter. I’ve tried to take really good care of them, I still have the box and the suede brush that came with them. 🙂 I love bringing them out every year, and they still look great. Definitely a cost per wear win! 🙂

  3. Loved this post as I had just bought that cami! I’m planning on wearing it with a fuchsia colored velvet jacket from Talbots. I got the slim ankle pants from WHBM that they are showing with this cami. I see that you are not wearing any necklace, do you think that the cami is jewelry enough?

  4. What a pretty outfit!  And you look fabulous!  I’m glad y’all survived the rain yesterday!  What I saw on the news last night, some areas got hit really hard.  Better rain than snow!  Good luck with all of your appointments today!

  5. Wow another great holiday look.. you’re hitting them out of the park. Love the little cami it makes the outfit. So nice to see the casual holiday look as it’s great for house parties .

  6. Gorgeous! I’ve just purchased the cami and jacket, so fingers crossed and thank-you. Not sure I can pull off the leather look pants though, so I might just have to stick with black pants/jeans.

  7. Gorgeous outfit and it really looks great on you! Last year was the first time I participated in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (thanks to your blog) and I purchased the bracelet you are modeling today. Sadly I returned it because I wasn’t sure that I would ever wear it so, of course, I’m kicking my self today after reading your post! Aggggg!!! :)))

  8. I was out yesterday looking for a top with just a touch of shimmer for an upcoming Christmas party. I like how you do dressy with jeans. Your tops and heels elevate a pair of jeans. I’m taking my inspiration from you.

  9. Didn’t think you could top yesterday’s holiday outfits, but you definitely did it with this one. I LOVE this look! Makes me want every piece!

  10. Wow Jo-lynne I love everything about this look! You look so glamed up! 😍 I have been looking for black coated jeans for almost a year and every time I would find them they would sell out quickly.. This is perfect for cold Minnesota weather. ❄️

  11. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I just stumbled across your blog through Pinterest and wanted to say hello.  I’m also a 40+ blogger (though started just over a year ago).  Your holiday look is so chic and wearable!  I bought my first pair of DL169 coated jeans this summer and love how versatile they are.  I’ve been finding a lot of lot cut/slit holiday party styles online and they just don’t work for moms like me!  🙂 Nipa

  12. Wowza!! You look amazing in this outfit!! I don’t have any occasion to wear this but you make me want to find a reason. I always love the “20 days of” series that you and Cyndi do, and this one has been fabulous.

  13. Love the sequin top too, it’s stunning, and looks to be versatile with numerous neutrals. I checked the link on your site, and several commenters who purchased felt the top was a bit too short. I was wondering your opinion on this…

  14. Another fabulous holiday look! The cami is gorgeous!!

I recently learned that Nordstrom will not price match Lord & Taylor. They will price match Saks and a few other stores. I called to see if they would price match a pair of Sam Edelman booties and they absolutely would not do it. I would have preferred getting Nordy points but L&T offering Shoprunner isn’t a bad deal either.
