When Fall Feels Like Summer

Hello and happy hump day! I was going to update and republish an old post on shapewear today and then last night we took these pictures of this sleeveless cowl neck sweater outfit, and I didn’t want to wait to share it.

It’s been unseasonably warm here in PA this week — up into the low 80s yesterday!!! It’s strange because on Saturday I bundled up in a coat and scarf for my son’s band competition, and yesterday I wore shorts and a t-shirt. I’m not complaining. I love warm weather, and it’s low humidity, sunny, with a nice breeze. Pretty much perfection if I’ve ever seen it! I actually preferred Sunday and Monday when it only hit the low 70s, but I’ll take 82 for a couple of days.

I purchased a couple of sleeveless cowl neck tops at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale back in July, and people asked me when I’d wear them. Well, the answer is now!

When fall feels like summer, I pull out my sleeveless cowl neck tops and suede ballet flats. The thicker materials say fall, but the sleeveless style keeps me from getting too overheated. Booties would be too warm and sandals seem too summery so ballet flats are the perfect answer.

The sweater I’m wearing sold out, but this Two by Vince Camuto Sleeveless Cowl Neck Sweater is very similar. In fact, it’s the same brand as mine. It also comes in a cool electric blue, a gorgeous deep red they call Malbec, and a basic black. For size reference, I’m wearing the medium, but I wish I’d bought the small. I even tried to shrink it by washing it and drying it, and I don’t think it took up much if at all.

Another sleeveless cowl neck sweater option is this one by Classiques Entier. It is pricey, but the quality is amazing and it’s a classic that you’d have in your closet for years. I’m tempted but trying to resist!

Last week when Shopbop had their 30% off sale, I splurged on two wardrobe items I’ve been wanting for a long time — these jeans and leopard clutch. Both are quite spendy, but at 30% off, I decided it was now or never. These are the AG Raw Hem Legging Ankle Jeans. AG makes several versions of the Legging Ankle Jeans, and they’re pretty much a classic. When I saw these, I really liked the amount of distressing and the raw hem.

I know some of y’all don’t like jeans with rips in them, and some have asked if it’s okay to wear them after 40. I say it’s a personal decision, and I think it depends more on your personal style than your age. I’ve always been drawn to distressed denim and clothing with an edgy vibe. I like pairing something a little bit tough, like distressed jeans, with something more classic and refined, like this ivory cowl neck sweater and pink suede flats.

Also, these jeans are sooooo incredibly comfortable. I put them on the day they came in the mail and they slid on like I’d been wearing them for years. They have that lived-in feel right from the get-go. I wore them all day and didn’t take them off till I went to bed that night. They have an amazing fit and they don’t stretch out — they just give enough to be comfortable.

If you like this style but not the hefty price tag, BLANKNYC makes a similar pair that gets great reviews. There’s also this pair by SP Black that has the raw hem.

I’ve had these shoes since the #NSale, and I’ve only worn them a couple of times, but I plan to start wearing them more! They’re so sassy and cute, don’t you think?? I started to pair heels with this outfit (I have pumps in this exact same pink suede) and I felt silly so then I grabbed these flats. These are the perfect pop of color — a little dressy but not over the top and they have the fun spike detail on the back.

I finished the look with my new leopard clutch along with hoop earrings and a cuff bracelet. Y’all know my obsession with all things leopard, and this clutch is simply gorgeous. Leopard acts as a neutral and has a way of elevating any basic outfit.

There’s a lot going on in the sweater with the cowl neck and the pattern in the knit so I decided to forego a necklace and just wear my favorite hoops. Anything dangly tends to get caught in the cowl neck so I like hoops that fasten shut because they are visible but don’t get in the way. This cuff bracelet is my go-to for wearing with sleeveless tops because it’s large enough to make a statement on its own although a stack of bangles would be pretty too. How fun are these!?!

This is the type of outfit I’d wear out to lunch with friends or a casual dinner out with the family. Yes, my social life pretty much revolves around food. Ha! I’ll change out the clutch for a shoulder bag and wear this pretty much all day long.

I also think the Felicia Flats in the Port Wine or Tango Red suede would be stunning with this outfit, and they’re definitely more comfortable than these pointy toe flats, although these Reyanne flats aren’t bad. They do have some cushion in the footbed, but the sole of the shoe is stiffer than the Felicia and the pointy toe makes them a little dressier.

  1. Really cute outfit! This time of year is my absolute favorite weather but we have also been having warmer days here in Ohio that make it difficult for me to bust out my fall uniform of booties, sweaters, and scarves! It is funny that you mention those flats because I have been eyeing both colors and can’t decide which I would get more use out of. I am leaning toward the port wine because I love that color with grey but the red tango is also tempting!!

    1. Yeah, I think the port wine is so rich… but red is fun for holiday… touch choice! I’d almost have to order both and see them in person to decide. I have the TB ones in wine, so I’m resisting another pair of Felicia Flats. For now. Ha!

  2. Very simple yet quite chic Jo-Lynne!!
I think the bright colored shoes are my favorite part of this outfit (well, of course, I AM a shoe girl!!)
The leopard clutch adds fun and the cowl is very pretty.
I have one pair of distressed denim, but I haven’t decided if I feel comfortable in them yet. I know many bloggers my age wear them, but not many other women around where I live do!

    1. I do see them around here some, but I know what you mean. It’s not the norm. I’ve been wearing them for a long time, so I don’t think too much about it anymore. I do remember buying my first pair – they were jean shorts, actually – and it felt odd at first. With any trend you’re unsure of, I think you have to take a deep breath and JUST DO IT once and after that it no longer seems like a big deal. 🙂

  3. I would love to borrow your entire outfit please. I had a great sleeveless cowl neck and accidentally put a hole in it — been searching for another one ever since. Love the distressed jeans and shoe color. So jealous of the clutch — I have been eyeing that Clare V clutch forever but never pull the trigger as it is pricey and not a “necessary” purchase. Maybe a good Christmas gift??!

    1. I did pull out the shorts yesterday!!! It was 82 here. I’ll probably be wearing them again today. I threw this on last night at dinnertime for the photo shoot and then kept it on, it was fine later in the day, but mid-day was quite hot.

  4. I love everything about your outfit !the blank NYC jeans are awesome ,very comfy I’m 54 (yikes still can’t get used to that )I wear distressed jeans and love them !!I’m in IL and finally turned air back on ????

  5. It was 90 here in Dallas yesterday!! We could definitely wear sleeveless cowl necks in the AC though. 🙂

I absolutely love those shoes and wonder about the size. If my foot is kind of wide at the toes, do you think they would fit?

    1. My foot is wide at the toes as well and they work great for me! I did get the 8.5 and they slip a bit on the heel of my right foot. I probably need to put a heel pad in there or something. But my toes are comfy considering the shape of the shoe.

  6. LOVE this outfit. I’m getting my leopard print clutch out and styling it with something. And I have to confess, I like the look of deconstructed jeans. I just haven’t been brave enough to buy a pair yet. Now that you’ve led me down the path of premium jeans, I’m afraid I can’t go back, so I’ll just have to wait for another sale. Do you keep a running list of things to keep an eye out for? It hadn’t occurred to me to look for a cowl neck sleeveless sweater in July during the Nordstrom sale, but now I wish I had.

I just bought a pair of black moto boots that are super comfy, but I’m not sure how to style them, Any moto boot outfits on your horizon, Jo-Lynne?
