Souper Saturday

I love soup, but I don’t make it much.  I think that’s because I’m seriously lacking soup recipes.  So I was thinking of hosting a carnival.  And then I was visiting Janel this morning, and I remembered that I actually made this button for HER carnival.  I’m linking in, and I hope you will too!  So I can get LOTS of great new soup recipes to try.

This is one of my family’s favorite winter meals.  As my 5-year-old said to her 3-year-old sister last night, “It looks disgusting, but it tastes really good.”  And that about sums it up.

Split Pea Soup

1 pound dried split peas

8 cups water

1 large onion, chopped

1 cup finely chopped celery

1/4 tsp pepper

1 ham bone or 2 pounds ham shanks, or smoked pork hocks  (I always bake a ham and save the bone and the leftover meat and use that in my split pea soup.)

3 medium carrots, cut into 1/4-inch slices

Heat the peas and the water till boiling in a large pot on top of the stove.  Boil uncovered for 2 minutes and then take off the heat and cover.  Let stand for about an hour.

Stir in the chopped onion and celery and the pepper.  Add the ham bone.  Heat to boiling and then reduce heat.  Cover and simmer 1-1/2 hours.

Remove the ham bone and pick meat off the bone.  Discard the bone.  Cut the meat into small bite and return to soup.  Add the carrots.  Heat to boiling and then reduce heat.  Cover and simmer until the carrots are tender, about 30 minutes.  Serve with homemade bread or rolls.  ENJOY!

  1. I love Split Pea soup soooo much. If I could just convince my family. I will try this new recipe and see if they like it better. You know, it is the color they can’t get over. I am like, “Get over it! Pea green is so in!”
    Thanks Jo-Lynne – for everything!!!

  2. Ditto on the soup philosophy.

So I’m going to go check out the links too! And, by the way, your soup is gluten free, naturally! (Just a bit of free marketing advice. hehe)

So I’m so going to try this recipe. We used to eat it when I was growing up and I loved it, I just thought that the dried pea thing would be too much work. I think I’m going to try this in my crock pot. And leave it in all day.

    Thanks!

  3. Thanks for this yummy recipe! It sounds awesome with the weather we have going on right now! Have a great weekend!

  4. Well, I’ll admit it. I’ve never tried split pea soup. But you make it sound so yummy, maybe I’ll have to try it! Now I just need to make up another name for it, to tell the kids……

  5. We love split pea soup! This is similar to the recipe I use. I always make it after we have a ham.

I love soups, too and that button is too cute!

I’m actually already planning on a whole soup week in January on my blog, so maybe you’ll find some more ideas and you can link this up!
