Spring Activewear Refresh

It may not feel like it out there right now, but summer is coming and bathing suit season will soon be upon us. That means it’s time to get reacquainted with the gym, pick up an extra yoga class or two, or get outside and start moving.

No matter what your activity-of-choice, Zella has workout gear for that!

Today I’m teaming up with Nordstrom to share a couple of spring workout looks from Zella that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident, whether you’re at the gym or on the trail or walking the dog in the neighborhood.

Zella is a Nordstrom-exclusive brand that offers quality activewear at accessible prices. I can always depend on them to have stylish, functional, and comfortable workout gear that fits great and holds up well through years of wearing and washing.

Spring Workout Look #1

This first look is for anyone who wants to be cute and comfortable at the gym but doesn’t want anything tight or form-fitting.

When I’ve been indulging a little too much and I’m feeling thicker through the middle, I prefer a top that skims the body rather than the more body-con styles that we often see in activewear.

There’s a time for those too, but this top is perfect for those days when you just want to wear something loose and comfortable, without looking like a total schlump.

The material is thick and soft, and so nice against the skin, but this top is far from frumpy. I love the extra details like the seaming on the sleeve and the way it hangs longer in the back than the front for extra bum coverage. Mine is a beautiful shade of plum, but it also comes in blue and black.

For size reference, I’m wearing a medium. I probably could have gone down to a small, but I usually wear medium in Zella, so that’s what I ordered, and I don’t mind it being a little roomy. It will probably shrink up some when I wash it, and it’s supposed to have a relaxed fit.

I’m also really loving these high waist midi leggings, also by Zella. They’re a straight cropped style, and they have a high waistband that holds everything in and doesn’t ever slide down, even when running.

These leggings are also nice and thick for ultimate coverage. There is absolutely nothing showing through these pants — and it’s so worth spending a little more for that!

This zip hoodie is the perfect piece to top off your workout gear when you’re going to and from the gym. It’s cut from a super soft cotton-blend fleece and pieced together with ergonomic seams so it’s extremely comfortable.

Once again, I’m wearing the medium, and it’s a little roomy but I like that in a sweatshirt. I can zip it up without it feeling snug, and there’s plenty of room underneath for a relaxed top like this one.

Finally, if you’re in need of a stylish bag to carry your water bottle and extra gear or a change of clothes, this canvas zip tote is packed with pockets both inside and out for all of your organizational needs.

I love how it has webbed handles that fit over the shoulder as well as an adjustable crossbody strap so you can be hands-free when you need to.

Spring Workout Look #2

If the gym isn’t your thing, but you want to be comfortable and put-together when you’re running errands or walking the dog, this next look is for you. It’s also quite cozy and warm — perfect for blustery spring days.

This thick jacket has an oversized drawstring collar that you can wear zipped or unzipped, and it’s made of the softest, fleece-lined cotton blend fabric. I swear, this jacket is like putting on a bear hug.

These slim joggers are thick and fleecy as well, and they have a nice fit with contoured seams in the back and classic banded cuffs. I have a medium in both pieces.

Underneath, I wore a long-sleeve white tee by Caslon — another Nordstrom-exclusive brand that never disappoints. When the weather starts to warm up, I’ll swap this out for a short-sleeve tee or tank. By the way, Zella also makes a good cropped jogger for milder days.

With both looks, I’m wearing the training sneakers I recently purchased to wear when I’m lifting weights. I really like the stability they provide, compared to the running shoes I used to wear for my workouts.

It is generally recommended that you save your running shoes for running and wear other sneakers for gym workouts and daily wear, so that’s what I try to do. I used to wear my older running shoes for working out, but that isn’t great either because they’re worn down.

I can’t believe it took me so long to buy specific sneakers for strength training, but now I’m never going back!

The best part about shopping at Nordstrom for activewear is you get the benefit of their generous return policy and services like the The Nordy Club, Buy Online & Pick Up in Store, and Curbside Pickup.

I also try to stock up on activewear during their Bonus Points days, or I use one of my Personal Double Points Days so I get more Nordstrom Notes to spend at a later date. If you’re not already a member of The Nordy Club, it’s free and totally worth it, even if you only shop at Nordstrom a few times a year.

  1. Headed to the gym on my lunch hour today! Finally some nice spring like weather here in Calgary – woohoo! Although walking the dogs last night was a little wet and messy – they didn’t seem to mind! 🙂 On that note, would you consider doing a post on spring footwear that would include this messy time of year? Not necessarily rubber boots or runners, but are there other options out there? Something in between? Thanks!

    1. I just wear my leather boots/booties – I usually wear my Blondo boots as a sub for rainboots since they’re waterproof but a little more stylish. Or loafers if it’s not too cold.

  2. I’m just on my way to work out.. these look comfy. I agree about the sneakers. My daughter bought me a new balance pair for my birthday from the clinic where she works.., they have improved a pain I’ve had in my left foot from hyper extension while walking or on the treadmill. What we wear on our feet working out really does matter. Hope you’re feeling better 😀.. happy first day of spring 🌸🌼🌷💐

  3. Two cute looks! I was excited for you when I spotted those Metcons on your feet! They are my VERY favorite shoes for lifting! I rotate between a few pair (extra fun to switch it up with different color ways) since I hit the gym almost every day. They are the best for rope climbs, too! Super grippy! And I agree wholeheartedly for having shoes that match your activity. I never run in my lifting shoes. And I never lift in my running shoes! <3
