Spring Coat Guide 2023

I’ve been getting some requests for spring jackets and coats, so I decided to update my Spring Coat Guide for 2023! Spring jackets add an extra layer of interest to your outfits, so it’s nice to have a few options, if budget and closet space allow.

Depending on where you’re going and what you’re doing, oftentimes people don’t even see what’s underneath your coat, so it’s a shame to spend time and effort putting an outfit together just to cover it up with the same coat everyday.

For that reason, I like to have several coats and jackets for various purposes. Some spring jackets are worn as outerwear that I remove when I go indoors, and some are part of my outfit.

To keep them all organized and at the ready, I keep denim jackets and other outfit completer styles in my bedroom closet, and I keep spring coats for outerwear purposes in a coat closet downstairs.

Spring Coat Guide 2023

These are the five types of spring coats you may want to have in your closet this year, and what styles and colors are trending.

#1. Anorak/Raincoat

Lolë Piper Oversized Rain Jacket in Paprika (S)

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers… In most areas of the country, we equate spring with a decent amount of rain. We certainly get our fair share here in Pennsylvania, so having outerwear that’s appropriate for wet weather is essential.

I love a trench coat, but it can feel a bit much sometimes. An anorak or raincoat is the perfect casual alternative. My best tip is to make sure it has a hood so you aren’t obligated to carry an umbrella.

The Lolë Piper Oversized Rain Jacket is legit. It has every feature you could possibly want in a rain jacket. It’s fully seam-sealed to keep you dry, and it packs into a backpack for travel.

You can cinch the waist as well as the arms, and it has a fully attached hood, so you don’t have to deal with it coming accidentally unzipped or unsnapped. (That always happens to me with removable hoods, even on high quality jackets.)

The Lolë Piper Oversized Rain Jacket retails for $155, and it comes in a bunch of great colors and sizes ranging from XXS–XXL. It runs big, and I sometimes need a medium in coats, so I went with the small, and it fits perfectly with room for layering underneath.

Just for fun, I wore this bright orange coat over a pink top. I don’t typically think of pairing orange and pink, but I’ve been seeing it done a lot lately, so I wanted to try it. I think it’s a great way to change up my usual neutral looks!

Another nice option in this category is the Everlane ReNew Anorak. It also has an oversized fit and a lot of the same features as the Lolë Piper. Both come highly recommended, so of course, I had to try them out and see for myself!

This jacket is made of all recycled materials, and it’s nice and roomy without being overwhelming. It has a high-low dolphin hem and a two-way zip front with snap closure, and you can cinch the waist if you want a more fitted appearance.

You can wear it with the collar turned down, or pull it up for extra protection from the elements. It also has two large patch pockets on the front with a fold-over flap, to keep the rain out when not in use.

The Everlane ReNew Anorak retails for $128, and it comes in a wide range of sizes; I’m wearing the small. It runs a little big, with a generous fit, but I wouldn’t size down. Color choices usually change with the seasons. It’s currently available in Black, Turmeric, and the Bay Leaf that I’m wearing here.

#2. Trench Coat

Gap Factory Modern Trench (S)

A classic trench coat is my solution for dressier spring occasions, but it can be worn as casual wear too. Don’t be afraid to pull out your trench and throw it on over jeans and a casual t-shirt, or even your gym clothes if you want to elevate your look to run errands after your workout.

The Gap Factory Modern Trench is a double breasted style in a traditional beige tone with a tie waist and contrasting tortoiseshell buttons. The longer knee-length silhouette plays into the current trends, and it fits pretty true to size.

I like it best unbuttoned and open in front, so it becomes more or less a part of my outfit, but I do remove it when I go inside. This trench coat retails for $119, but right now it’s 20% off with code ALLYOURS.

While a neutral trench is a staple in my wardrobe, it’s also fun to have one in a bright color to change things up. This Sam Edelman cotton trench comes in Birch and Black as well as this gorgeous Orange Poppy.

Sam Edelman Water Resistant Cotton Trench (S)

This a single-breasted style that’s a bit shorter than the Gap Factory Modern Trench, which makes it feel a little more casual and a bit sporty. I love how it levels up my casual denim outfits.

This trench is fully lined, and it has the traditional notched lapels and epaulettes. I also like the contrast of the tortoiseshell buttons and buckle.

It retails for $165, but it’s currently on sale for $129.99. It runs true to size, or size up if in between. The small fits me well over a lightweight t-shirt, but it felt a little snug when I buttoned it over this chunky cotton knit sweater.

#3. Sporty Cropped Jacket

If you want to update your spring coat wardrobe this season, add a sporty cropped style. These are great for those of us who live a casual lifestyle and want a topper that isn’t fussy or cumbersome but still provides some protection from the elements.

Z Supply On The Move Quilted Jacket (S)

The Z Supply On The Move Quilted Jacket has a great casual vibe, and it leans a bit sporty so it looks great with an elevated sweatshirt and fashion sneakers… which is basically my everyday spring uniform!

This quilted jacket has a front zip and snap closure with a stand collar and adjustable bungee toggle cuffs. Front patch pockets add another fun detail, and the classic black gives it more of an urban look and feel.

The slightly oversized look is trending right now, and it also makes it ideal for layering over a chunky sweater or sweatshirt. This jacket retails for $129 at Evereve, and shipping is free.

Another nice option in this category is the LOFT Modern Rain Jacket. I shared more about this one in last week’s Trend to Try.

LOFT Modern Rain Jacket – 40% off (S) // SUNDRY thermal top (S) // MOTHER denim (29) // LV Graceful PM // sunnies (option) // earrings c/o

It has raglan sleeves and snap flap pockets, and a swingy shape, which is fun. It also has an attached hood, in case you forget your umbrella.

With bright colors trending this spring, this gorgeous shade of green makes a nice topper to my neutral outfits, but it also makes a fun contrast worn over other lights and brights. It also comes in a pretty bright blue.

The LOFT Modern Rain Jacket retails for $140, but it’s currently on sale for $84, and it runs true to size.

#4. Denim & Utility Jackets

KUT from the Kloth Jacqueline Denim Jacket (S)

A denim jacket is useful all year-round, but I probably wear mine most in the springtime. I don’t usually wear my blue denim jackets with blue jeans, but I’ll wear them with white jeans or any other color.

The KUT from the Kloth Jacqueline Denim Jacket is my current go-to. I also have the AG Robyn, which is softer and has a little more stretch to it, but the price is up there, and I actually prefer the wash on the Jacqueline.

I also like to have a white denim jacket to wear with blue jeans, and it also lightens up black jeans for spring.

And, of course, there are colors as well. I had a pink denim jacket last summer that I loved. This year, they brought it back in Rosy Pink. I also love this Cactus color.

I also like utility jackets for spring, and they operate like denim jackets in my closet, although I’m more likely to take these off inside. I don’t have one at the moment, but I did include some in the shopping widget below.

I hope this post is helpful! Of course, not everyone needs all of these types of spring coats, but these are all good styles to consider if you’re feeling like you need another jacket or two to round out your spring wardrobe.

  1. I like a good denim jacket, but as for the utility ones, I buy them and for some reason don’t wear them. I just donated my off red one I bought for Fall years ago from GAP, I think I’ve worn 2 times. I can’t figure out why this style jacket doesn’t do it for me. I have the trench, the shorter rain jacket, but need a new longer rain jacket. I tend to go for neutral, as I feel I will get tired of the colored ones so quick and I’m kind of OCD about how the colored ones go with the shirt underneath. I feel it limits me. I like all the ones you styled. Thanks for the update.

  2. Thanks for the great post. That pink denim jacket is so cheerful and looks fantastic on you. And it’s giving me major spring fever!

  3. Happy Monday…..love the first rain jacket and keeping it in mind…..similar to one I “had” and got rid of???? I miss it now. If anyone is traveling to northern Europe, etc. it’s a great one to take. Not heavy, goes over the bum (if you get wet then need to sit on bus etc, your bum doesn’t get wet, and great to layer which is always important for some travels and it comes in so many colors.

I missed the sale but I did finally order the floral top from Evereve……take care.

  4. I really like the Loft green short jacket and Everlane tan anorak, both of those look so user friendly for spring when going casual. I just received the Maya tank in Flame and Fushia from Everlane, love both colors; have been wanting the Flame since you showed it last summer, $31.99 each! Now I need the white one.

  5. I have the Kut Kara jacket in rust (last fall) and light denim (last summer) and may just “need” the rosy pink. Thank you!

  6. Thanks for this post! I just ordered the short Loft jacket in the blue since it suits my lifestyle the best.
