SPRING FASHION FORECAST: What’s In and What’s Out for 2020

Who’s ready to talk 2020 spring fashion trends??? I’m in full-on winter mode here and spring isn’t even a twinkle in my eye, but I had some requests during last week’s Facebook Live to talk about what’s ahead for spring, so I did some research and this is what I came up with!

There will be plenty more winter outfits, but for today, let’s look ahead to what we might be wearing this spring.

First, let’s discuss color trends for spring. The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year is Classic Blue, which is awesome because it’s such a versatile color, and universally flattering.

As far as fashion trends, well… we’ll have to wait to see how these trends will translate to the mainstream, but as of right now, they are pretty far out there!

All of the fashion websites following the runway trends list corsets, sheer tops, hot pants, super long bermuda shorts, sheer (as in see-through) outfits, bralettes under blazers, and high side slits… oh, boy!

Nevertheless, I persisted.

I dug deep and came up with 10 wearable trends we may be seeing in stores this spring.

I’ll be curious to see how some of these styles translate to the masses when our favorite retailers start rolling out their spring lines.

Then keep scrolling to see the trends that are probably going OUT this spring.

Spring Fashion Forecast: What's In and What's Out for Spring 2020

The 10 Most Wearable Spring 2020 Trends

Remember, these are TRENDS. You do NOT have to wear them all. Pick and choose which trends you will try based on your body type, lifestyle, personal style aesthetic, etc.

But, I do encourage you to pick one or two to experiment with. It’s a good idea to integrate a couple of the season’s trends into your existing wardrobe –that’s how to keep it modern and fresh!

#1. prep trend

The trend watchers report seeing the prep trend all over the runway, and the easiest way to get this look is with loafers.

Evidently they’re cropping up in all sorts of futuristic shapes, but I predict we are going to see more of the traditional loafers and loafer mules that have been around for the past few seasons.

#2. suits

This probably goes along with #1, but the suits I’m seeing are pretty funky. I don’t find suits very practical for my everyday life, so I will probably sit this one out.

#3. crochet

This was in last year’s list, but I never saw it much once spring rolled around. Did you?

Crochet is one of the more wearable trends, but it’s got a bit of a boho vibe, so choose a piece that works with your personal style aesthetic.

If it’s a little bit see-through, don’t let that deter you. You can always wear a tank underneath. Or try a crochet bag!

#4. big bags

This cracked me up, from Elle.com: “For those who prefer practicality over the micro trends, it’s finally time to retire 2019’s itty-bitty-it-bags that didn’t fit anything to begin with. Think big. Bottega Veneta and Off-White are ushering in XXL editions large enough to fit all of your life’s problems. Literally—they can probably fit your therapist.”

I couldn’t find an example that was as dramatic as the ones they were showing, but this one from Topshop is kind of fun… it also comes in a pretty caramel color too.

#5. elevated polka dots

Polka dots for spring certainly aren’t groundbreaking, but we can look forward to seeing this classic print popping up in new shapes and sizes.

#6. wide legged pants

They keep telling us wide legged pants are coming back in style, and they’re all over the websites, but I’m not seeing a lot of them in real life or even on the other fashionistas I follow.

This is a tricky trend to pull off, especially for those of us who are larger on top and short-waisted, but they can be really chic on the right person.

#7. plaid

Plaid was hot last fall, and it’s going strong right into spring. I kind of like the idea of plaid cropped skinnies in spring colors…

#8. psychedelic prints

60’s and 70’s inspired styles are huge this spring, and along with that comes clashing colors and psychedelic prints… I’ve always had a thing for tie dye, and I’m seeing a lot of it already this season!

#9. neon and brights

Bright colors and neons are cropping up again this season — I’m pretty sure this was on last year’s list too. My favorite way to incorporate a bright color into my outfits is with my footwear.

#10. long dresses

Long dresses are here for another season, along with high slits and 60’s and 70’s inspired prints.

FASHION TRENDS THAT ARE GOING OUT FOR 2020

I added this section last year, and everyone seemed to like it.

#1. chunky dad sneakers // To which I say with glee, buy-bye!

#2. clear bags // I’m surprised by this one, mainly because some stadium rules make them a necessity. We shall see…

#3. letter necklaces // These were super popular with the younger girls, I didn’t see them much in our circles. At any rate, I thought I’d include it.

#4. leopard print slip skirts // I chuckled when I saw this because someone just asked me if these will be in style for another few years. I never know how much credence to give these lists… it really depends on where you life. I would still wear it!

#5. boilersuits // Good riddance, I say! I never got on that train. Some girls looked really cute in them, but I think you have to be young and reed-thin.

#6. bike shorts as streetwear // These were hot on last year’s list, and a few of the younger bloggers I follow tried to embrace this trend. It was even the image I chose for my Spring 2019 Fashion Forecast (they were styled with a blazer and pumps.) But the trend never really took off, and Harper’s Bazaar lists it as one of the trends to retire in 2020.

#7. hair clips // Again, this is a trend I saw mostly on the younger set. Evidently the headband trend is still going strong, but the hair clips are going out. I don’t wear either, so I’m kind of eh on this one.

Okay, go for it. Tell me what you think.

But before you say “I will never…” remember that there will be more wearable versions of most of these trends as the spring lines start to hit the stores. I’ll be curious to see how that pans out!

  1. Yeah for Spring!  I’m ready. I love a good pop of color shoe. I’m excited about this post. Being in FL we have summer and fall/spring weather. I’m scarred from tie dying 2 classroom of tees for 60 kids  Ha. My eye twitches when I see tie dye. I won’t be jumping on that bandwagon.

  2. Could see myself in a crocheted top or a tie dye tee, but not a lot else on the new trend list. I’m afraid that even though that bag is cute, I’d need a trip to the physical therapist after using it! God bless them for removing the chunky dad sneakers from the list. Thanks for a great post, Jo-Lynne!

  3. Great post! So ready for spring and I live in the south where the winter weather has been mild enough that my ferns and potted begonias are still thriving😊but I love spring and summer fashion.
Curious as to what you are seeing for shoe styles…

  4. Oh boy!  The fashion industry really knows how to ramp things up and push the limits then wait and watch to see how many females actually get on the train.  Maybe I am a prud, but I still don’t like to see thru anyone’s top layer of clothing, especially women.  And unfortunately there will be lots of females that will wear see through, just because it’s trendy, with no consideration of their size, etc. , and they won’t wear a tank or anything else underneath that provides coverage.  I love the in color!  I also like adding a pop of color, which can be done without breaking the bank.  The plaid cropped pants are cute, but they accentuate areas on my body that I don’t want to draw attention to.  While I like larger handbags, the XXL size may be a bit much.  It will be interesting for sure.  Have an awesome day!

  5. I love most of these or at least can see wearing a version of most so Yay! for spring which is not far off here in Florida! Thanks for putting these lists together!

  6. So funny about the “letter” necklaces!  I found an artist who makes necklaces out of old typewriters…He takes a key and turns it into a locket…I get so many compliments on it..I love what you say about wearing what you like and feeling good in it!  Thanks for all you do

    1. Vicki.  I have a old typewriter key bracelet my friend made me. I will continue to wear it and my initial necklaces. :). I just got my first grand child and my daughter gave me a little heart charm with babies first name initial then I can add To it as more babies come. My other daughters pregnant and is already ordering me my charm. It was my bday gift. We were just waiting on the sex. It’s a boy. So of course I’ll be wearing my initial charm necklace.

    2. That is too cool! And you should totally keep wearing letter and initial necklaces if you have them and love them. I think there was one particular style that got really popular due to Chloe someone or other… see how out of touch I really am? 😂

  7. Yeah I think the trends we see really depends on where we live.. I often find it strange when things are on trend but the stores aren’t carrying it. Sometimes they’re a little late. I don’t think I can go back to larger handbags ( shoulder and neck issues) plus way to big for my frame. Thanks for the update. I can’t wait to see how you style some of these.

  8. Fun post! I like subtle boho details, so I’m on board with the crochet. The plaid pants you linked as an example are so cute! I’d try something like that.
It’ll be fun to see how some of these ideas actually play out. Thanks for the sneak peek!

  9. I love the Pantone color of the year!  Blue is my favorite color to wear.  As far as the trends, I like the idea of some crochet, the neon accents, longer dresses, and maybe a psychedelic print.

  10. Thanks for this, Jo-Lynne. I’ve just started to research the trends for my blog, but I probably won’t address them for a few weeks. I saw the psychedelic prints, specifically florals and polka dots were trending. I think I could get into those, as well as crochet and plaid. I might even get out my maxi dresses and put some wear on them. I’m not a suit wearer either and wide leg pants don’t work on everyone and I’m one of those. Ha, ha. I like big bags and I can not lie!! The only problem with a big bag is I tend to over fill. I’ll be throwing in my computer, a notebook, books etc. I appreciate your take on these and I’m glad, I’m not the only one, who throws some of them out the window. Ha, ha. Have a great day! – Amy

  11. Well, I like the plaid look. As for the 60s and 70s I will stay away from those. You know what they say. If you wore them the first time you are too old the 2nd. I stick to that rule. I was shopping Saturday and saw some of the wide leg pants. Not sure how that would look on my 5’0 frame. It might swallow me. Thanks for all the info!

  12. This was a fun post!  I like the idea of some of these trends as accents.  I have a couple of tops from last year with a little crochet accent and I look forward to wearing them again.  Plaid and polka dots are always fun.  Thanks for doing the research for us!  It will be interesting to see what comes out in the stores in my area.

  13. Timely post! Today, I was just doing another go-through of my closet to see what I may already have that is similar to that which I’ve seen in upcoming spring collections (the new cabi clothing collection got me energized). I was happy to find that I can re-style a lot of items to make them fresh for this year. I have so much blue in my wardrobe anyway that I’m just re-working brighter contrasting tops to make it feel springy. I lean preppy, so that is easy for me! I’ve learned not to dive too far in to trends because it can clutter your closet and actually you get tired of seeing them on everyone (like the leopard slip skirt). Most of the items on the “out” list were not on my radar. I’m treading lightly with denim purchases because I just can’t see where we’re going with washes and hems. Seems like anything goes in that department, but I do feel a higher rise bootcut coming back. It’s that time of year I sneak some brighter colors in with winter neutrals to get me excited about spring!

  14. I’ll wait and decide. I’m in the older traditional crowd so not sure. Maybe wider leg pants. Our spring is early here.

  15. I’m afraid fashion designers are trying harder every year to think Out Of The Box. And those that follow these crazy trends will look back at pictures and think What Was I Thinking?!
I like that long dresses are still trending. They look cute with  booties, sandals and sneaks Or dress up with heels.

  16. I had to look up “broilersuit” because I hadn’t heard of the term before. I guess I’m not trendy enough. I was cruising through Target with my boys and did see some psychedelic prints, tho. I also appreciate a hit of lace crochet detail, maybe not a whole top. 😉 Fun to see your Spring Trend Projection. I always find it amusing what designers put on the runway because does anyone actually wear those pieces? LOL.

  17. Shoot! Now that I’m used to paring down the contents of my purse, I love my itty bitty crossbodies that never slide off my shoulder and will hang off of my chair, vs sitting on the floor! And, I love the cheaper prices on smaller bags.

    1. There’s always a place for a crossbody. I think a well rounded wardrobe will have some of each.

Huge, oversized bags may be a trend, but I’m more interested in collecting classic bags that will stand the test of time. I didn’t like the itty bitty ones either. So yeah, grain of salt. 🙂

  18. I’ve been seeing a lot of celebs on TV wearing puffy sleeves. We will see if the puffy sleeve trend comes around.

  19. Some of these are so cute.  I’ve always loved polka dots – right there with my love of stripes.  I’m also a fan of bermudas and wide leg pants. I had some great plaid bermudas in the 80s!I’m interested to see some of these styles in store.  Thanks for the round up!

  20. I love long dresses, polka dots, and suit blazers (not so much the whole suit). Loafers are my go-to shoe at the moment too (love the Steve Madden loafer- have it in two colors.)
I’m starting to see more women wearing the tie-waist wide leg pants in my area. I think they’re darling.  I tried a pair from Anthropologie last summer but ended up returning them because they weren’t the right length. I’ll have to try again.

  21. Please don’t sit out the suit trend. Many of us are working in an office and would love some inspiration on this trend. Even if you don’t wear them, some posts for suggested looks you see would be greatly appreciated.

  22. I’m 5’ 1” with long legs and a short waist. Thinking of cropped wide leg pants and puffy sleeves would make me look like an Oompa Loompa!  Thank goodness there are trends for everyone. I’m particularly excited about tie die!

  23. This collection of spring fashions looks promising, love the mix of textures and color. Unfortunately, at 5’2″ and 103 lbs., I look swallowed up in suits, wide-legged pants, large prints and longer dresses with ruffles.
With the help of a personal shopper, I purchased a fashionable but more tailored suit last fall, along with a couple of tops and accessories to make a few different looks. I wore it twice. I felt like I looked too laced up, too prim and proper. I didn’t feel at all fun or fashionable. Where can petite women find help in adapting fashion trends to accommodate their size?

    1. Not being petite, I’m not familiar with the specific struggles, but I know it can be frustrating. I took the Adore Your Wardrobe course a while back, and it was a total game changer for me. It might be more “help” than you want, but it really is well worth the investment – https://bit.ly/AYW2019
