Spring Fashion Try-On Haul

Happy Friday, friends! I’ve got another try-on haul for you today. This one is a smattering of dresses, tops, and jeans; and I found another cute pair of sandals! As if I don’t have enough sandals in my closet… #lifeisshortbuytheshoes

For size reference, I’m 5’5″ and in the 136-139 pounds range lately. I still take a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 or 8 in dresses, and size 8 shoe.

Good American Strong Shoulder Tank

Good American Strong Shoulder Tank // Mother Insider crop chew hem jeans // Dolce Vita Izabel sandals

Strong shoulder tops and muscle tees are trending this spring, and yes, shoulder pads are back!!! I ordered this because I’ve seen several other bloggers feature it, and I was curious.

I didn’t expect to like this silhouette for me because I already have “strong shoulders” along with a rather short neck, and I don’t need to make them look any wider or more bulky.

This top in particular is a little too dramatic for my tastes — it looks a little too much like a Star Trek uniform. But I tried some more subtle takes on this trend below, and you’ll see that they can work if they aren’t quite so dramatic.

Here it is with a front tuck, but it looks even more awkward to me than when it is left out.

I dunno, in a way, it balances out my hips and these flare jeans… I think I’d like it without the shoulder pads.

VERDICT: This one went back, but as I said, I found some similar styles without the shoulder pads that I did keep. Keep reading! (Oh, and it is TTS; I’m in the small.)

Gibsonlook x The Motherchic Ruched Tank Dress

Gibsonlook x The Motherchic tank dress // Dolce Vita Haize Sandal c/o Evereve

This dress just launched yesterday. It’s a Gibson collab with my friend Lindsey at The Motherchic. You can use code MOTHERCHIC15 to get 15% off.

I found the quality to be very good. It’s soft and comfortable, and the skirt part is lined. It’s definitely body-con, and I feel like it runs a tad small. That is not the norm for Gibson products, so bear that in mind. If you tend to run in between sizes, you may want to size up.

VERDICT: Keeping! I can’t wait to throw a jean jacket on top and wear it out to lunch.

CeCe Puff Sleeve Square Neck Blouse

CeCe Puff Sleeve Square Neck Blouse // Good American Good Legs crop skinnies // Dolce Vita Haize Sandals c/o Evereve

I thought this blouse could be cute for church or lunch out with friends. The square neck and puffed sleeve is a big trend right now, and I kind of like it. It’s feminine without baring too much skin.

It comes in quite a few colors, and it runs true to size; I’m wearing the small.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: I’m holding onto this for now, with tags on. I have a lot of black tops, so I want to make sure I’ll wear it before taking the tags off.

WHBM Pointelle Tank

WHBM Pointelle Tank // Good American Good Legs crop skinnies // Steve Madden Honey Slide Sandals

This top caught my eye at White House Black Market when they were having a sale a few weeks ago, and it finally arrived yesterday. It’s just a fun little going-out top, or it would layer easily under a fitted jacket.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

VERDICT: Keeping; it’s a tad on the low-cut side, so I’ll save it for date nights with Paul. 🙂 Although, I did notice that it comes in petite, so maybe I should try that before ripping the tags off.

WHBM Mid-Rise Pret-A-Pedi Crop Pants

WHBM Mid-Rise Pret-A-Pedi Crop Pants // Nordstrom Signature stripe tee (sold out) // Dolce Vita Haize Sandals c/o Evereve

Okay, I’m super excited about these pants. They will fill a hole in my wardrobe that has been bothering me. I had a pair of black crop utility skinny pants two summers ago that I wore a ton, but they were too big last year so I passed them on.

I found these at White House Black Market and snapped them up, and they are exactly what I wanted. A little more elevated than black denim, and the lightweight cotton/rayon/spandex blend is perfect for spring/summer.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

These pants come in regular, tall, and short sizes, and you can also choose a curvy, classic, or petite fit. I’m wearing the classic fit in the size 6 with the regular inseam length.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Definitely keeping!

Evereve Spring Try-Ons

Evereve offered to let me pick out a few outfits from their spring lineup in exchange for sharing, and I’m thrilled because I love their styles.

If you aren’t familiar, Evereve is what I would describe as more of a boutique shopping experience, but they are also online. Their style is very in line with mine, and they curate some really nice pieces, so I was thrilled when they reached out.

Look #1: Tie Dye Muscle Tank with white KUT from the Kloth skinnies and Dolce Vita sandal

Roan + Ryan Aria Tie Dye Muscle Tank c/o  // KUT from the Kloth High Rise Connie Ankle Skinny c/o  // Dolce Vita Haize Sandals c/o

As I said, I did find some muscle tanks without the shoulder pads, and I definitely prefer this take on the trend.

This one in particularly is suuuuuper soft, such nice material, and it has a gathered detail on the shoulder, which is a nice touch. I also love the tie dye pattern. It’s true to size; I have the small.

And these white jeans are the KUT from the Kloth Connie skinnies, which have almost the exact same measurements as the Good American Good Legs crops that I have in black and white… and now blue (see below.)

They’re soft and stretchy, and the white is not see-through. They’re a good value for the price point, and just a nice, versatile pair of white skinnies to have in your summer wardrobe.

These Dolce Vita sandals are also from Evereve. They have that minimalist style that is so on trend at the moment, and I love how they pretty much disappear on the foot.

They have a cushioned footbed and are really nice to walk in, and the low heel gives you the perfect subtle lift. I sized down half, as I typically do in slides. These are the 7.5.

VERDICT: Keeping! Of course, these items were gifted, so I’m definitely not returning, but they are all pieces I’m excited to add to my closet.

Look #2: Slub Button-Up Top with Good American skinnies and Dolce Vita sandals

BOBI Button Down Slub Top c/o // Good American Good Waist Crop Raw Edge c/o // Dolce Vita Haize Sandals c/o

I love a white slub tee with blue jeans and jean shorts for summer, and I thought this long sleeve version would make a really nice transition piece. It’s a little short and boxy, but it works well with high rise jeans.

It’s TTS, but a little tight in the arms, so if you have thicker arms, or if you want a little more length, you may want to size up.

I’m a huge fan of Good American Good Legs crop jeans, and this medium blue color is super versatile. It has a plain raw hem, so you can always cut it if you want them shorter, but the 26″ inseam is the perfect compromise between crop and ankle length for me.

VERDICT: Keeping! Again, while these pieces were gifted, I’m excited to add them to my closet. They are both easy to mix and match and will definitely be in rotation this spring and summer.

Look #3: Black Muscle Tee with Stripe Saturday Skirt and P448 Sneakers

PAIGE DENIM Rowan Jacket c/o // MICHAEL STARS Iris Muscle Tank c/o // SUNDRY Stripe Saturday Skirt c/o // P448 John Sneakers

This denim jacket is extremely soft, and I love the light blue wash. It has a traditional trucker style, but with that amazing Paige quality. I requested the medium, but it’s a little big, and I think the small would fit better.

And I didn’t realize I picked two muscle tees until my order came, but I’m glad to add both to my closet. This plain black one is going to be extra versatile because of the solid color. I wore it with my ivy green Paige Mayslie cargo joggers just yesterday.

This tee is really soft, and it has a relaxed fit and a 24″ length. It’s very similar to the tie dye one above, but it’s a different brand. Michael Stars makes really high quality wardrobe basics, and this one did not disappoint.

I’m also excited about this skirt. As you know, I don’t wear a lot of skirts, but I love how this one has a casual sweatshirt vibe, and it’s very comfortable and looks great with a t-shirt and sneakers.

You’ve seen my P448 sneakers before; I actually ordered them from Evereve when they were on sale earlier in the season. I love these, and I find them very comfortable.

Everything I’m wearing here is true to size — I have the tee and skirt in a small, and the sneakers in the 39.

Light Wash Premium Denim Try-Ons

rag & bone Cate ankle skinny raw-hem jeans in Harper wash

rag & bone Cate ankle skinny raw-hem jeans in Harper wash // BOBI Button Down Slub Top c/o Evereve // Dolce Vita Izabel sandals

I was wanting a pair of lighter wash jeans, and I ordered a few pairs during the Shopbop and Saks sales a few weeks back. I’m already a fan of the rag & bone Cate, and I was drawn to this wash and also the chewed hem and 27″ inseam.

I do love the wash, and the overall aesthetic, but I’m not sure I want to add more skinnies to my closet at the moment. If you do, Saks is currently doing a spend more, save more promo, and these are included.

VERDICT: I’m not sure if it’s the few extra pounds I’ve been carrying lately, or if this pair just runs small, but they feel really tight and I’m not 100% sure about them. I think I may want a straighter style.

AG Farrah Skinny Ankle Jeans in 19 Years Elevation

AG Farrah Skinny Ankle Jeans in 19 Years Elevation // BOBI Button Down Slub Top c/o Evereve // Dolce Vita Izabel sandals

I also ordered these when they were 25% off during the Shopbop sale, wanting a lighter blue wash. I love the AG Farrahs, but these are a little longer than I want at the moment. Of course, I can cut them, but it just seems a shame since they look so nice this way, and they really are a flattering length.

VERDICT: The wash is perfection, and I love how soft and comfortable they are, but again, I think I’d rather have a straighter style. Shopbop only allows 15 days for returns before charging you, so I went ahead and sent them back. If I regret it, I can re-order the next time I see them on sale.

AGOLDE Toni in Precipice

AGOLDE Toni in Precipice // BOBI Button Down Slub Top c/o Evereve // Dolce Vita Izabel sandals

These were also from the Shopbop sale, and they’re the ones I kept. I love the wash, and I really prefer the straighter leg and shorter inseam for this season.

VERDICT: Keeping! These are true to size, or size down if in between. They fit perfectly in my usual size 28, but they do stretch a little with wear.

Old Navy Try-Ons

Old Navy Mid-Rise Boyfriend Straight Cut-Off Jeans

Old Navy Mid-Rise Boyfriend Straight Cut-Off Jeans // Treasure & Bond Twist Detail T-Shirt // Sam Edelman Geraldine Embellished Slide Sandals

In an attempt to find some lower priced jeans to recommend, I tried these, and I really like them! If you like a darker wash, these have a nice modern straight crop fit, and they’re very comfortable.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

The rear view is pretty good too — the pockets are a nice size and well-placed, and the leg hangs straight without adding a lot of visual weight.

VERDICT: I’m holding onto these for now. I tend to reach for my premium denim when I’m dressing for my daily life, but I may want to style these for the blog.

Old Navy High-Waisted O.G. Straight Light-Wash Ripped Jeans

Old Navy High-Waisted O.G. Straight Light-Wash Ripped Jeans // Treasure & Bond Twist Detail T-Shirt // P448 John Sneakers

For Old Navy, these are actually really impressive. I think they look a lot like some of the rag & bone that I’ve tried. They’re soft and comfy, and very much on trend with all of the 90s vibes.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

All that said, these are a little too rugged for my personal taste. I don’t mind the rips and abrasions on my Mother Insiders, but on these, along with the longer length and straight cut, it all feels a bit much. My 15-year-old actually wants me to order them in her size, if that tells you anything, lol…

VERDICT: I returned these, but if you like the looks of them, I would recommend trying them. They’re very comfortable.

Old Navy Loose Specially Dyed Easy Tee

Old Navy Loose Specially Dyed Easy Tee // Good American Good Legs crop skinnies // Dolce Vita Izabel sandals

I usually find some good, affordable summer tops at Old Navy, and this pink tie dye tee caught my eye. The material is on the thicker side, and it’s very soft.

It’s on the shorter end of the spectrum, but not cropped. It has a drop shoulder and a subtle curved hemline, which are nice details, but it’s kind of boxy. It’s TTS; I’m in the small.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: I hung this top in my closet, thinking I might throw it on with shorts for casual days at home this summer. I need to decide pretty quickly if it’s a keeper or not b/c my 45 days is almost up.

LOFT Try-Ons

LOFT Clip V-Neck Shirt

LOFT Clip V-Neck Shirt // Good American Good Legs crop skinnies // Dolce Vita Paily sandals (restocked!)

This top caught my eye in the white, but I ordered both white and coral, and when it came in, I ended up trying on the coral. It obviously could use an iron, but it’s a cute top.

I tried tying it as they do on the website, but I generally find it awkward to wear a top this way because it’s going to ride up, and no one wants to see that.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: It’s a cute top, and it looks fine untucked in these pictures, but in person it seemed kind of stiff and voluminous. I know I won’t reach for it, so it’s going back. It’s TTS; I’m in the small.

LOFT Floral Side Tie Henley Swing Dress

LOFT Floral Side Tie Henley Swing Dress // Dolce Vita Haize Sandal c/o Evereve

Want to see me gain 10 pounds? Put me in a swing dress. LOL!

Yeah, this babydoll/swing dress trend is one I’ll be sitting out, but if you’re smaller on top, you may like this style.

VERDICT: Returning. ‘Nuff said.

Try-On Haul: Spring Event Dresses

I’ve been ordering dresses like it’s my job… okay, well, it is my job. But anyway, I wanted to do a post on spring event dresses with Nordstrom, so I’ve been ordering a bunch, and they sell out as soon as I get them. It’s so frustrating.

I’m going to share them here, but not all of them are in stock at the moment. If you like one, maybe you can find it somewhere else, or there is always the chance of restocks.

Draper James Love Circle Floral Fit & Flare Dress

Draper James Love Circle Floral Fit & Flare Dress // Stuart Weitzman wedge sandals (old)

This dress is super cute, but I am wearing the size 6, and I really need the 8. The quality is fantastic, and I think the fit and flare style is really flattering.

VERDICT: Returned; too small.

Adrianna Papell Floral Print Ruffle Midi Dress

Adrianna Papell Floral Print Ruffle Midi Dress // Dolce Vita Paily sandals (restocked!)

I think this dress is beautiful. In this case, I’m wearing the 8, and I almost think I could wear the 6. It’s hard to say for sure without trying it, but if I were to keep this, I would at least have it altered and pulled up a bit in the shoulders.

[flex_row]  [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Returned; I don’t need it, and I’d need to alter it or size down.

Adrianna Papell Floral Sleeveless Dress

Adrianna Papell Floral Sleeveless Dress // Dolce Vita Paily sandals (restocked!)

This dress is also really pretty, but I’m not a huge fan of that high neck. I prefer a more open neckline on me personally.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

This one fits well in the size 8, but I’d be curious to try the 6 because I had to really cinch the waist. I tend to run in between 6 and 8 in dresses, and I’m right in between on these Adrianna Papell styles, so I’d say they’re TTS.

VERDICT: Returned; not my favorite style.

Eliza J Surplice Print Jersey Faux Wrap Dress

Eliza J Surplice Print Jersey Faux Wrap Dress // Dolce Vita Haize Sandal c/o Evereve

This dress looks rather matronly to me; maybe it’s the print or the flat sandals, I’m not sure, but I’m not loving this one. But then again, I’ve never been a huge fan of wrap styles.

For reference, it’s a size 8, which is my usual size in Eliza J, so I’d say it runs TTS. But if you wear a 6 at stores like LOFT and Ann Taylor, then size up one.

[flex_row][/flex_row]

VERDICT: Returning; not excited about this one.

Eliza J Geo Print Sheath Dress

Eliza J Geo Print Sheath Dress // Jeffrey Campbell Mr. Big Slide

This dress caught my eye because I’ve had styles like this in the past that I liked. But now that I see it on, that’s exactly why I don’t like it. It just looks dated to me, and this one doesn’t fit me particularly well.

I’d like it better if it had more structure through the waist, but it is a shift, after all. If you need work wear, this could be a nice option, but I can’t really get excited about it for events this spring.

[flex_row] [/flex_row]

VERDICT: Returning; don’t love it.

Connected Apparel Floral Sleeveless Handkerchief Hem Midi Dress

Connected Apparel Floral Sleeveless Handkerchief Hem Midi Dress // Jeffrey Campbell Jamm-3 Slide Sandals (more here)

Let’s end on a high note! This dress is probably my favorite of the bunch. I ordered it in the 8, and it was way too big, so I re-ordered in the 6, and it just came in.

I like everything about it, except it does need to be taken up in the shoulders. I was able to keep it in place for these pictures, but it slides around and definitely dips too low as I move about.

Otherwise, it’s really feminine and pretty, and I like the color palette a lot. I tried it with black sandals, but I think it looks better with something closer to my skin tone so the dress can really shine.

If you have a wedding or bridal shower to attend this summer, grab this dress. It’s a great price, so pretty, and as of right now, it’s still in stock!

VERDICT: Keeping and getting it tailored.

  1. Thanks for the review of the WHBM pants! I’m going to try them. Will definitely fill a hole in my closet. too!

  2. Loved seeing all these clothes – I just pulled out all my winter clothes from the closet this week – I kept a few medium weight sweaters out for really cold air conditioning places in case. However I’m so ready for spring. We’ve actually had 2 days of 90 degrees, stopping to mid 70’s – but I’ll take it. Beats cold.

I’ve decided to retire at the end of May. I’m ready to be out of the every day work force. I’ve worked since age 14 – so now at 68, I’m ready to not work every day. But I am concerned about what will I do with myself after a few months. But I’m sure I’ll be fine. All that said to say my wardrobe can be more casual now so I’ve been getting some really comfy clothes & more things to relax in.

Have a great lunch with your friends!!

  3. I live in Ontario Canada and we are in another lockdown. It’s too cold to wear anything that is springlike. Still wearing pullover sweaters and long pants here. Lots of rain too so it’s hard to even get a walk in. We are helping facilitate virtual learning for two grandsons as the schools are closed. So enjoy your freedom. We are all bored and tired of being in lockdown. No stores open except for essential. ( food, drugstores, etc) even closed g9f courses. Only place in the world that has closed down golf courses. Enjoy your spring clothes and moreover the chance to wear them out.

    1. Hey Carol, I am so sorry to hear that. I know things in Canada are pretty rough right now, and with the weather you describe on top of that, I’d be going insane. I always feel a bit weird putting it out there everything I’m doing, knowing that others are in such tight lockdowns. Your grandchildren are fortunate to have you. Hang in there. This has to get better. xo

  4. Always love your try ons, you put in so much detail! I have always found luck with old navy jeans and they are a great price point. I even cut the hem on a pair because I’m not out a bunch of money if I mess up but thanks to your tutorial I think they turned out great. Can I ask what the OG means ? I’ve been trying to figure that out 🤷‍♀️. I’m planning on cutting the hem on a white pair of jeans too( not old navy) it’s a cute summer look. Enjoy your lunch date. Rain here today and tomorrow then back to sun on Sunday . We had a beautiful week so can’t complain. Glad the comments is working again 😀

    1. OG = Original Gangster but it is used these days as a slang for original. So these are the original 90s jeans. I’m an OG blogger – one of the first. 🙂 But my kids tell me I’m never allowed to use that term. Evidently I’m not cool enough. 😉

  5. Always love the try-one! Evereve is one of my very favorite stores. You may want to change where you bought your P448s from Everlane to Evereve. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Love love love that last dress! My nephew is getting married on the 8th and I haven’t found a dress so I’ve gone with other options. According to Nordstrom it would be iffy time wise on delivery plus we leave Friday. I’m afraid the porch pirates would get it. But I think it’s my fav of the bunch. Drat!

  7. Love the try on posts.
The WHBM black pants are sold out in my size. Darn! They are so cute.
Love the Agolde Toni in Precipe but not sure I need them. Finally, my favorite dress on you is the AP Floral Sleeveless one with the high neck.

I’m in the market for top to wear with white jeans, denim shorts, and light wash jeans. The higher rises make it impossible for me to tuck or half tuck so I need shirts that fit well. Considering the Everlane Sweater.

  8. If you had to pick one Elemis product to start, what would it be?
I thought the shift dress really cute if the waist was nipped in a bit. Throw a Jean jacket over it and go.

        1. And you registered? Argh. I just tested it out and didn’t get an email reply either. I am so at the end of my rope with this situation. I will have to talk to my tech team again on Monday.

  9. Great Try-on. I loved the Draper James dress, didn’t realize Nordstom carried some of the line. I have purchased several items right from their website (on sale) and have loved the quality and service. Will need to check out more DJ at Nordstroms. The muscle t-shirts are a little “odd”! But I do like the extra coverage at the shoulder if it’s not TOO puffy! The tie dye one is really nice!!

  10. You definitely tried on some nice things. I hope that you keep the top from ON! I am so glad that I purchased it and I think it looks like you. The sheath is a beautiful dress and I also like the one you kept. I’m glad that the meds have already helped Savannah feel better. Enjoy the rest of your day!

  11. I wondered, if you ever tried that tee (with the ties) over the Gibson dress, would you get the same look as the striped skirt and tee. Just a different idea.

  12. I don’t care for the muscle t style. Don’t like shoulder pads either. Some cute things you styled today. Lots of work on your part. Not sure how you get it all done. :). I really am struggling with the new jean styles. Can’t find right length crop on me etc etc. I like my skinnies but now my eye is going more toward the wider leg etc. so weird how that works. I still like you in the skinnies you styled today.

  13. I just wanted to comment on how thin you look! When you wrote that you’d gained extra pounds I thought “no way”…. 😊My biggest frustration right now is the shorter inseams on denim! Mother used to be my go-to but all the “ankle” length is now 26” and at 5’9” that hits me mid-calf and look like the outdated Capri pants. I’ve tried several new pairs through your links and had to return. Let me know if you find any inseams of 28” for cropped or 33” for flares. I’m especially looking for a pair of white denim, full length straight or straight cropped, raw hem….

      1. I hear you! I’m struggling with the menopause weight gain …..I’m exercising everyday and eat healthy and yet the scale is still up 7-8 pounds higher from prior to pandemic. Ugh!

Those white jeans look perfect except the rise says 12” and although I’m tall, I’m actually short waisted (I have long legs)….so my sweet spot is
        9 1/2 – 10 1/2 for high rise.
Can you share your shopping link to JCrew? They have a pair that comes in tall I’m thinking of trying.
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!

  14. Does the Saturday drawing still happen once a month? If so, which Saturday and where do we find the person’s name (or maybe you just email that person)? Thanks! Just ordered the Cece blouse.

  15. Jo-Lynne, this is a great try-on haul. I really like the black WHBM crop pants and the AGOLDE Toni in Precipice. Thanks for sharing them.

  16. Did you feel like the black square neck and back blouse covered your bra straps in the back consistently? It seems wider in the back than the front.

  17. I just bought the Evereve muscle tank Monday morning. Before I read this email. Ugh, I’m sorry!

  18. I bought the last dress that you styled. I need to wear a light jacket or shrug and am wondering what you would suggest- color, style, length?

    1. If you can get away with a thin wrap, something like this would look nice: https://shopstyle.it/l/bulVC. You could go with the black or the pink chintz. Or this is a bit more material: https://shopstyle.it/l/bulT1. I actually have both of these, my daughter and I each wore one to an October wedding. I’d probably go with pink.

The other option is a shrug or cropped linen cardigan: https://shopstyle.it/l/bulVt. That really isn’t ideal, though. It’s not quite dressy enough. Honestly, I struggle with this, myself. There aren’t a lot of good options. I’d try to go the wrap route, even if you need something a bit heavier than the one above.
