Spring Transition Style with Lord & Taylor

This time of year, it’s hard to know if we should be shopping for cold-weather styles that we can only wear for a few more weeks and then put away for next year, or if we should start buying warm-weather pieces that we have to wait to wear until the weather decides to cooperate.

My answer? Both and yes!

Right now, I’m buying things I can incorporate into my winter wardrobe as the weather allows and continue wearing into spring. We tend to be up and down this time of year — it can snow one week and be 60 degrees the next — so I like to buy classic layering pieces that can go either way.

This Bobeau dolman sleeve cardigan from Lord & Taylor is the perfect example.

I absolutely love this piece. It has such a nice drape to it and a pretty slub texture, and the relaxed pockets keep it feeling light and laid-back.

We’ve talked about adding juxtaposition to an outfit to create interest, and I think this cardigan does that by combining a dressier fabric with a relaxed-casual style.

I wore this cardigan over a white tank and paired them with skinny jeans in a medium indigo wash.

These jeans are BlankNYC, and they’re a great price point. I really like the wash — it is perfect for pairing with navy because it provides some contrast between the two shades of blue.

The loafers keep the look more spring-like, but you could also wear booties if it’s still chilly in your area. This is the clay color and it is so versatile.

These are really comfortable too, but I recommend sizing up a half size from your normal. I usually wear an 8 or 8.5 in ballet flats, and I had to go up to a 9 in these to accommodate the pointy toe.

I accessorized with this silver twisted cuff bracelet and agate pendant with gunmetal accents. I like how they both have a casual look about them that work well with this look.

And isn’t this stripe stitch tote a fun addition to the outfit!?!

I love the texture for spring and summer, but with this color combo, you can definitely start carrying it now.

In my series on transition style last week, I mentioned incorporating lighter layers into our pre-spring looks, and this hooded trench is the perfect coat for those of us in areas of the country that are still holding onto the cold weather.

It’s heavier than a typical trench and has a light fleece lining that really does add warmth. The day we shot this look, it was freezing outside, and I was so happy to put this coat on! It’s warmer than it looks.

The details are really pretty, and it has a flattering cut to it. I also love that it has a removable hood. I’m not one to futz with an umbrella, so I almost always buy coats with hoods.

This coat runs true to size, or if in between, you probably want to size up.

I’m wearing the small, and it was a bit snug when zipped. I think a medium would be more comfortable and allow for a thicker sweater underneath.

It’s a nice length too — the shorter style has a more casual vibe than a traditional knee-length trench. It also comes in black and pink, and it’s a great price!

This outfit is comprised of so many great basics that you can start wearing now and mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe as we head into springtime.

I will totally keep this cardigan in my closet all through the summer — it’s a super cute addition to shorts and skirt outfits, and it would also look great over a casual sundress.

The jeans and suede loafers can be worn all year-round, or at least three seasons of the year, and the bag is so fun for spring and summer. I also love how the statement necklace adds a focal point and breaks up the solid colors in the outfit.

  1. Cute outfit from head to toe. I don’t normally wear blue but I like how you have been incorporating into spring. And I do really need to get away from grey and black soon. Here’s a question for your next FB live: Is it okay to wear two denim pieces together? I’ve noticed a few people wearing a demin or chambray shirt with jeans. I thought this use to be taboo? Also is it okay to return jeans that bagged out only after a few hours of wearing them? I just bought some Old Navy white jeans with Lycra and even sized down and after 2 hrs they were falling. I think I’m done with Old Navy jeans😟 but they always come in petite so I end up always trying again

    1. Try American Eagle Jeans, most styles come in short (petite) and x short, even shorter. I’m 5’1”” and the short works very well for me usually.

  2. Me too. I try to buy things this time of year that can pull double duty. I love that tote and necklace, really cute. I have a stone colored trench that similar to yours and it’s the one I always turn to. It goes with everything.

  3. Hi Jo-Lynne!  I’m really enjoying the Adore Your Wardrobe class, which I never would have known about if I wasn’t following your blog.  It has been a real eye opener!  One of the things that I have learned about my body type is that I need to wear some shorter necklaces to bring more attention “up”.  I love your big monogrammed necklace and think that could be a great addition to my jewelry.  Do you mind to link to it again and tell me what size you have?  I’m unsure how big I really want it, but I don’t want it to be too small.  Yours looks like a really good size.  Thank you!
PS – Really like this look on you!

  4. This is a great transitional outfit.  And you look so nice and comfortable in it.  Boy, you had a busy day yesterday.  This week we are having highs in the upper 60’s/low 70’s, then starting Monday the highs will be back in the upper 40’s/low 50’s.  One day I think I can change out my clothes, then the next I’m wearing my warm pieces.  So crazy!  Have a fabulous day!

    1. Yeah, it’s been back and forth a bit here too, but nothing that warm. Of course, it’s Philly, not Atlanta. 🙂 I usually wait till April to change out my clothes, but I do start putting away the heaviest things if March is mild.

  5. I don’t usually comment or “bite” on many clothing items, but as soon as I saw those jeans on you , I knew I had to have a pair. Hope they run true to size because I already placed my order. Thanks Jo-Lynne. I really love this look.

  6. Your purse is a winner! You could carry that with so many outfits and through seasons. I’m constantly changing up my purses to go with outfits.
I like a coat with a hood for the same reason. It’s so easy to pop over your head. A fleece lining sounds so cozy.

  7. That trench is really nice. I like that it’s single breasted and a bit shorter than some. It’s also a great price for that brand. And the tote is adorable.

I noticed that store has Free Shipping today only. That’s a nice perk!

  8. So I wake up this morning to -26 degrees Celsius with the windchill yuck… it’s now warmed up to -17 yay I’m so ready for spring. I went to the mall today just to see some stuff coming in but with it being so cold it was hard to imagine lol… my imagination is good but not that good.I Really like that coat. I have to update mine, and it’s a nice color:)

  9. Another cute outfit! I’m so leery of lower price jeans because they don’t keep their shape after wearing for not very long. Do these keep their shape?

  10. Please keep us posted on your contact lense experience. I am going through th exact same situation and i’m On my 3rd pair of multi focal-type trials.

    1. Well, I learned that different brands of contacts can actually change how well you see, even if they’re all the same script. I didn’t realize that. I am trying the monthlies now, instead of dailies, because they’re thicker and may not settle into my astigmatism so much? I dunno… I do think I see better with them.
