Striped Ballet-Back Tee & Denim Lace-Up Flats

Happy Saturday, friends! I’m happy to report that my husband was able to get home last night despite our crazy March weather. His flight from Minneapolis was only delayed about 30 minutes, so that was a relief. It’s nice to have our whole family under one roof again.

Today I’m styling a simple navy and white outfit with a ballet-back tee and denim lace-up flats.

You know how much I love my denim, so when I heard denim shoes were trending this spring, I knew I’d be jumping on that bandwagon.

These flats are by Sam Edelman, and they have the same sole as the Felicia Flats that everyone loves. They are soooooo comfortable, soft, and plush. They’re like walking on clouds. I love how they updated their basic ballet flat with the lace-up style.

These also come in a gorgeous nude suede for spring, as well as a black suede, but those look more wintry to me. There was a fun pink suede too, but it sold out. I saw a size 8 pop back up this morning, so if you see your size and like them, grab them while you can. They run true to size. I have the 8.5, which is the same as I wear in the Felicia Flats and other Sam Edelman flats and pumps. Also, these are on sale for $69.

I cuffed my white skinnies so you can see the lace-up detail on the shoes, and to give them a more cropped spring and summer look. These laces look like they might not stay tied, but I didn’t have a problem with them.

SALE ALERT >> 15% of all pants & shorts at Old Navy + 30% off the rest of your order with code ENJOY. Ends 3/11/17 at 11:59 pm ET.

I think this striped top from Old Navy is so cute. I love the elbow-length sleeves and ballet back. Unfortunately we didn’t get a picture of the back. I cannot believe I forgot, as that really is the point of the shirt. Trust me, it’s cute!

It comes in several different colors of solids and stripes, and the material is a nice cotton/modal mix with a little bit of spandex. Best of all, it’s only $10 after you get your 30% off.

By the way, that 30% off also applies to the cute shift dress I styled yesterday and the t-shirt dress I linked to as well. For size reference, I have a medium in both dresses, but a small in this top.

This cognac crossbody is from Target, and it’s a great size and shape. Plus I have to say, I’m impressed with how far they’ve come with faux leather these days. I’m not sure I’d be able to tell the difference if I didn’t already know.

I also really like the usability of this bag. I has a pocket on the back you can easily slide your phone into, and then when you lift the flap on the front, there’s a lot of space, plus another pocket which, again, is a nice slot for your phone if you prefer to have it inside. It comes in several other color options, and it’s only $29.

My nail polish is a combination of two CND Shellacs: it’s one coat of Romantique over top of one coat Cake Pop. I go back to this combo time and time again. It’s feminine and pretty, but neutral enough that it goes with everything.

I accessorized with my gold monogram necklace and a stack of Alex and Ani bangles. I like how the monogram necklace stands out on the striped top and breaks up the front a little bit.

  1. Nice outfit. I have seen that top at ON online and wanted to order it but always worried there would be back bra strap issues. What do you think?

    1. My band doesn’t show at all – the scoop isn’t that low, but the straps do peek out sometimes as I move around. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but if you have a bra with wider-set straps, that would be ideal.

  2. I love the weather report you give at the beginning of your blog! So glad your husband made it home, I was wondering how he’d make out. I just put The Weather Channel on – did you see the forecast?? Yikes! Can you say major N’orester?? All of a sudden we are in the graphics that are pink and you’re in the purple! W.O.W…….yesterday here in the north Pocono area, we got close to a foot. The local weather people were waaaaay off on their forecast.

Your outfit is so stunning & classic. I’ve been eyeing up your monogram necklace. And since I have a birthday coming up…….hmmm. Just might be something I’ll mention! I have the basic elements of your outfit so I’ll be pinning this look for sure! Love those shoes as well! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us! Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Me thinks it’s the calm before the storm!

    1. Yes, I’ve seen the forecast. I never depend on good weather in March, and it didn’t use to bother me when it would snow because I learned to expect it up here, but now that I’m supposed to be taking spring outfit pictures, it really gets on my last nerve. One of my good friends is from the Poconos and has family there, and she’s always talking about how much more snow y’all have up there than we do here. She’s supposed to go up this weekend, I think. Hope she gets home before the storm. It looks nasty.

    2. I have been eyeing that necklace too!! What size is the actual monogram Jo-Lynne? The chain size? I think it would look stunning with an off the shoulder top too? What do you think? The ballet flats are my new spring purchase. What other stylenol shirt would you wear with them? I have a 50th birthday celebration I am attending tonight and I need inspiration! Lol

      1. I forgot to mention my lace up ballet flats are taupe. How would a navy cold shoulder 3/4 sleeve shirt with white destroyed jeans look with them?

  3. I love that your shoes are denim. We got a pair of denim sandals for Nancy (the 60’s model on my blog) last summer, so it’ll be nice to know they are still stylish!!
This outfit is truly one of those that is ageless, Jo-Lynne. It’s almost that french chic look!!
I’m so glad your husband got home safe—I’m such a wreck when Rob is travelling –I always imagine the worst!

  4. Did you buy your regular size in this shirt? After reading the reviews I was even more unsure because some said they sized up and some said they sized down. Haha!!

    1. I think it is true to size. I ordered both medium and small, and because it is stretchy, I tried the medium on first, thinking I’d need the bigger size. It looked fine, but I tried the small on out of curiosity, and it fit even better! LOL! So I think the reason the reviews are mixed is b/c you can kind of go either way.

  5. Love this! You can never go wrong with white jeans and a blue top for spring or summer. The necklace is the perfect touch too. Have you had any issues with it tarnishing? Just curious what you use to clean it.

    1. I have noticed it getting discolored, but I use one of my jewelry bags to polish it off before I put it on, and it’s been fine. That’s the main reason I went with gold over silver – I knew the silver would tarnish easier.

      1. Okay, thanks. As careful as I have tried to be with mine, it is still very tarnished and doesn’t come off with a jewelry cloth. I emailed them and all they will recommend is the cleaning kit they sell, so I was just curious about your experience.

  6. Looks like a great spring outfit. I just bought white jeans from Lucky and I love stripes. To be honest, I’m not a fan of the lace-up shoes. I know it’s a trend so maybe they will grow on me.

  7. Love the classic navy blue stripes with white jeans . Oh, and those flats…you look amazing!!
As I looked around the stores yesterday, they have very good clearance prices on winter items; which items would you predict will carry over next winter season (boots, booties, tops, bottoms, accessories). I would love to invest on some pricier items knowing that they’ll still be wearable, not outdated. Thoughts? Maybe a combo blog (w Cindy) mentions?

    1. Hm, that’s a good question. I’m more of a trend follower than a trend setter, so it’s hard to say, but I’m going to bet that booties will still be big next season. I’m not sure how the over the knee boot and tall boots are going to go. The block heel will likely carry through b/c it is newer. I am not sure about the cold shoulder trend – it’s had 2 years already. More layering of delicate accessories is probably going to stick around (as opposed to big statement pieces.) Hobos, totes, satchels and classic handbags are always a good clearance buy. And sweaters, particularly cashmere – this is the time of year to buy those!

  8. I’m glad you gave a link to those Old Navy white skinny jeans. I bought those exact jeans recently and I love them! They are well made, true to size, and not see through. I like that they come in regular, short and long sizes, as I wear size 6 short. They are mid-rise, sit just below the waist in the front but higher in the back, so they won’t slip down.

If you want to try a true skinny jean, but not make a big investment, these could be for you.

  9. I bought a cross body bag in that same color yesterday. Can you tell me what colors it looks best paired with? I had on an olive coat but didn’t think they were complimentary.

    1. Are you talking cognac? It pretty much goes with everything. In fact, if I could only have one color bag, I would choose cognac or a mid-tone grey. I do particularly like it with denim and white and cool tones, though. It looks good against greens, teal, blues, etc. It works well with black, even. I prefer grey with pinks and corals, for some reason, but cognac goes with anything.

      1. Yes, it’s cognac. It’s very similar to your bag. I love the color but was unsure what to pair it with. Now I know.

  10. I have just begun following you and would love your suggestions for pink jeans. I found the dark pink from Old Navy post but would rather have other choices. Thank you. So enjoy reading your blog!
