Striped Midi Dress Outfit for Spring/Summer

I’ve had some requests for alternatives to shorts, so I’ve been trying to keep an eye out for cute, casual dresses that fit the bill.

I do love my shorts, but as the years keep ticking by, I find more and more occasions where I feel more comfortable in a casual dress or skirt than in shorts. This striped midi dress from Banana Republic is the perfect solution, and it’s 50% off today!

You may remember it from a try-on haul a few weeks ago. The column cut, high crewneck, and midi length create such a long, lean look.

It’s made of a nice, thick material, very stretchy, but not too clingy.

I really like the longer length for a change, and the side slits are flattering without being cut too high. For size reference, I’m wearing a small.

Of course I had to throw a denim jacket on top!

I often get cold indoors in the a/c and sometimes summer nights can get chilly as well, so I like to bring along a denim jacket to throw on top of my casual dresses.

White denim is the perfect complement to this navy and white dress, but a mid-wash or light blue denim would be fun too.

I wore this dress two ways — first with white sneakers for a dressed-down casual look, and then I also styled it with wedge sandals for a look that’s a little more polished.

These sandals are really comfortable and easy to walk in, and they come in a bunch of great colors.

I like the brown with the navy and white; it warms it up a bit. In fact, I’ll probably switch to my cognac handbag when I wear these shoes for more of that warm contrast.

If you prefer a dress with sleeves, Banana Republic also has this ribbed t-shirt dress made of the same material. I’ve tried it on, and it fits just as nicely, and it’s also 50% off today!

This is the perfect elevated casual look for spring get-togethers, and you can swap out the sandals for sneakers for the ball field or running errands around town.

  1. Love this look. A great alternative to shorts for sure. I find myself reaching for dresses more as well, depending on the occasion. I think the cognac purse will look great. That would be my choice. Have a great day 😀

2. I really like this midi dress, and you look great in it!  Thank you for sharing options for those of us that don’t wear shorts when we are out and about.  My challenge is finding midi or maxi dresses with short sleeves, to cover my upper arms.  I ordered one from Kohl’s along with a maxi skirt to wear with a couple of tops in my closet, so I’m hoping they will fit and that I like them.  Boy, you have a full day ahead of you.  Good luck with everything!  😎

    1. At a friend’s recommendation, I looked at QVC online.  I found the cutest, black maxi with sleeves!  I’ve received many compliments on it already.  It’s worth a look and the price was great.

  3. Such a cute dress and I have several stripped dresses because they are so versatile for spring and summer. Thanks for showing the Instagram pic as I am still learning how to use it 🙄

  4. You’ve posted these sneakers quite a bit. Can you tell me why you love them and about the brand itself?

    1. Oh, and also, I just re-read my review of them and remembered this: Veja is a French-born shoe company that combines fair trade and ecology. They use organic or recycled and fairly traded materials, and all products are made in a high standard factory in Brazil. I know I’m not exactly the poster child for ethical fashion 🙂 but I do like to support brands like this when I can.

  5. Hi! I really like the look of the jean jacket, but when I’ve tried them on they are too boxy on me. The material is too stiff and I would prefer something that creates some curves. I usually go with a cardigan but was wondering if you’ve seen any that are more fitted. I saw the Lee brand had some darts but they were sold out in my size in white. I did get the pale pink faux suede Moto jacket that you featured a while back and I really like it, thanks!

  6. I look for your Post every morning. The “stats” you listed today are really good I think. I took my car in this morning for 100,000 mile service! The striped dress is similar to one that I have and I can’t wait for summer to wear it! I like the earrings you modeled with it. I have similar pair from Macy’s that I bought through your blog. I feel so put together every day after seeing what you have going on! My style is so similar and you give me so many ideas. I can shop my closet & look good every day which is more than half the battle! I have a lot more confidence!

    1. I was wondering what you meant by “stats” and I looked at my email and I realized you meant my Instagram screenshot. I was trying to show where the Highlight Real is, but I guess it did show my stats too. Mine are actually pretty paltry compared to most fashion bloggers on IG, but I have a pretty engaged community over there and I love that. 🙂

I’m so glad to hear my blog has helped you shop your closet and feel more confident.😍

  7. Bought the dress…ordered the sandals. A perfect outfit to wear to my school office! Banana Republic also had a lovely long sleeve, linen sweater (40% off) in the softest pink that I’ll be wearing all spring . Thank You JO-LYNNE! and have a Happy Easter!

  8. Just wanted to leave a quick note of thank you. I’ve only been following since last July but my wardrobe has improved dramatically thanks to your suggestions. After seeing your try ons lately with the Soludos sandals I ordered a pair which arrived today and I’ve already worn them out to the shops. They are great, but I did need to size up. Also I love the NYDJ Briella Bermuda shorts at Bloomies that you were asking for a “Yes” or “No” on. Big Yes for me, so comfortable and they seem more tapered than most. I’ve ordered them in 3 colors.
