Striped Poncho with Low-Heel Booties

I’m a sucker for a poncho, and LOFT never disappoints. This flowy Striped Poncho Sweater is cute and cozy, and it has all my favorite fall colors. The second I saw it on the LOFT website, I knew it was begging to be paired with these plum skinny jeans. It’s selling fast, as it is currently marked 40% off.

This sweater is seriously so soft and cozy, and I like how it is sewn together under the arms so it stays in place. I layered it over one of my WHBM layering tees. I have this tee in grey and ecru, but I chose the ecru for this outfit because I liked the contrast against the grey background of the sweater.

Here’s a look at the back. I bought the Medium because they were out of the XS/S at the time, but I think I could have gone with the smaller size because it’s quite voluminous. It’s supposed to be oversized, though, so I think it works.

I generally don’t like ponchos that are cut straight across the front, but this one drapes nicely, and the cut works well with the horizontal stripes.

My aubergine skinnies were a Nordstrom Anniversary Sale purchase, and I’m finally getting to wear them now that fall weather has officially arrived! They pair beautifully with this poncho, but they also go with so many of the other neutral sweaters in my closet. They look great with black, grey, beige, and ivory.

The luxurious VANELi Beatriz ankle boots are leather lined, and the double zippers add ease of entry as well as great style!

I also like how the sweater has a wide boat neck — it’s more flattering than a turtleneck, and it keeps you from overheating if the weather isn’t super cold. Of course, if you want the warmth of a turtleneck, you can always layer one underneath.

The VANELi Beatriz suede booties were gifted by Marmi Shoes, and the are the perfect bookend to this outfit. I love how they draw the eye down and then back up to the grey in the sweater.

The lower shaft is nice becasue it creates a longer leg line than a taller bootie, and with a long sweater like this, you want as much leg showing as possible to keep the proper balance.

These shoes are lined with leather, so they are incredibly soft and luxurious inside. I didn’t wear socks with them, but I will when it gets colder. The low heel is also nice for a change. I love the look of a higher heel, but this is more practical for casual events. I wore this outfit to our ladies’ bible study on Saturday.

I accessorized with silver. This long charm necklace was gifted from White House Black Market. It is no longer online, but this one is similar. I like the super long style with this poncho. With the horizontal stripes in the sweater, I wanted something long like this to draw the eye in and down.

I'm styling this cozy striped poncho over a long-sleeve tee with plum skinnies and grey VANELi booties -- the low shaft helps elongate the leg!

Finally, I carried a grey crossbody that blends in with the outfit so as to not draw attention away from the sweater. Since mine is sold out, I’ve been linking to this Nylon Swingpack.

I’ve had some people who are taking the Adore Your Wardrobe course that I recommended email and ask me how I reconcile ponchos and leggings with the AYW guidelines. (Not that I’m wearing leggings here, but you could totally wear them with this – it would be the same effect.) I definitely take what I learned in the course into consideration when I’m styling these pieces, but I know that this outfit is definitely not as flattering as one that flatters my curves and creates an hourglass silhouette. I still like the look for something different.

As far as leggings go, I’ve never really loved them. I’d rather wear skinny jeans with a poncho or tunic, but that’s my personal preference. When I do wear leggings, I wear tall boots to help balance out a more voluminous top half.

  1. Jo-Lynne—I’m in love with this outfit!!
The burgundy jeans make it so special. And I like how your jeans flow into your ankle boots—you could easily wear them when it gets really cold out!!
I only have one poncho, and i’ve been forgetting to wear it!
I love the stripes on this one—-great buy!!

  2. Cute Cute outfit! Tell your daughter I love her freckles!! I know she probably doesn’t (I didn’t like mine) but I think they are special! Have a great day!

  3. I love the poncho! I have a problem with them, however, unless I’m going to be at an outside event. They seem to be too much if I’m going to be inside and even with a pretty tee, can’t really take them off easily.

    1. I usually wear mine to church or somewhere that I don’t need to be doing much moving around. I can see them getting in the way if you’re at work or going out to eat. I wore this outfit to Bible study, and it was fine. Also, that building is always cold, so I knew I wouldn’t overheat. 🙂

  4. Oh boy… joLynne I bought that darn TB convertible bag on the first day of the Anniversary sale this summer and, for whatever reason, thought it might be too similar to a ‘sole society’ bag I own…So, quickly took it back for someone else to purchase and enjoy and have kicked ,myself ever since. Every time you show it I kick myself all over again! I actually check every once in awhile to see if they show it again as it was a N exclusive, my BAD!!!

    1. LOL, it really is a great little bag. I never intended to keep it – thought I’d style it with a few outfits and return without actually using it. But then I needed something to go with an outfit and didn’t have the right thing, so I used it, and since then I’ve discovered that it goes with so much. I also like the size and ease of use. It’s not too big, but it does hold my gargantuan wallet and a few essentials like lipstick and tissues. I hate to keep featuring it when it isn’t avail for purchase, but I don’t have anything else that serves the same purpose. I’m kind of surprised they don’t have anything else at all like it.

  5. Love this poncho! It was one of the pieces I featured in my blog post last week during the LOFT 50% off sale. It looks great on you! 🙂 Melissa

  6. I love that you mentioned Adore your Wardrobe. When I saw this outfit I immediately thought how much I like this outfit but it does not follow the rules to show your curves. The outfit does look balanced on you and stylish. Love the color of your jeans.

    1. Yes, it’s a compromise outfit, for sure. And I’ll say, before I lost weight, I loved outfits like this because they are “safe” but now that I have lost a few pounds and am a little less lumpy (ha!) I really prefer to wear tops that are more fitted. Still, it’s cute and cozy for a change. 🙂

  7. Jo-Lynne, I love those booties!! Perfect casual heel height and they come in wide!! Can you tell me if you think the quality is worth the price? I do need (want) a new pair of gray booties but don’t usually invest that much in shoes I may not wear too often. On the other hand it’s so hard to find cute shoes in wide. I usually sacrifice comfort for fashion so it’s great when I can get BOTH! Do you also think the bootie trend will last more than one or two seasons? Again, to spend the money I would like to wear them a few years. Thanks! Btw, I loved your 11 Outfits post. I saved it for future reference!

    1. Hey Bonnie, they really are gorgeous boots. This is the 2nd pair I have from this brand, and they are truly luxurious. The leather lining is incredible. I think booties are here to stay for quite a while, and the lower shaft on these is a newer trend, so I think these will be keepers for a long time.

  8. I love the poncho and got it last time you styled it. I also got a top at loft that is the same burgandy. I love how you styled it today!!

  9. I just love this outfit. It is so pretty! Can you tell me about the Adore Your Wardrobe course? I would be interested in the next one. Thanks!
