Stripes + Ponte Moto Leggings

Greetings and happy Labor Day! I’m sure a lot of you are spending the day at the beach or poolside enjoying the last day of summer, but we had our “last hurrah” yesterday with a big gathering by the pool. Happily, the rain moved out, and we had a really nice night with friends.

I’ll be spending most of today taking my son back to college and getting the house in order for a new week, plus I need to prep some outfits for the photo shoot I scheduled for tomorrow. It’s going to be another hot one!

Cyndi and I decided to keep the momentum going and continue with our 25 Days of Fall Fashion, and today I’m going for more of an athleisure look with this striped top and ponte moto leggings.

I actually went to the mall last week specifically in search of a casual black and white striped top to go with these ponte moto leggings from Banana Republic, so I was thrilled when I found this one from LOFT.

It’s a Lou & Grey, which rarely goes on sale, but their LDW sale has no exclusions so you can pick up this striped pullover for $35! Unfortunately when I link to this pullover on the LOFT site, it forwards you to the Lou & Grey website, which is NOT on sale, so if you do want to purchase this top, click through to LOFT, and then click the Lou & Grey link on the top menu bar, and then click Tops & Sweaters on the left-hand sidebar on the next page. Scroll down until you see this top.

I love the laid-back, casual vibe. It’s a little heavier than a tee but not quite a sweater, and it has a bit of a nubby texture — so more of a dressy sweatshirt, if you will.

For size reference, I’m wearing a small, and it still seems slightly large on me, but I think it’s supposed to be a relaxed fit, and it might shrink up some in the wash. I would definitely go with your smaller normal size if you tend to run between sizes.

These pants are a nice alternative to plain leggings, and I love the subtle moto-inspired details. Because they’re made of a ponte material, they’re thicker than traditional leggings, so I don’t feel the need to completely cover my assets… #ifyouknowwhatImean.

I think they’d probably look better with a shorter sweatshirt, or I might also dress them up a bit with a white tee and denim jacket. I also like how they show them on the website with ankle boots and a camo utility jacket.

Unfortunately the black has almost sold out over the past few days, but the slate color is fully stocked, and it’s also a nice neutral. For size reference, I’m wearing the medium in these pants.

We took this picture so you can see the zipper detail on the hip. They also have seams down the front for more of a trouser effect.

Also, I meant to take out those earrings and wear simple studs. These are a little much for this casual outfit, plus they’re gold and I meant to wear silver. #ooops

Speaking of silver hardware, I carried this black satchel because it’s on the more casual side, and the silver hardware coordinates with the pants.

This bag was originally $325, and the price fluctuates a lot on Amazon, but today it’s under $150 so a good time to grab it if you’ve had your eye on it for a while.

I love this bag; I’ve had it for a few years, and it’s a great size plus it has an awesome classy-but-edgy vibe that appeals to me.

I completed the look with my black leather backless skate sneakers. I got these last fall, and they’re no longer available in the black leather so I’ll link up some options at the end of this post, but I also like the woodsmoke beige suede for a lighter neutral.

Slip-on sneakers are the perfect casual transition shoe for this awkward time of year. For perspective, it was 89 degrees with 90% humidity when we took these pictures! This is definitely an outfit I’ll save for cooler days ahead, but I do wear these sneakers three seasons of the year. They’re definitely not a winter shoe — at least not here in Pennsylvania — but I can wear them well into fall.

Overall, I like this casual weekend look, but the proportions are a bit off. I wish the shirt were a little shorter or the pants a little longer. Maybe I’ll try it with the shirt front-tucked next time. You’ll have to weigh in and let me know what you think.

  1. Love this! I ordered the pants last week after your try on sesh at BR and top yesterday after I saw your instagram. Been eyeing it off for a couple of weeksbut took me awhile to work out the discount was only through the Loft website, not the link 🙂 Can’t wait for them to arrive. Thanks for all your legwork and fashion advice. With a 2yr old and 4yr old in tow, I never get to the shops.

  2. I think a ‘front tuck’ would be just the ticket to help with the proportions. Love this look.Right up my alley!

  3. Love this kind of casual comfy outfit… I think the top looked better when you did the little tuck. A size smaller probably would have been better, as it looks a little big on you.
    Happy Labor Day

  4. Great outfit and the jewelry looks good anyway! 😁
So my husband and I are finally getting to go on vacation… we are headed to Gulf Shores, AL, driving today and we have all week there!  However, tropical storm Gordon is causing the weather forecast to show storms- every. Single. Day. 😭😭😭
I’m praying that we can a few sunny moments!!

  5. I think the outfit is really cute and flattering on you! Thanks for all of the work you put into everything, it show! Have a good day and safe travels getting your son back to college. My “babies” are 24 yr old twin girls who have been back home for a little while after graduating but are planning to find an apartment soon….yikes! I will miss them again!!!

  6. While I really like this outfit, the top does seem too big.  I know that I like my tops to not have a slim fit thru the mid section, but when they are too full I no longer like them.  We don’t have any special plans today.  The sun and clouds are fighting each other again.  Have a beautiful day!
