Sugar Detox: An Update

the 21- day sugar detox

I’ve had a lot of questions about how things are going post-sugar detox. I’ve been meaning to write an update for a while. I’m definitely glad I did it, but going on three trips the following month definitely did NOT help me stay on track.

I was pretty conscientious in Seattle about not eating sugar and carbs. It wasn’t too hard out there. But I got home, had a 2-day turnaround, and then left for Costa Rica. I knew I was going to enjoy food and wine while I was there, although I tried to stay away from sugary cocktails and I didn’t eat much in the way of dessert. I ordered sensible foods and ate a lot of protein and veggies.

In the few weeks between Costa Rica and Turks & Caicos, I wasn’t feeling very good. When I’m down in the dumps, I eat. So yeah, things started to go south.

My 10-pound weight loss closed in to 5. It’s okay; I was still in my comfortable range, and I don’t want to live my life haggling with the scale over a couple of pounds. My clothes still fit and I felt pretty good.

I still did fairly well in Costa Rica as far as food was concerned. I think gluten-free living helps keep my carb and sugar intake down, especially when traveling because gluten-free substitutes aren’t plentiful as they are here at home. I did, however, take advantage of the delicious cocktails the bartenders were whipping up.

So much for sugar detox!

Back at home, I’m feeling better already because I’m not eating out for every meal. It’s so much easier to control what I eat and how much I eat when I’m the one in the kitchen. I’m still aiming for that paleo/primal lifestyle I’ve talked about. I’ve slipped up a few times, mainly because I am definitely craving sweets again. It’s not usually dessert that gets the best of me; it’s breakfast. Which leads to snacking . . .

I get really tired of eggs for breakfast. And I’m just lazy. So unfortunately, I’ve been making use of that big box of Quaker Valley Oats & Honey granola bars I bought at Costco a few months ago. The kids are tired of them, ahem. So guess who’s eating them??

And in a weak moment, I defrosted the Udi’s gluten-free bread I had stashed in the basement freezer, so even when I opt for eggs for breakfast, I often fry them and eat them atop a piece of toast. They really are so much more tasty that way!!!

Eating carbs for breakfast definitely makes me want to snack throughout the rest of the day. I’ve found myself rumbling around in the kitchen, searching for something…. not even sure what. Just that dissatisfied feeling you get when you want something sweet and there’s nothing in the house.

It’s frustrating because I beat those cravings before, but even when I did it, I knew it was going to be hard to stick to a paleo/primal way of eating for the longterm. And now the holidays are approaching. So. Yeah.

Overall I’m still eating fairly well. I don’t feel like I’ve totally fallen off the wagon, but I hate that I’m struggling with the cravings again. I’ll probably have to do the sugar detox again at some point, but I’m not sure when. I suppose when I get desperate enough, right?? Let’s get through Halloween first!

  1. I was one of the ones who asked for an update. Thank you for your honesty! It is so difficult to find the balance of sustainable and healthy. I too aspire to be paleo/primal but in the end I guess I just don’t want it badly enough. I still eat corn, gluten-free crackers and a lot of dairy. I really associate sweets with relaxing so evening after the kids are all in bed is the hardest time for me. The less I give in to the craving the easier it is for me to refrain, but I’m still tempted every. darn. evening.

  2. I rarely feel the need for something sweet, unless you count a glass of wine. ha. Keeping me away from bread, or chips, or pasta however…. and don’t begin to tell me I can’t have cheese.
