Summer Date Night Outfit: Red Off-the-Shoulder Top

I can’t believe it’s already time to launch my 22 Days of Summer Fashion style collab with Cyndi at Grace + Beauty! Summer is my favorite season of the year, so my excitement is off the charts. Plus, the weather actually FEELS like summer here in Philly. This is the first style collab we’ve done where the weather is cooperating.

For my first post in our summer fashion series, I’m sharing a summer date night outfit from my visit to the Hyatt Chesapeake a few weeks ago. I wore this out to dinner the first night we were there.

Summer Date Night Outfit: Embroidered Off the Shoulder Top with white distressed J.Brand jeans and Tory Burch Lexington Sandals

I have searched high and low for an off-the-shoulder top that I feel comfortable wearing outside of the house. This one cost more than I wanted to spend, but I have ordered at least a dozen (that is not an exaggeration!) off-the-shoulder tops, trying to find one I felt good in. I struck gold with this Embroidered Challis Off the Shoulder Top from Velvet by Graham & Spencer at Nordstrom.

One thing I really like about this top is that it can be worn on or off the shoulder. Most off-the-shoulder tops don’t look right when you put them up on the shoulders, but this one works both ways. I actually prefer the sleeve length when it is worn on the shoulder. When it is off, the sleeves are so long, you can hardly see my bracelet.

I also really love the drape and how soft it is. So many off-the-shoulder tops are voluminous through the waist area and add visual weight. This top isn’t snug-fitting by any stretch, but it drapes nicely and is very flattering. The boho chic vibe is very on trend right now, but this top is still classic enough to fit my style aesthetic.

I paired it with my favorite white distressed crop jeans, although I think I might prefer it with my regular full-length skinnies. I’ll probably wear it with them next time. Either way, it looks great with white jeans. I think it would also be cute with blue jeans for a more casual look — maybe a 4th of July event if it’s not super hot???

I left the neckline open and wore my Stella & Dot Arabesque Chandelier Earrings. I wanted a large earring so they didn’t get lost in my hair. These are light and airy and not too dressy.

I kept the shoes and handbag neutral so the top is the focal point of the outfit. In case you’re wondering, I’m wearing this Fantasie strapless bra. I don’t think there is any such thing as a comfortable strapless bra, but it does the job and it comes in a nice range of sizes.

I pulled my hair back and secured it with a few bobby pins. Super easy, and that way I didn’t have to worry about it frizzing out in the humidity, plus I always feel like it’s flattering to have my hair pulled back from my face. I like it for a date night look.

The Choptank River at sunset provided the perfect backdrop to showcase this outfit! You can read more about our weekend at the Eastern Shore in this post. We’re going back with the family in a few weeks, and we can’t wait.

  1. Beautifully done! And so are you! The color looks great on you & you have the shape to wear the off the shoulder! Color me jealous! Well, actually I had my day in the sun, if you know what I mean! I could wear the cold shoulder style now to cover up those dents on my shoulders from that dang bra & being a bit too weighty in the chest area for a good many years! This outfit definitely definitely gives me some inspiration to look for a top that color & similar style! Like the idea of the chandelier earrings & skipping the necklace. Once again, another chic & classy style for me to replicate to fit my body type. Can’t wait to see what you & Cyndi have in store for us! Enjoy this beautiful PA weather! ????

  2. Love that off the shoulder top. Very cute. Do you use a self tanner? If so what kind? Great outfit for first day of summer styling. Can’t wait to see the rest.

  3. I haven’t decided how I feel about the off the shoulder trend, but I’m really diggin’ that top. The color is great and the style is just amazing. I may have to give it a shot! The whole outfit looks great together!

  4. Hey Jolynne! Love love love this outfit! Would you mind sharing what size top you are wearing? And what is your opinion about fit on someone a little shorter (5’2″)?

    1. Hey Michelle. It is a medium. 🙂 I maybe could have gone with a small, but it’s so hard to know without trying. This felt very comfortable on. I think it could be a little long on someone shorter, but it’s hard for me to say. I hope that helps!

  5. I really love the colour of this top on you and the style looks fabulous on you. Yay I love the complete look ????????
Isn’t it fabulous when the sun shines.
    Looking forward to day 2
    Love Nicky????

  6. Love the red top and white jeans. I need a pair of released hem jeans…soon. 🙂 I also love the navy off the shoulder top you have on in the photo on Cyndi’s Blog. Did you keep that one? Can you share details of that one too. Thanks so much! 🙂

  7. I’m reading your post late today, JoLynne. You are absolutely stunning in these pictures! I love everything about this outfit. Your hair looks beautiful pulled back, and your tan just adds an extra glow. I swear you look like you’re in your 20’s. Exceptional post, and perfect to start off your summer series.

  8. You look absolutely stunning!!! The color really compliments your hair & skin color. Go bright more often—it really suits you!

  9. Great styling. I never now how to style red. I always think of other bright colors with it, but never think of neutrals. Lovely top!

    1. I usually wear red with neutrals. 🙂 I think it’s pretty with other brights, but I’m afraid to look like a clown, haha! A bright yellow bag would have been a nice addition.

  10. Yay, a winner! It’s stunning on you too. Those earrings also caught my eye, I think they are just perfect with this.

  11. You’re right about the Boho Chic trend. I think it works great for warm weather…all the loose flowy looks and fun ethnic prints. 🙂

I like this top on you. I’m glad there are some out there that you can wear both on and off the shoulder.

How comfortable is this style when you wear it off the shoulder? Does it feel like it’s falling off. That was my one hesitation about trying the style. I think if I felt like it was falling off all day I wouldn’t wear it. I saw one that had little spaghetti straps on Shop Style that I might order to try. 😉 Today is June 1st so my shopping freeze is officially over. WOO HOO. Now to planning summer wardrobe.

    xx-S

  12. The outfit looks great on you, and I love the, off the shoulder, blouse. I do have to agree with you about the pants though. The distressed look seems fine for day wear, shopping or a picnic or even late night in a bar, but not so much for evening dinner at a resort.

    1. It was a super casual restaurant, but yeah, I think overall I’d like this look better with the longer, non-distressed jeans. 🙂 I had them with me too – not sure why I pulled these out! LOL!
