Summer Outfit Formula to Try: Tie Front Tank + Denim Skirt

Here’s an easy outfit formula to try — pair a tie front tank with a denim skirt, add sandals, and voila! An effortless, put-together look for all of your casual summertime activities.

I’ve shared that I struggle with styling skirts because so many tops these days are long or boxy, and the front-tuck can look awkward.

Some of the younger girls knot their tees with their skirts, but that often reveals more than I’d like, but this tie front tank with a denim pencil skirt is the perfect pairing!

First let’s discuss this top.

This button-front tie tank top is from Madewell, and it comes in a bunch of fun colors.

I love the button-up front and the v-neck and how the straps are wide enough to be bra-friendly. The seam up the back is another nice subtle detail.

It’s made of a nice, thick ribbed cotton that holds its shape and isn’t see-through at all.

It’s currently on sale for $24 plus an additional 20% off with code ENJOY20. That brings this $39 top down to $19!

I’m wearing a medium, for reference, and I definitely recommend sizing up if you tend to run in between sizes.

This denim skirt is another fab find. It’s the Wit & Wisdom brand at Nordstrom, so it’s good quality at a moderate price point. I love how stretchy and comfortable it is. I wore it all day yesterday and felt great in it.

It has some fading and distressing, so it’s not as dressy as some, but it’s perfect for casual activities when jeans are too hot and you’d rather not wear jean shorts.

It runs TTS or size down if in between; I’m in the 6.

If you like the color but not the distressing, this NYDJ denim skirt is a nice choice, and it’s also a couple inches longer.

And finally, these sandals! I originally ordered them for my daughter because she has finicky feet and likes a supportive shoe. They were too small for her, so I absconded with them.

They have a molded footbed for support, and the straps keep them on your feet when you walk, but they’re not clunky at all. Anyone looking for a flattering comfort sandal that isn’t frumpy should definitely check these out! At $78, they’re one of the most affordable leather comfort sandals I’ve tried.

I have the platinum, but they come in a ton of great neutrals, and some sizes and colors are even on sale at Amazon. Definitely size up half in these. I’m wearing an 8.5 and I usually wear an 8.

I accessorized with some gold jewelry, and I carried an ivory leather hobo.

Unfortunately this bag is sold out in the ivory, but it’s really pretty in the Devon Sand, and it’s currently eligible for Bloomies Power Points — that’s a $75 Rewards Card you receive within a couple of days to spend at Bloomingdales.

This Nordstrom brand leather hobo is another nice choice, and it does come in ivory. I’ve really enjoyed having a bag this color.

  1. Very nice outfit!  I love the texture of that top & the color looks perfect with the denim skirt!  The blush color is so pretty & soft looking, I wish it was a flattering color for me. The way this weather has been,  you’ll have to style your outfits with an optional cardigan or jacket!  It was sooo cold this morning & now we have a pretty good wind blowing, brrr…but at least it is ☀️!

  2. Great outfit Jo-Lynne! I like that the skirt isn’t too short. I haven’t gotten the email yet this morning.

  3. Love this outfit and the colors, there is something about blue and pink together that looks so nice. Congrats to your daughter too! Hope you all have a great summer! 🙂

  4. I love this combo and formula!! You’re so right. I’m often stumped with summer skirts in general because I don’t really want to tuck in, but the length and fit of the skirt doesn’t look right with an untucked shirt. So a front tie is an obvious and great solution. I’m going to do this today!

  5. I have been wanting a tie front top! Just bought this one same color as yours in your shopping widget. I have all the other items, different sandals. You are such a good shopper and find the best deals. Happy summer to me and you.

  6. Perfect timing for me, Jo-lynne!  Just finished my closet clean out and have “close-enough” pieces for this formula!  I picked up three tie front tees that will be great with my one denim skirt.  Yay!

Congrats to your daughter!  She must feel so proud of how she stuck with it and learned to play a very cool instrument.   How fun!  There are a few groups at school that seem to have the nicest kids, and band is definitely one of them.

  7. How do you compare this skirt to the AG denim skirt you featured a while back? I got that one and love it, but I’m curious which you like more.

    1. Hey Jane. It’s similar in comfort and stretchiness, but the AG skirt has a raw hem. I like this finished hem better, I think. I also like the seaming details on this one. That said, I much prefer the wash on the AG, so it’s kind of a draw.

  8. Cute outfit.  I just bought a black top with a tie front.. I wore my jogger pants,  white t shirt and denim jacket today … it’s been near possible to leave without a cardigan or jacket… finally looks like it’s warming up midweek though so let’s hope:)

  9. CONGRATULATIONS to your youngest on her band award!  🎹 🎼 🏆 What a nice causal outfit!  It’s to bad my closet does not have any vacancies.  Have a great rest of the day!

  10. I agree on these shoes Jo-Lynne. I ordered them a few weeks ago and debated whether I needed another pair of sandals. I wore them the other day and am so happy I decided to keep them! So comfortable and cute too!

  11. Really cute top! My oldest son was in marching band in HS. I don’t know who enjoyed it more, him or me! 😆

  12. Did you ever announce a new winner last Saturday for the May giveaway? Are you still doing the Facebook lives on Tuesdays?

  13. I must confess, I don’t think I’ve ever been tempted to try a denim skirt. Until now, of course! I really love it with this top and the sandals. They both work so perfectly with it. Great outfit!

  14. Thank you for this post! I love denim skirts on other people but I really hate tucking in shirts! This is the perfect compromise!! Going to dust off my never-worn denim skirt and wear this exact formula this week!! <3
