Summer Skort Outfit

Greetings, friends, and welcome back to 22 Days of Summer Fashion! Today I’m styling a summer skort outfit.

And yes, I’m aware that there are still Christmas greens in my planters. That situation has since been remedied!

I planted some lovely ferns soon after we took these pictures, and now I’m just hoping I can keep them alive. (The greens were artificial; maybe I should find some good quality faux ferns… 🤔)

I wanted to incorporate a skort into my summer style series, so I ordered a few to try, and this Soho Skort from Athleta was the winner winner, chicken dinner!

This skort is soooo comfortable. I like it a lot better than their Action Skort, which I also tried. That one was tight around the legs (the inner shorts were, that is) and the material of the skirt was a little stiffer.

This one, on the other hand, is made of a recycled featherweight stretch fabric, and it has a wide knit waistband for ultimate comfort.

The inner shorts are made of a soft mesh fabric, and they don’t bind at all. I also like the rear flap pockets and small side slits.

This skort runs true to size; I’m wearing the 6, for reference. It also comes in navy, olive, and brown; and they do have a few tall sizes, although those are mostly picked over.

I paired it with this Madewell tank top, and I’d say it’s a little bolder and more of a rust-red in person. It’s the Etruscan Clay.

I’ve been wearing this tank a ton lately with jean shorts, but it looks just as good with this skort. I like how it skims the body without clinging, and the straps are nice and wide and bra-friendly.

It’s currently marked down to $24.50, plus an additional 35% off with code REALDEAL, and it runs true to size. I have the small.

I recently added these snake print thong sandals to my closet. I’ve had these sandals before in other colors, but I thought this snake print was perfect for leveling up my casual outfits.

They’re Sam Edelman, with his typical quality and comfort, but they run small. I sized up to an 8 1/2.

Then I just threw on a few of my favorite pieces of jewelry to complete the look — these Lucky Brand hoops, my Anna Beck pendant, and the D Yurman link bracelet I’ve had for something like 15 years.

This outfit is so comfortable and easy to wear, I actually kept it on for the rest of the day after we took these pictures. I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for more skorts.

  1. Such a timely post! I wanted a skort and I’ve been ordering them and sending them back. Each one I’ve tried in a knit material has been too flared at the hem, which flares across my thighs at their widest part. Not the best look, lol. I’m going to give this one a try. Thank you for sharing, Jo-Lynne!

  2. I’m really liking this outfit. I use to wear skorts all the time because I have a hard time finding shorts that fit probably. My daughter is a big Athleta fan so maybe I’ll suggest she order one of these skorts for my bday next month 😃
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Love this! I’ve recently gotten a couple from Calia by Carrie Underwood at Dick’s, and this great inspiration.

      1. I have that one and love it! It doesn’t have attached shorts (I just use Jockey wicking shorts), and it’s a bit longer. I’m 5’8”, though, so it works for me. 🙂

  4. Really like this leveled-up look over the typical shorts we wear! I’ll be ordering this skort!
Cinnamon rolls are my husband’s favorite! Think Caroline would share her recipe? Sounds like culinary school could be in her future!

  5. Did you try the denim croft and barrow skort from Kohls? Curious about your thoughts on that one. Thanks!

  6. What a great casual outfit on you!  I may have to try on some skorts again to see if my opinion of them, on my body, has changed any.  I hope you have a great day!  Faux plants are awesome for those of us that don’t have a green thumb!!

  7. Think I may have to check that skirt out, it looks great on you! Funny, I planted ferns in planters a few weeks ago and am struggling to keep them alive. I had the same thought–aren’t there any great faux ferns? They look so nice on other people’s porches in my neighborhood, but for the life of me I cannot keep them alive:(

  8. Hi Jo-Lynne,
I love this look.  Tell me about the rule of thirds when you wear shorts. How do we balance out the top and bottom pieces of this type of outfit? Thanks !
PS I think Pottery Barn has great silk ferns.

  9. Love this outfit! Athleta is one of the few stores open in our area so I just placed my pickup order. Also love how the sandals elevate the casual look. And good luck with your ferns. Maybe since I’m now home all summer my potted plants will survive this year!

  10. Thanks for this post. I never really thought about a skort but that is really cute so I might try ordering a couple! I had one in the 90s from Ann Taylor that I remember wearing on vacation to Hawaii when my oldest son was just 6 months old.
Interesting how states have different codes for reopening. In CA it’s “stages” and we are currently in stage 3. Stage 4 would mean everything has returned to “normal pre-covid” . There sure are a lot of people out and about though and at certain places it feels like “normal.” The beaches have been packed! Disneyland is planning to open next month. Glad you’re feeling better!

  11. I love skorts, especially when I am travelling. The kind with zippered pockets like you are wearing are perfect for holding my camera / phone for easy access to take pictures. Jo-Lynne, thanks for front tucking your shirt as I would never of thought to do so.

  12. I have several Athleta skorts of different styles and loooooove all of them. I discovered them almost ten years ago and they are a regular part of my summer wardrobe. I’ve gotten picker as I’ve gotten older, so now I always look for ones that have pockets that will fit my phone.

  13. This is so cute on you!  I do have a couple of skorts that I hope to wear if it ever gets warm enough here.  I did order the cute palm print top from Loft through your link in your email. Thanks for the heads up!  If I can’t go on vacation this year, wearing that top will at least help me feel like it.  Ha.

  14. I love these! I also tried a skort from Talbots and it’s become a favorite. Skorts have become a regular in my wardrobe, just a bit of a step up from shorts. Thanks for the great post 🙂
