Summer Sweater with Shorts Outfit

A sweater with shorts is one of my favorites looks to wear in the summertime… when the weather is cooperating, that is.

Yes, I realize my Southern sisters don’t know this foreign language with which I speak, and that’s a shame because it’s a fun look to wear. It’s very New England prep, which is not my typical style, but for some reason I love it.

A sweater with shorts is one of my favorites looks to wear on cool summer nights.

I also associate this look with evenings at the beach. I love those cool nights after a long day in the sun, walking along the boardwalk with the ocean breeze blowing off the water, nibbling on an ice cream cone… I can’t wait! Our beach trip is just three weeks away.

In fact, I wished I had jeans with me last year when we were at the beach, the evenings were so chilly. This SEA sweater will be just as cute with my distressed skinnies as it is with shorts.

A sweater with shorts is one of my favorites looks to wear on cool summer nights.

I fell in love with this sweater when I saw it on the Loft website, but sometimes I don’t love their sweaters in person so I was thrilled to find this one to be super soft and comfortable.

The fit is nice too, a bit slouchy but not oversized, and it does have some gentle shaping through the waist. If you want a slouchier look, you could size up, but I got my regular size small.

With a shorter neck and large chest, I generally prefer v-necks and scoop necks, but the higher neckline makes more sense for the style of this sweater, so this ballet neck is a nice compromise. It’s more flattering on me than a crewneck because it shows a little more skin, which helps elongate the neck.

You can see here that the sweater has slightly dropped shoulder seams and side slits in keeping with the laidback vibe.

To keep this look casual, I wore my Converse Shoreline sneakers. I like the Shoreline style for two reasons — first, because it’s a slip-on, so easy to pull off and on and no futzing with laces. And two, because it has a lower vamp than typical sneakers — meaning the part of the shoe that covers the top of your foot doesn’t come up as high.

The traditional Converse low top has a higher vamp, so it comes up higher on the foot, all the way to the ankle, thus shortening the visible leg area. It’s only an inch, but I’ll take every inch of leg I can get. Ha!

My jean shorts are old and sizes are limited, but there are plenty of similar options; and if you don’t like your shorts this short, you can totally wear this sweater with longer shorts. It would be nice with the Bermuda shorts I featured in yesterday’s post.

I carried my red tote because I like the color contrast, but it’s a little too dressy for the laidback-casual vibe I was going for here. I think a casual crossbody would make more sense — basically something you might throw on to go to the boardwalk on a nippy summer night.

My Alex and Ani bangles make yet another appearance here, and oversized pearl studs are the perfectly understated preppy accessory to finish off the look… at least that’s what I was going for. I revert to these earrings whenever I want something simple that works with everything, and I think they add a touch of elegance to my casual everyday outfits.

  1. Jo-Lynne,
I’m as excited about your house as you are. lol. We moved into ours 8 years ago, but have done a complete overhaul to most of the rooms. I did your home tour on Instastories and loved the layout and the light. I was mentally decorating it as you were giving the tour. A round rug in the foyer is the way to go. I’d love to decorate your office where you can have fun with it and a touch of GLAM. Please keep the progress pictures coming. What color palate are you thinking for your office? I want to help! 🙂
    Enjoy your weekend,
    Missy

  2. GM and thank you for another great summer fashion series. With all you had going on, you still managed to keep up with the blog and give us some nice fresh summer options. I would totally wear a sweater with shorts and in fact I did on our trip to Cali but not in Texas in July. Lol. Also wanted to tell you that I brought a few items last month that I really like. One is the CR cleansing balm and it’s really a great product and worth the price. I am going to try and buy a few more products a little at a time and when they are on sale. My face and skin, thank you 😊. I also ordered the Lucky Brand silver/gold layered necklace and I got lots of compliments. Just need to keep it hanging separately because it really does get tangled up. Enjoy your weekend and pool time with the kids as much as possible…because as you now know, they grow up so fast.

  3. I just got back from my girlfriend trip to your beautiful neck of the woods and thought of you as we were sightseeing in Philadelphia.  We rented a house in Lancaster County and had a really fun  week exploring the area.  I saw the tour of your house on  Instastories – no wonder you are so excited!  And that pool area! Wow!  So many fun summer days ahead!  And, thanks for all the fun summer outfits you put together on top of all the other life events you have going on.  I never understood long sleeves/sweaters with shorts before I moved to the Northwest from Arizona.  I get it now!

  4. Isn’t it great that your girls are old enough to get their space set up in the new house!  I know getting everything cleaned up before you start putting your things is a pain, but it’s a smart thing to do.  I bet y’all are enjoying the pool.  I really like this outfit!  One of my favorite tops to wear is a sweatshirt and has been for years, even with shorts.  We are going to Cashiers, NC, in a couple of weeks, where it’s cooler, so a sweatshirt will definitely be in order.  Yes, wearing a sweatshirt at home right now, is definitely out of the question.  Enjoy your summer weather!

  5. Such a cute look but unfortunately would never work here in KC. With temps of 100and high humidity I would melt and everyone would look at me like I was crazy 😜.  Saw the video of your new home and outdoor space it is so pretty! I would spend all my time around the pool ❤️

  6. I do love this look! As a former Ohio girl I would totally wear it in the evenings but now living in Florida, it would be perfect for December. Watched your story on Instagram and I love your house. It is perfect. You will have so much fun decorating. Enjoy!

  7. That’s a fun beachy, summery sweater. I like to have something like that along at the beach too. Restaurants are always so cold. Love seeing your beautiful new house on Instastories!!!

  8. What a cute outfit!  I love long sleeves and shorts, especially a sweater or sweatshirt with shorts.  Not that I’ve worn that in the last  100 years ?  Funny how we get in ruts of what we wear AND what we don’t.

Your new home is absolutely beautiful.  And the pool and backyard are equally so.  I’m so happy for you and your family and appreciate you sharing this part of your life with all of us.  It is fun!  You really make us feel as if we know you, and somehow, as if you know us.  : )

  9. Love your latest HOME. So perfect. Have the sweater. Perfect to wear down the shore on a cool night.

    1. You could wear slip-on Vans or Adidas Gazelle or another “fashion sneaker” – or also, a casual flat sandal. 🙂 I’d wear my TB Miller sandals, but I can also envision Birks or brown “fisherman sandals” to keep it more casual.
