Sunday Morning Coffee Talk

It gray and dreary outside this morning. We got the biggest snowfall of the season last night — which is still only about four inches. For some reason, the snow keeps going around us this year.

Not that I’m complaining. We’ve been getting enough to keep it pretty but not enough to cause any major school closings or other inconveniences, which is pretty much perfect in my book. Still, I keep hoping we get dumped on at least once before the winter is over. I love snow. I always have.

Someone needs to fill the bird feeder.

Even though I often talk longingly about moving south, I think I’d really miss winter. It is spring I detest. Spring never quite arrives here, and I have to wait sooooo long for summer. I do miss springtime in Virginia.

Any-Who. Why do I feel compelled to begin every post discussing the weather?

We just started watching Gilmore Girls. I know I’m late to this party, but everyone talks about it and keeps telling me I should watch it, so we finally started with Season 1 on Netflix. I think it’s safe to say that I’m totally hooked, and so are my girls. It’s rated TV14, but so far, I don’t see any reason the girls (9 and 12) can’t watch with me. Does it get inappropriate at some point?

In other news, I saw my foot doctor (orthopedist) this week. I can’t remember if I wrote about that or not. He basically said to finish out PT, and in a few weeks I should be able to begin resuming normal activities. I’m not sure what that means. I have no grand plans to start running or anything, but it sure would be nice to walk and bike again.

Ironically, after I saw the doc, my foot has started bothering me a lot, and it’s been bothering me quite a bit these past few days, so I’m still skeptical that it is actually getting better. I suppose only time will tell. I’m just trying to wear sensible shoes and not think about it too much.

Let’s see, what else? I’ve been out and about a lot this week, which is not good for getting work accomplished, but it is good for my spirits. On Friday, I actually went out for both lunch and dinner. Oh, did I mention, it is also not good for my waistline. UGH. I know I should do that sugar detox again and try to get back on the wagon, but I really do enjoy my indulgences.

Case in point, I made peanut butter donuts with chocolate ganache yesterday…. stay tuned. I’ll be posting the recipe soon! They were really good for gluten-free baking. In fact, I just had one with my morning coffee. Mmmm….

It IS National Margarita Day today, so don’t miss the Raspberry Margarita recipe that Colleen posted yesterday.

Finally, this is my last week of the 28 Days of Daily Outfits. I’d love to hear from you. Would you like a spring edition? Do you like it better when I post one outfit at a time? Or is it better to just do my weekly Daily Mom Style posts and leave it at that? I’m debating because I know not everyone is into the fashion, and I’m afraid that posting a new outfit every day might be overkill in that department. Let me know!

Have a lovely Sunday, and stay warm!

  1. Sometimes I swear we live a bit of a twin life! The big blue chair, etc. My daughter (15.5) and I JUST started watching Gilmore girls together a few weeks ago! I don’t know how I ever missed it either but we are both loving the series too. And also…I don’t know how they managed to capture my daughter on screen but they did. Rory is the total twin (except blond hair here) of my daughter. She has even taken a book to a dance! The only difference is I’m not a single mom.

    1. Personally, the first two seasons of Gilmore Girls were my favorite. I think the tone/mood changes a bit as you get into further seasons, but the last one or two – I really didn’t appreciate at all in fact I didn’t even watch all of season 8. To me, it just became disappointing.

  2. I am bummed about every snowstorm hitting all around us, too. I love a big snowstorm.

As for Gilmore Girls, I love it, too. As far as watching it with your girls, it should be okay until Roy starts dating and is faced with the decisions that go along with that. The only other thing that comes to mind is that I think Lorelai sleeps with guys she’s dating.

I like the idea of spring fashion posts. Actually, the fact that spring takes forever to arrive around here makes spring fashion the trickiest of all seasons, so it’s always nice to have some new ideas!

    1. Yeah, that sounds dicey on the GG. I’ll probably have to stop watching it with them at some point. Spring is DEFINITELY tricky around here. I was thinking of going back to the weekly outfit posts in March to give myself a bit of a break, and b/c the weather is still winter here for most of March. Then I might do a 30 days of spring fashion in April.

  3. Loved your winter daily outfit posts, thanks for the inspiration! I am on the last season of GG, and I loved the show, too! It’s a very tame show, should be fine for the girls. Although it does go into some sex talk when Rory loses her V. Hope you have a great Sunday!

  4. I really like the weekly fashion posts actually…..seeing it all in one place and all. Kudos to you for keeping up with the dailies though. i can’t imagine anyone wanting to see MY daily outfits! I can see how it would be great incentive though to spiff it up a bit.
Just a thought: you haven’t posted a lot recently regarding skin care. At, ahem, 46, this is becoming one of my more regular concerns. So much of what is out in the media is geared towards younger or older women, I feel like we fall through the cracks. Or get offered Botox and fillers, which I am not interested in. Finding makeup and skin care that is reasonably priced is always a challenge. I do enjoy my Birchbox subscription for just that reason….to try out more options.
I too enjoy changing seasons and winter, but admit that this time of year the snow and endless cancellations are becoming tiresome. Which goes hand in hand with the, shall we say, relaxed eating habits. I need to gear up to a good solid week of clean eating to get back on track, but it’s so hard to think about salad and low-carb when it’s freezing!

  5. But you look so thin even without the exercise! What is your secret??
I personally like the weekly fashion post as it gives me something to look forward to. Anticipation and all that. 🙂
Maybe you can go ahead and discuss the spring fashion trends before spring arrives? It gets pretty warm early on here.
Thanks for all your interesting posrs and hard work!

    1. Yeah, I’ll definitely start the spring posts soon. And I think the weekly fashion posts make the most sense. I’m definitely struggling to stay in my clothes without the exercise. I am debating doing that sugar detox again. I am at least going to try to cut back down on carbs again. It’s such a never-ending battle, isn’t it!?

  6. The weekly fashion posts are enough for me. To me your site is so much more than fashion, so I like a balance of it all. Health, food, vacation, fitness, ‘aging’ gracefully, skincare, haircare, beauty buzz, weather, life in general. You talk often about Gluten Free and the challenges/solutions associated with that. I would love your take on being the mom of child with a food allergy. As someone who walks that daily life, it can often feel lonely. You have a great forum to raise awareness about things that people don’t often think about…..cross contamination, teens managing it themselves, etc. etc. Keep up the great work. Love checking in with you daily…or every other day!

  7. Your foot might be hurting more since you got the ok to get back to normal activities because you’re doing more or wearing shoes that don’t give your foot the same level of support or comfort. I’m just surmising here. Once I got the hook ahead to do more, I did and as a result started to hurt again. I had to figure out what I was doing that was causing it by scaling back on activities. I figured out it was the LONG walks.
    Yes please, to spring fashions!

  8. Yes, Gilmore Girls is rated TV14 for a reason: it does become inappropriate, in my opinion, for younger girls as it goes along.
It would be best for you to preview them and decide if you think your daughters should see them. My daughter and I watched
them together when she was 16 and 17, and even then, I felt much of it was questionable! When Rory is in college, those
episodes bring up A LOT of adult issues. But, on the flip side, my daughter and I had a lot of discussions, then, based on what
we watched. Do watch WITH your daughters, if you decide to continue the series at their age, so that you can discuss your family’s values as different topics come up in the series. Also, Lorelai sleeps with many, many men….yikes….not a great example to her daughter, in my opinion, and if I recall correctly, some of the men are married, and then Rory sleeps with a married man, too.

  9. Personally I enjoy the daily fashion. Thank you for sharing. I’d like to do the same with my blog but my readers expect more frivolity from me. Stereotyped unfortunately. I have to label non frivolous as serious to give it a health warning:)
I’ll look up GG. I don’t know if it’s on Netflix in UK yet

  10. I have loved the winter fashion posts and would enjoy a spring version as well. I like the daily posts, but I’m sure it’s a ton of work. I am definitely a yoga pants wearing sahm, but I do like to clean it up a bit when I pop into the school or meet my working friends for lunch. )

  11. Guess I need to get on the Gilmore Girls wagon :). Did you see The Paradise on Netflix. Holy addictive–and very clean. Enjoyed this little Sunday morning chat with ya.

  12. Welcome to the GG club! I own all seasons on DVD and have watched them too many times to count. Agree with everyone else who has commented. There are some adult themes throughout, which you probably aren’t ready to discuss yet with a 9-year-old. I don’t recall anything too racy actually being shown, per say, but it’s there.

There’s nothing quite like it though, so enjoy! 🙂

  13. Hmmm, I’m a little surprised reading the comments about Gilmore Girls. I never watched all that much, but I remember my sister watching a lot in high school. So, obviously older than your girls, but my parents were super strict about what we watched. Or at least what I watched, I was at least 13 before I could watch a PG movie without their express permission. Guess I didn’t watch consistently enough to realize what was going on with different relationships, or was just oblivious, LOL. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it even if you decide to stop letting the girls watch with you.

    1. I might let my older daughter watch – as long as I feel it’s good discussion and not just a single mom being promiscuous. I’ll have to see how it goes… but I think she’s at an age where we need to start talking about stuff. My 9-year-old, though, is already getting embarrassed at the kissing so…. she might have to start going to bed earlier, lol.
