Winter Outfit Ideas: Sweater Dress + OTK Boots

Sweater dresses are a hot trend this season, and for some reason, I keep getting drawn to this neutral oatmeal color. It looks fantastic with my chestnut OTK boots and leopard clutch.

I WANTED to like this Treasure & Bond Turtleneck Sweater Dress. I ordered it in a medium, returned it for a small, and ended up returning that too. It was way too boxy on me, and the turtleneck did me no favors.

Sweater dresses are tricky, especially when you have a fuller figure as I do. If they’re too tight, they show every lump and bump, and if they’re too loose, they look like a sack. One of the reviews of the Treasure & Bond dress on the Nordstrom website directed me to this Vince Camuto Sweater Shift Dress. I ordered a small because the reviews indicate that it runs small, and I’m glad I did. It fits perfectly.

I like that it has a cowl neck rather than a turtleneck. It’s still warm, but it shows more skin in the throat and neck area, which is more flattering than a tight turtleneck. I also like how it has some shape to it, but it isn’t clingy. I know that I still look best in dresses with stiffer fabric and more structure, but for a sweater dress, I think this one is about as good as it gets. I feel good in it.

The other reason I like this dress better than the first one is the 3/4-length sleeves. They tend to be more slimming than full-length sleeves, and they allow your bracelets to show, so bling it up!

If you like it, you can still order from Nordstrom by noon EST today (Wednesday, Dec 23) and it will be delivered sometime tomorrow (free shipping!!!) The same goes for the foldover clutch I’m carrying in these pictures.

Here’s a shot of the back. We were fighting with the sunlight so the picture is kind of dark, plus it was windy, but you can get the idea.

I regret to inform you that these boots are sold out yet again. I did find a VERY similar style — the Dolce Vita Okana (same brand) at Zappo’s, but they are $280. The Dolce Vita Garnett comes in the same color and is only $119. It comes to just below the knee and has a slightly lower heel, in case that is more up your alley. Then there’s the Vince Camuto Bernadine, which is a really nice looking OTK boot with a lower heel. It’s on sale for $148, but sizes are limited. I am seriously debating these in black or grey. I like the more casual vibe of the lower heel, and I have several outfits that are begging me for black or grey OTK boots. I’m keeping them in mind as I plan my capsule wardrobe for January.

YES!!! I’m going to do a capsule wardrobe after the holidays! Cyndi is going to join me, so stay tuned!!!! I am REALLY excited about it.

I’m planning to wear this outfit on Christmas Eve. We’re going out to dinner for my daughter’s birthday. It’s not your traditional holiday outfit. There’s no red or green or sparkle, but I still like it for a subtle take on holiday style. The light neutrals are unexpected this time of year, and the OTK boots and leopard bag make it special.

  1. Hi Jo-Lynne – I love your dress with those boots — I wear a dress every single day to work (summer/winter/you name it) and I have to say dressing for winter is my favorite. I have a slight obsession with boots 🙂 I love those low heeled Vince boots you link to but my size is sold out; hopefully I can find some over the knee boots when I hit up the after Christmas sales. I am already for Christmas – but with this warm weather is throwing me for a loop. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas 🙂

  2. This dress looks fantastic on you!! Love the neutrals and the clutch with it. I’m on the hunt for a new pair of brown boots, bought and returned 4 pair already. I’m seriously lacking in the calf department which makes finding a decent fitting pair a challenge. I don’t think I can pull off the OTK with my shorter legs, but I drool over yours every time you post them! Seriously love them!!
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

  3. Here’s a tip from someone old enough to have lived during the time when a slip was worn under every single outfit–well, not slacks, of course. 😉

A slip will alleviate cling issues, and will also help disguise humps and bumps, as well as getting rid of show-through. Slips are hard to come by these days, but if you can find one it can be a miracle worker that will save an outfit.

    1. How could I have forgotten to say how much I love the boots?!? Sadly, my legs are not long enough to accommodate OTK boots but that doesn’t stop me from drooling over them when I see them.

  4. I too am old enough to remember always wearing a slip under my dresses, and I still own a few. I have found them recently at Kohl’s, in case anyone needs one. I love the detailing of the dress. And yes, you look great in it! I hope that your daughter enjoys her birthday celebration! I wish your family a very Merry and Blessed Christmas!

  5. Love love LOVE those boots–they are still available in my size, though ANOTHER pair of weekend-only (for me) boots seems like not my best use of funds. Hah! But every time you wear them, I think they are just fabulous. So I’m VERY tempted!!
