Sweater Weather

Sweater weather is finally here, and I must say, I’ve been making the most of it! There’s nothing better than walking out into a crisp, cool fall day in great fitting jeans, tall boots, and a cozy sweater in a gorgeous hue like this “burgundy fig.”

I always know I can count on Nordstrom for a great selection of sweaters at every price point, and their Caslon brand is one of my favorites for quality pieces that are stylish and won’t break the bank.

This mix stitch funnel neck sweater is case in point. It comes in five gorgeous colors, it has a great slouchy fit for wearing with leggings or skinny jeans, and the variety of stitch designs is unique and eye-catching. I suppose it would be cliché to say it was love at first sight, but, well, I’m obsessed. It wasn’t a question of whether or not to order this sweater when I first spotted it on the Nordstrom website; the question was what color I should order.

I debated for about ten minutes and finally decided on the burgundy fig. I love wearing burgundy during the fall and winter because it works well with my coloring (especially when I don’t have a tan) and it pairs so perfectly with my favorite neutral — grey.

This sweater is designed to be oversized, and I like the fit; I’m in my usual small. If you want it to fit closer to the body, you could size down.

Speaking of grey, I just introduced these grey suede over the knee boots to my ever-growing boot collection. My podiatrist has recommended that I wear 1 — 2″ heels as much as possible, so the way I figure it, these are pretty much doctor’s orders.

I’ve never had a pair of Vince Camuto boots that weren’t comfortable straight out of the box, and these are no exception. I wore them for a few hours the day we shot this look, and I almost forgot I was wearing new shoes.

Plus they’re a great marriage of quality and style. I love the tonal whipstitching up the side and the way they’re shaped through the calf. They have a partial side zipper so they can fit more closely to the ankle, which makes them super flattering as well as easy to get on and off.

These boots are going to be perfect with so many casual outfits this fall and winter, and the best thing about over the knee boots is they add an extra layer of warmth on cold days. The way this fall season is going, I’m going to be glad for that!

Mine are selling out, but you can also check out these Sole Society boots and this pair from Blondo if you’re looking for grey suede OTK boots under $200.

I debated putting black jeans with this look, and they would certainly work, but I ended up wearing these dark wash skinnies by Wit & Wisdom for a slightly more casual vibe.

I often get requests for more affordable denim recommendations, so lately I’ve been trying a bunch of different brands and styles, and these are really good for a classic dark wash skinny jean. They’re super-stretchy with legging-like fit, which is my favorite style, and they look really good on plus they’re comfortable. I wore them for a few hours, and they did stretch out some, but not so much as to bag out. Definitely size down, though, if you’re in between sizes. For reference, I’m wearing the 6.

I spotted this leather hobo when I was at my local Nordstrom last weekend. It’s a great size, and I love the seaming details. It seems like great quality for the price point, and my grey handbag situation was in need of an update, so I snapped it up. It also comes in burgundy and black, if you’re looking for something in one of those colors.

Because we seem to have skipped fall and moved right into winter here on the East coast, I’m already needing a coat when I go out so I wanted to show you my latest find — this oversized grey herringbone wool coat. The wide lapels and dropped shoulders along with the single-button closure are right on trend, and I love the large pockets for dropping my phone into when I’m out and about.

Unfortunately between the time I wrote this post and got it posted, this coat sold out, so I linked up a few other options below.

I think it’s easy to overlook our outerwear, but coats are a great way to vary your outfits. If you live in an area with a long winter as I do, half the time that’s all people see anyway, so I like to have a couple of different styles/colors in my closet.

Normally I like to put a scarf with a coat like this because I think it looks best with the neckline filled in, but in this case, I just pulled the funnel neck of my sweater over top and it ends up with the same effect. It also makes it feel more comfortable and less bulky.

As always, the convenience of shopping at Nordstrom is unmatched. I needed a few components of this outfit at the last minute, so I did the online ordering with in-store pickup, and it was ready within two hours of placing my order. I also wanted to do some shopping in-store, so I went inside and picked it up at the designated pick-up desk, but sometimes I do the curbside pickup when I’m really in a rush, and that service is the bomb dot com. Any excuse to avoid a crowd!

This outfit will definitely be on repeat for the next several months, but I also love how each component can be mixed and matched with other pieces from my closet to create a variety of cold weather looks.

  1. Somehow I missed, the fact, that you have a giveaway. Where is it announced? And how often? Sorry for my confusion, but it is Monday. HA!

    1. Yes! It’s a giveaway for email subscribers — I give away a $50 GC to a popular retailer each month, and I announce the last Saturday of each month in the newsletter. It’s my way of giving back and thanking you all for letting me into your inbox. 🙂

  2. Good Morning Jo-Lynne! I’ve been up since 4:30 AM and have already started my second load of laundry! I’ll probably be cashed by 3 this afternoon though! The burgundy fig sweater is beautiful! I love how you styled the whole outfit! What size are you wearing? Though it’s supposed to be oversized, do you feel you could have gone down one size? I’m considering ordering it but b/c I’m petite, I have to be careful not to add extra volume with sweaters or they can take over my frame. Just trying to figure out if I should downsize my regular size.

  3. Hi! I read your post Saturday and again today but I can’t seem to find where you posted your drawing winner. I must be overlooking something.

    1. It’s under the Weekend Sale Roundup section and above the Instagram Lately. It says OCTOBER GIVEAWAY WINNER in big letters. I’m not trying to hide it, lol. Maybe I need to move it up closer to the top next time. 🙂

  4. Love when you add a coat to the outfits you style.  As a Buffalo girl, this is really helpful in pulling together the whole smash!

  5. Well, if I were in need of a wool sweater, knee high boots, and a good short coat, I would be duplicating this look.  This outfit definitely gets a 💯!  I have added the W&W skinnies to my wish list.  Since I’ve lost weight, I have to wear a belt to keep my jeans in place, so I am going to try sizing down, one pair, to see if that helps.  Oh how I recall the years of getting up real early, like you do, and oh how I don’t miss them.  In the past six years I have become more of a night person, thus making the night hunts my preferred time to be in the woods.  Have a great day!

  6. This is the perfect outfit for the kind of life I lead…appropriate for so many situations and it looks so comfortable. I love the coat. And the boots. And the sweater. 😊 basically the whole ensuing is fantastic.

  7. I do love the color of your sweater! This is such a nice outfit! I am a fairly new Nordstrom shopper, thanks to you, and so it is good to know about the different brands and their quality and price. Thanks for sharing that information about the Caslon brand!
    Have a great day.

  8. “My podiatrist has recommended that I wear 1 — 2″ heels as much as possible, so the way I figure it, these are pretty much doctor’s orders.” I hope this means you will be styling more low heeled shoes! I am uncomfortable in anything over 2″.

  9. Love everything about this outfit! I live in Chicago an agree that I need multiple winter coats to go with different outfits. They get plenty of use over the winter here.

  10. Love the burgundy and grey together! I like the cowlneck layered on the outside of the coat, it does double duty as a scarf!
