Sweet Relief!

For the first time in eight days I am officially pain-free.

I took off this morning at eight o’clock (I’m so pleased with myself for remembering all the number rules) in my husband’s unnecessarily large black pickup truck and drove through snow and sleet to the oral surgeon’s office, where he determined that I have, wait for it…

Dry socket.

Oh yes I do.  It would have been nice if they had diagnosed this LAST MONDAY when I was in their office instead of letting me suffer for five more days, but all’s well that ends well.  After an excruciatingly painful experience where the doctor stuffed my socket with medicated gauze (are you gagging on your PB&J already?), I went on my merry way with another prescription for Vicodin, this time the extra-strength variety.

By the time I got home with my new prescription, my mouth felt so much better that I didn’t even bother to take the meds.  The pain of the last eight days has been replaced with the odoriferous and foul-tasting anesthetic that is contained in the gauze, but I’ll gladly take that trade.  Supposedly there are no food restrictions, but I can’t bring myself to eat anything with that nastiness in my mouth.  Perhaps I’ll be able to fit into my skinny jeans by Monday.

The kids are home from school, as we have another pitiful excuse for a snowfall.  What a disappointing winter this has been!  If you look real close, you can see blades of grass poking up through the snow.  But the kids don’t care.  They are all decked out in their snow gear and are congregating on our back hill with their sleds and saucers.

Looks like fun, huh?  If I were a good mom, I’d be out there with the other adults, supervising my kids.  But I’m gonna milk this sore wisdom tooth thing for all it’s worth.  Besides, I have BUNCO tonight.  I need to rest up.

A girl’s gotta have priorities, dontchaknow.

  1. So glad you finally got the right diagnosis! There is nothing more awful than oral pain. I’ll take some of that snow! We have had a total of 1 inch this winter! Hmph. At least school’s getting out in May.

Bunco players’ motto: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night (nor dry socket) stays these players from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Have fun!

  2. Megan – supposedly the medicated gauze will help it to heal. I think mainly it’s a waiting game, though.

Sarah – Lol – love the Bunco players motto. And remember last month? I was sick as a dog, but I was determined not to miss it.

Although I have a different take on the dental pain. It ain’t fun, but I’ll take this over my IBS and gastritis pains ANY DAY. Maybe b/c I know there is an end in sight? I dunno. But I think stomach pain is the absolute worst.

  3. Your ‘hood is so cute! Is it just your neighborhood or are there not many fences back east? We fence in our town home patios out here so the open area like what you have is really neat to see.

  4. Debby, THANKS!! It’s not the east. There are some with fences in our neighborhood, but they are usually the people with dogs.

The way our neighborhood is designed, there is “community open space” between yards, and then that big basin in the back is all community open space, so it gives the appearance of larger yards than we really have. So we only have to mow and pay taxes on our own property and the home owner’s associate fees take care of the open space.

So if we fence our yards, it really makes them seem smaller than if we don’t. And it’s nice for the kids to run free from one yard to the next without fences, so I hope everyone keeps it open like this.

  5. So sorry to hear about the dry socket. Just think of the tales you can share with your grandkids about driving thru the snow, uphill both ways, to get the diagnosis, meds, etc, etc. I say milk it for all it’s worth!

  6. I really really really don’t wanna have my wisdom teeth out. I sound like I’m 2, and I don’t care! I think my husband is going to have to drag me to the oral surgeon. I may even need a time out.

MILK that sore tooth for all its worth. Get some rest, you poor thing. You’ve been through heck! *hugs* Your kids won’t mind. 🙂

  7. When I got my teeth pulled… (i had two done one time and two done at a later date) i was very meticulous with my cleaning because I didn’t want to get “root rot”… i never could remember the term, dry socket… and my mother HATED that i referred to it as root rot. I forwarded your post to her with a little note that said, “poor thing has root rot”… to which she responded… “i really wish you would call it by it’s proper term.”

she loves me, she really does…

but i’m so glad you’re not in pain and if you think that snow is pitiful, you should be here.. we were supposed to get 2 inches over night… kroger was crowded and shelves were bare… and when we woke up?

    not a flake…

  8. So sorry about the dreaded dry socket! 🙁 I don’t want any hate mail, but I don’t have any wisdom teeth. Never had them, so they don’t need to be pulled…which makes me happy, being that I am such a wimp.

Cheering you on for the skinny jeans! When you feel faint, remember to eat a cube of cheese 😉

  9. Sorry about your sockets. That sounds terrible.
We actually had to go into the city today, and even with the weather we think it took less time than it would have on a normal day because there was so much less traffic.

  10. If that were the scene here in Texas, the snow would be yellow because all the kids would have peed themselves with excitement.

Sorry about your dry socket, and so glad you are doing better!

  11. You poor thing! You know, when you wrote awhile ago about being in pain I thought to myself, “I wonder if she has a dry socket?” But I figured you wouldn’t be able to function in life with pain like that ( I have never experienced dry socket, but I have heard that it is really awful).

I am glad that you are on the road to being pain free!

Snow! It makes me cold to just look at it!

  12. Oh, Damn! I was afraid of that! (I did pray for you, too, but apparently not enough.) When I brought Kyle in for his dry socket, the doctor said, “Kyle, I’m going to hurt you a lot, but it’s going to feel a lot better after that.” Boy, was he right! Seemed barbaric to me (the treatment). Glad you haven’t lost your sense of humor through all this, Stinky!

  18. I don’t know how you stood it for five days. This happened to my daughter and I’ve never seen anyone in so much pain. You poor thing.

That looks like plenty of snow to have fun in. Actually, it’s really pretty and I love that photo of all the kids out there having so much fun.

  19. My parents showed us pictures of the snow falling via Skype. I’m crossing my fingers that the area will get one more solid nor-easter snowfall after Lil’ Bug and I arrive. I would LOVE to have a true taste of winter.

And gracious – dry socket?! I never had it, but it sounds awful-awful. So glad you are out of the pain woods.

  20. Ah yep. I just commented on an older post about having dry socket myself. It sure is nice once they put that gauze in there, it’s amazing how it does help. 🙂

If I remember mine tasted like cloves or maybe cinnamon… maybe mint. LOL I can’t remember. I think the doctor gave me a choice though.

  21. i had my wisdom teeth out when i was 19. i also got a dry socket and the whole ordeal was the worst experience of my life. worse than childbirth. so i’m so sorry to hear about your pain.
