TGIF!!

I figured it’s time to fish or cut bait.  Either I go back to the gym and start working out again, or I cancel the membership.  But right now I’m throwing $80 a month down a dark hole.

So!

This morning I pulled myself up by my bootstraps away from the computer monitor and headed to the gym to meet a friend.  We had a vigorous walk with as much conversation as we could fit in between huffs and puffs (me more than her; she has not been the slug that I have this last couple months), and then we treated ourselves to an early lunch in the cafe while my baby played happily in the nursery.  Delightful!

I think I’m back on track.  I did so well right up to Christmas.  Then with the holidays and a bad cold and the wisdom teeth debacle, I just haven’t felt up to working out.  But summer is approaching, and it’s time to heave myself back up onto the wagon.  This morning gave me the kick in the rump that I needed to start going again.

After that, a trip to the grocery store was in order.  Are you one of those obnoxious moms who opens a box of cookies for your child to munch while you shop?  Well, I am.

I have never understood why people look with such disdain on this behavior.  I mean, would you rather listen to my child HOWL?  And I’m paying for it, after all.  It’s not like it’s a bag of grapes that’s sold by weight.

ANYhow, that’s what I did, and I won’t apologize for it, so there.  And now I have something to feed my family besides popcorn and canned green beans.  Because that’s about all that was left in the pantry before I made my jaunt to the grocery.

When I picked up my daughter from preschool at 1pm, I was treated to the most delightful serenade.  Evidently the church bells missed the memo about daylight savings, and they were chiming away an hour late.  Normally I don’t get to hear them because I either pick up at 11:30 or 1:00.

I recognized the tune, and even though I couldn’t immediately place the name of the hymn, I was assaulted with a hefty dose of nostalgia.  I sat for a minute at the steering wheel and concentrated on the tune until it came to me — Rock of Ages.  I continued to sit so I could listen and meditate on the words to the old hymn.

I felt like I was momentarily transported back to a simpler time — the old church building, the bells chiming an old familiar hymn, a sunny spring day —  I wanted to hold the moment for a while and savor it.

Unfortunately, with two-year-old and five-year-old sisters in the backseat, moments like that don’t last long.  Soon there was a loud squabble over a month-old McDonalds Happy Meal toy or something equally precious and valuable, and reality came crashing down around me.

Oh well.  I can still enjoy the beautiful, clear, sunny spring day.  And I plan to do just that.

  1. My mom is an open-the-box-in-the-store mom. I can’t ever seem to make myself do it but our store also has free sugar cookies at the front so they’re usually chomping on those.

  2. In catching up on some posts, you sound completely busy! Good for you to take the time to get those endorphines pumping and enjoying some church bell goodness! Have a great weekend!

  3. I love our church bells, and I would love to hear Rock of Ages. So you’re like me, I haven’t been to the Y in too long. I try to go Saturday mornings at least. So we should try to go together sometime and meet up! The best for me would be Wednesday or Friday mornings…

  4. Rock of Ages is one of my favorites. It always brings tears to my eyes.

Good for you for making it back to the gym. I only get there on the weekends and feel really guilty about that… Oh well!

  5. YUP!!! Me, too. Did that last night while grocery shopping…..those little shortbread cookies did the trick beautifully!!!!

  6. I love the church bells in our town. I too try to pick out the tunes. We do not play songs at our Episcopal church. But there is a bell, and I am dying dying dying to pull that rope and ring it.

  7. As far as I’m considered, if it is in my cart, it’s fair game. I’ve yet to open the milk or juice and refill a sippy cup, but only because I fear the mess. However, never say never, desperate times call for desperate measures and I wouldn’t put it past me.
