The Best Winter Running Tights

Winter running tights are always a hot commodity because they’re hard to find, and the good ones tend to sell out quickly and not get restocked. How do I know this? Because almost every year, I wait too late in the season to shop for a pair, and the selection is always picked over and I have a hard time finding my size.

Well, not this year! The second I saw the Rainier Reflective Tight on the Athleta website, I popped a pair into my cart. And guess what!?! They’re fully stocked from XXS to 3X, and they also come in petite and tall sizes.

These are seriously some of the best winter running tights I’ve tried, plus the camo print is right on trend, and I love the flattering seaming details. They’re specifically designed for high impact outdoor workouts in cold weather — nice and thick with a soft, brushed interior and a wind-resistant exterior.

Plus, they have reflective details for those pre-dawn runs and several zip pockets to stash your essentials. If you need any more convincing, read through the 23 five-star reviews.

If you’re in the market for a good pair of winter running tights for yourself or someone on your holiday shopping list, grab a pair of these right now because I don’t expect them to be fully stocked for long.

I love a chic all-black workout look, so I paired these black camo print leggings with a cozy black pullover, and I’m wearing my grey Momentum Tank underneath.

This tank is my favorite for gym workouts and summer running. It has a comfortable seamless design with good chest coverage and a silicone band along the bottom that keeps it from riding up during high impact workouts.

Athleta’s Cozy Karma Asym Pullover also makes a great Christmas gift for an active person on your shopping list… or a treat for yourself. It’s plush and soft and warm, and the high neck keeps out the wind and cold, while the asymmetrical zip makes it easy to get on and off. The crossover design and high-low hem are flattering and add interest.

Also check out the Cozy Karma 1/4 Zip Hoodie. It’s made with the same oh-so-cozy fabric, and it has a more traditional quarter zip neck and subtle high-low hemline.

These sweatshirts are perfect for outdoor workouts, layering over a tank on your way to and from the gym, or throwing on to hang out at home when you want to be comfortable and cozy. Both are available in a wide range of sizes; I’m wearing a small, for reference.

If you need some smaller active gift ideas for stocking stuffers or Secret Santa gifts, the Flurry Reflective Gloves are are lightweight and soft with reflective details, and they’re touchscreen compatible.

I also appreciate the clip to hold them together when not in use. I’ve wasted more time than I care to count, trying to find an errant glove before heading out for my morning run.

And this cute pom pom beanie would make a nice gift for the teens and college-aged girls on your list. It comes in two sizes, and a bunch of fun colors and classic neutrals.

From cozy must-haves to workout essentials, Athleta has tons of quality gifts for the women and girls on your shopping list this holiday season.

I rounded up some of my personal favorites in the shopping widget below, and be sure to check out their Gift Shop for even more holiday shopping inspiration!

  1. Nice looking tights! I don’t run, but I’ve bought from Athleta for many years. Their quality is always excellent. On a different subject, what jeans are you wearing the most often now that it’s getting cooler, Jo-Lynne? I bought several pairs of the newer styles and am finding myself struggling with the lengths and fullness when pairing them with sweaters and sweatshirts. I feel dumpy is the looser jeans. 🙁

    1. Colleen……ME TOO!!! I loved the wider, newer styles for Spring/Summer and warmer Fall days with sandals and mules but I too feel frumpy lately trying to pair them with booties and sweaters for some reason. I’ve find myself reaching for my skinnies. Boy, are they easier. No thinking with the shoe options. I also like them better with cardigan’s that are longer.

    2. I have this issue too and I wear my more form fitting tops and sweaters with non-skinny jeans. If it has to be front tucked to show my shape, then I don’t wear it unless I’m wearing skinny jeans. But my straight leg and flare jeans all fit me closely in the butt and thigh areas so it helps to avoid frumpitude. I think I just made up that word, lol.

  2. Athleta is my 25 yr old daughters favorite store. She’s in grad school so still dresses very casual and the quality is great. She’s going to Italy next month so I think I’ll get her the gloves and beanie for her trip. Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

  3. Even though I don’t need to purchase any active wear, I just had to see the pieces that you love. And I must say the running tights and top look great, and those gloves! I hope that David enjoyed his birthday dinner and yummy cake!

  4. Tried your parmesan tilapia recipe last night. It’s easy to put together and we really liked it – even my picky husband! This will go into our rotation for fish dishes. Thank you for sharing!

  5. Great finds….love them all. I love the pullover, but all sizes small enough are sold out. 🙁 You look so cute. Happy running.

  6. Hi Jo-Lynne
    I’m considering the Inlet vest.
Speaking of inlet, your pix with a
    water background are so intriguing.
    Where were those pix taken?
    Thanks!

  7. I seriously love Athleta gear anytime, but their winter stuff is especially good. I have the purple Rainier tights on my Christmas list. 🙂

  8. More of a power walker here than runner (especially during the upcoming brisk Winter season), but I absolutely agree about Athleta quality and: how actual zip pockets are soooo much better for carrying your phone and wallet (vs. the way other labels’ running tights often just put a pocket inside the back of the waistband). I’ve never liked olive camo (and would never wear it!), but camo in black is a def “yes” — which camouflages (my) problem areas I’m trying to walk off in a stylishly flattering way!
